Mode-division multiplexing is a common technology in photonic integrated circuits, which can combine various optical mode signals into one single channel such as a multimode waveguide to improve the communication system's capacity. Optical mode switch plays a critical role in mode-division multiplexing, which can switch the optical signal into different mode channels. Here, we propose and experimentally demonstrate a high-efficiency optical mode switch with a half-wave voltage length product () of about 1.

Lentil is an essential edible legume crop, especially for developing countries, due to the presence of high-quality proteins, fibers, essential vitamins, and mineral nutrients. The short height of this crop is often linked with a slow pace of growth, favoring the suitable space and time for weed incursion. Consequently, the developmental period during the crop growth cycle is shortened, leading to a decline in crop productivity.

Stochastic resetting has recently emerged as a proficient strategy to reduce the completion time for a broad class of first-passage processes. In the canonical setup, one intermittently resets a given system to its initial configuration only to start afresh and continue evolving in time until the target goal is met. This is, however, an instantaneous process and thus less feasible for any practical purposes.

We investigate the granular temperatures in force-free granular gases under exponential resetting. When a resetting event occurs, the granular temperature attains its initial value, whereas it decreases because of the inelastic collisions between the resetting events. We develop a theory and perform computer simulations for granular gas cooling in the presence of Poissonian resetting events.

Lithium niobate on insulator (LNOI) attracts extensive attention from academic and industrial communities due to LN's excellent electro-optic (EO) properties, which also brings bright prospects for achieving high-speed and large-capacity photonic integrated circuits (PICs) including active and passive components such as modulator, filter, and multiplexer. A mode converter can implement optical mode conversion from a fundamental mode to a high-order mode, which plays a key role in an on-chip mode-division multiplexing (MDM) system. In this Letter, we propose high-performance and scalable mode converters in LNOI, and based on our proposed scalable principle, the mode converter can be designed to implement the optical mode conversion from the fundamental mode to arbitrary high-order mode.

Sequence-based deep learning models have emerged as powerful tools for deciphering the cis-regulatory grammar of the human genome but cannot generalize to unobserved cellular contexts. Here, we present EpiBERT, a multi-modal transformer that learns generalizable representations of genomic sequence and cell type-specific chromatin accessibility through a masked accessibility-based pre-training objective. Following pre-training, EpiBERT can be fine-tuned for gene expression prediction, achieving accuracy comparable to the sequence-only Enformer model, while also being able to generalize to unobserved cell states.

Regulation of gene expression helps determine various phenotypes in most cellular life forms. It is orchestrated at different levels and at the point of transcription initiation by transcription factors (TFs). TFs bind to DNA through domains that are evolutionarily related, by shared membership of the same superfamilies (TF-SFs), to those found in other nucleic acid binding and protein-binding functions (nTFs for non-TFs).
