Background: Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) following thoracic surgery affects 40%-60% of patients undergoing lung resection due to malignancies. Postoperative pain-related symptoms are common, leading to limitations in activities of daily living (ADL) and deterioration in physical function, which significantly impacts quality of life. Pain-related limitations are of interest, as postsurgical pain may present as a target for intervention to improve postoperative rehabilitation.

Article Synopsis
  • A study investigated the effects of adding a 12-week High-Intensity Interval Training (HIIT) program to a year-long lifestyle intervention for children with obesity in Denmark, focusing on health outcomes like BMI z-score and quality of life.
  • Results showed that while attendance in the HIIT program was decent and dropout rates were lower than the control group, HIIT did not significantly improve BMI z-scores compared to just the lifestyle intervention alone.
  • However, participants in the HIIT group reported improved health-related quality of life scores, especially in psychosocial aspects at the 3-month mark, but no significant differences were found for waist circumference or blood pressure changes.

Background And Purpose:  Patients with external fixators are at risk of pin-site infection. A tool for objective monitoring of pin sites for evolving signs of infection is warranted. We aimed to investigate the temperature (MaxTp) difference between clean and visually inflamed pin sites using thermography and to establish the optimal cut-off value of MaxTp using thermography as a screening tool for inflammation detection.

To evaluate tumour necrosis factor inhibitor (TNFi) drug-levels and presence of anti-drug antibodies (ADAb) in patients with inflammatory arthritis who taper TNFi compared to TNFi continuation. Patients with rheumatoid arthritis, psoriatic arthritis, or axial spondyloarthritis on stable TNFi dose and in low disease activity ≥ 12 months were randomised (2:1) to disease activity-guided tapering or control. Blood samples at baseline, 12- and 18-months were evaluated for TNFi drug-levels and ADAb.

Background: Persistent postsurgical pain (PPSP) after lung cancer surgery is common and current definitions are based on evaluations at a single time point after surgery. Pain intensity and symptoms may however fluctuate and change over time, and be impacted by multiple and shifting factors. Studies of postoperative recovery patterns and transition from acute to chronic pain are needed for further investigation of preventive measures and treatments to modify unfavourable recovery paths.

Findings regarding the relation between aortic size and risk factors are heterogeneous. This study aimed to generate new insights from a population-based adult cohort on aortic root dimensions and their association with age, anthropometric measures, and cardiac risk factors and evaluate the incidence of acute aortic events. Participants from the fifth examination round of the Copenhagen City Heart study (aged 20 to 98 years) with applicable echocardiograms and no history of aortic disease or valve surgery were included.

Objectives: To investigate cancer risk in rheumatoid arthritis (RA) patients treated with tocilizumab/sarilumab, abatacept, or rituximab compared with those who received tumour necrosis factor inhibitors (TNFi) and compared with biological disease-modifying anti-rheumatic drugs (bDMARD) naïve RA patients.

Methods: Nationwide registry-based cohort study of RA patients initiating treatment with tocilizumab/sarilumab, abatacept, rituximab, TNFi, and bDMARD-naive patients their second type of conventional synthetic DMARD (csDMARD). Patients were identified in DANBIO and followed for cancer from 2006-2020.

Background: Chronic pain is the hallmark symptom of joint diseases. This study examined the differences in quantitative sensory testing between patients with psoriatic arthritis (PsA), hand osteoarthritis (hand-OA) and a pain-free control group and differences between patients with and without concomitant fibromyalgia (cFM).

Methods: All patients and pain-free controls were assessed using pressure pain thresholds (PPT), temporal summation of pain (TSP), conditioned pain modulation (CPM) and clinical pain intensities.

Background: Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) is the most predominant vestibular disease. Previously, in the management of BPPV, both therapeutic and diagnostic benefits with mechanical rotation chairs (MRCs) have been reported. However, no previous studies have examined the efficacy of MRC treatment with a fairly new MRC.

Objective: Patients with indeterminate thyroid cytology often have a diagnostic hemithyroidectomy. The role of molecular imaging, particularly fluorine-18-fluorodeoxyglucose (F-FDG) positron emission tomography (PET), is controversial, and demographic variations in tumor prevalence and histology influence test performance and clinical utility. We retrospectively assessed the prevalence of indeterminate thyroid cytology and the malignancy rate in patients from an iodine deficient area, and evaluated the diagnostic value of preoperative thyroid scintigraphy and F-FDG PET/CT among operated patients.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to see if tapering biologic medications based on disease activity could lead to a significant decrease in medication dosage without worsening disease symptoms compared to usual care.
  • In a trial with patients who had stable low disease activity, those in the tapering group were more successful in reducing their biologic dosage (37% vs. 2%), although they experienced slightly more disease flares.
  • Overall, while tapering led to a successful dosage reduction for some, disease activity remained stable between both groups, and flares were manageable with additional treatment options.

The raw EEG signal is always contaminated with many different artifacts, such as muscle movements (electromyographic artifacts), eye blinking (electrooculographic artifacts) or power line disturbances. All artifacts must be removed for correct data interpretation. However, various noise reduction methods significantly influence the final shape of the EEG signal and thus its characteristic values, latency and amplitude.

Introduction: Rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is a chronic autoimmune inflammatory joint disease with multifactorial aetiology. Smoking is a well-established lifestyle risk factor, but diet may also have an impact on the risk of RA. Intake of the major marine n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids in particular eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) have been hypothesised to lower the risk of RA due to their anti-inflammatory effects, although based on limited knowledge.
