Dose-dependent and repeated-dose effects of methylprednisolone (MPL) on down-regulation of glucocorticoid receptor messenger RNA (GR mRNA) and GR density, as well as tyrosine aminotransferase (TAT) mRNA and TAT induction by receptor/gene-mediated mechanisms in rat liver were examined. A previously developed pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) model was used to design these studies which sought to challenge the model. Three groups of male adrenalectomized Wistar rats received MPL by i.

The effects of growth hormone (GH) treatment on renal sodium sulfate cotransport (NaSi-1) were studied in adult (9-10 months) and old (22-23 months) male Fischer 344 rats. All animals received twice-daily s.c.

Quantitative measurement of iNOS mRNA levels is important for the study of gene expression of this enzyme during the process of inflammation. We report here a method for quantitative measurement of iNOS mRNA levels with rtPCR directly from cells lysed with a single step phenol/chloroform/ether extraction.

The Las Vegas Valley PM10 Study was conducted during 1995 to determine the contributions to PM10 aerosol from fugitive dust, motor vehicle exhaust, residential wood combustion, and secondary aerosol sources. Twenty-four-hr PM10 samples were collected at two neighborhood-scale sites every sixth day for 13 months. Five week-long intensive studies were conducted over a middle-scale sub-region at 29 locations that contained many construction projects emitting fugitive dust.

Materials And Methods: Thirty-seven patients with complex cystic renal lesions were included in this retrospective study. The patients selected had undergone T1-weighted, T2-weighted, and gadolinium-enhanced MR imaging examinations using 1.
The baseline economic model for upper gastrointestinal (UGI) disease was developed in the context of patterns of care and resource use within the UK. It provided the opportunity to evaluate the extent to which an economic model developed in one country could be applied to meet the pharmacoeconomic information needs of decision makers in another. The choice of countries for analysis was restricted to countries within the International Gastro Primary Care Group (IGPCG) who had previously agreed on the appropriateness of the basic clinical algorithm to their domestic healthcare environment.

Corticosteroid immunosuppression is necessary in circumstances such as transplantation. Pharmacokinetic/pharmacodynamic (PK/PD) modeling was used to help elucidate the relationships between the events in the molecular cascade that result in muscle wasting and fat deposition by corticosteroids.

A 14-month study was undertaken to assess the long-term efficiencies of four dust suppressants (i.e., biocatalyst stabilizer, polymer emulsion, petroleum emulsion with polymer, and nonhazardous crude-oil-containing materials) to reduce the emission of PM from public unpaved roads.

The objective of this study was to examine the cellular mechanisms of adaptation of renal sodium/sulfate cotransport after varying dietary intakes of a sulfur containing amino acid, methionine. Female Lewis rats were divided into four groups and fed diets containing various concentrations of methionine (0, 0.

We describe the development of a versatile, novel system for creating RNase-resistant RNA. "Armored RNA" is a complex of MS2 bacteriophage coat protein and RNA produced in Escherichia coli by the induction of an expression plasmid that encodes the coat protein and an RNA standard sequence.

The objective of this study was to develop a quantitative assay for the NaSi-1 transporter protein. The NaSi-1 antigen was prepared by fusion protein techniques following analysis of the primary sequence for antigenicity.

Purpose: To investigate the feasibility and utility of performing centralized postimplant analysis for transperineal interstitial permanent prostate brachytherapy (TIPPB) by conducting a pilot study that compares the results obtained from 125I implants conducted at five different institutions.
Methods And Materials: Dose-volume histogram (DVH) analysis was performed on 10 postimplant CT scans from each of five institutions. This analysis included the total implanted activity of 125I, ultrasound, and CT volumes of the prostate, target-volume ratios, dose homogeneity quantifiers, prostate dose coverage indices, and rectal doses.
Persistent hyperinsulinemic hypoglycemia of infancy (PHHI) is characterized by severe hypoglycemia related to inappropriate insulin secretion. Morphologically, a tumoral and a nontumoral form are recognized. The tumoral form can be subdivided into adenomatous hyperplasia (in infants) and adenoma (in children).

Materials And Methods: CT and MR images of 41 consecutive patients, after transperineal interstitial permanent prostate brachytherapy, were evaluated by two physicians to determine interobserver and intermodality variability in prostate volume measurements. Repeat evaluation in five randomly selected patients was used to determine intraobserver variability.

This paper reports the first empirical estimate of particle emissions from unpaved shoulders along paved roads. Its objectives are to develop and demonstrate an emission rate measurement methodology that can be applied in different areas; identify the mechanisms that suspend dust from unpaved shoulders and the observables related to this suspension process; and quantify PM10 mass emissions in the form of an emission rate. To achieve these objectives, fast-response observations from nephelometers and a sonic anemometer were used to characterize short-lived dust plumes generated by passing vehicles.

Fuzzy sets naturally appear when describing the meaning of natural language words pertaining to quantitative scales, or when modelling the notion of typicality. The three main semantics for fuzzy sets are recalled: similarity, preference and uncertainty.

Methods: The value of quantities used in the calculation of dose from two institutions, Northwest Tumor Institute (NWTI) and Memorial Sloan-Kettering Cancer Center (MSKCC), which pioneered interstitial techniques for prostate brachytherapy were compared to those recently determined and published by TG 43 of the American Association of Physicists in Medicine (AAPM). Using two different weighting schemes, the change in the commonly prescribed reference dose of 160 Gy was determined and found to be in agreement with that recently suggested.
Background: Previous evaluation of the cost effectiveness of antireflux medication used in gastro-oesophageal reflux disease (GORD) have been based on results obtained in controlled clinical trials. Unfortunately such an approach does not necessarily identify the therapeutic option which provides the greatest benefit from available resources in real life situations. To make an informed choice requires a recognition that the costs and benefits of therapy in practice may differ from those identified in trials.

Objective: Outcome studies support the effectiveness of cognitive-behavioral approaches for treating depression among adults. The effectiveness of these approaches for adolescents, however, has received less empirical attention. This article critically reviews the literature on cognitive-behavioral therapy with depressed and dysphoric adolescents.
