We present a theoretical study through MP2 ab initio molecular orbital calculations and B3LYP density functional theory with the 6-311++G(d,p) basis set of the heterocyclic hydrogen complexes, CnHmY-HX, where CnHmY = C2H4O, C2H5N and C2H4S, and X=F or Cl. This study aided in the elucidation the main changes in the structural, electronic and the vibrational properties in isolated species, due the hydrogen complexes formation, CnHmY-HX, revealing systematic tendencies in these chemical systems studied. The complexes has CS symmetry, with the HX subunit lying in the plane perpendicular to that of CYC nuclei of heterocyclic and acting as proton donor in forming a hydrogen bond to the heteroatom, Y.

Five isolates of a novel species of the yeast genus Malassezia were isolated from animals in Japan and Brazil. Phylogenetic trees based on the D1/D2 domains of the large-subunit (26S) rDNA sequences and nucleotide sequences of the internal transcribed spacer 1 region showed that the isolates were conspecific and belonged to the genus Malassezia. They were related closely to Malassezia dermatis and Malassezia sympodialis, but were clearly distinct from these two species and the other six species of Malassezia that have been reported, indicating that they should be classified as a novel species, Malassezia nana sp.

The expression and localization of syntaxin isoforms 1A and 1B in adrenergic and noradrenergic chromaffin cells were examined by both immunoblot analysis and confocal immunofluorescence microscopy. Syntaxin 1A was found in higher levels in noradrenergic cells, whereas syntaxin 1B was similarly expressed in most noradrenergic and adrenergic cells. However, some heterogeneity was observed within each catecholaminergic phenotype.

Swabs collected from the external ears of 942 cattle, including both European and zebu breeds, were used to evaluate the epidemiology of Malassezia species. High numbers of Malassezia isolates were significantly associated with maturity of the animals and with diagnosed otitis. In healthy animals, a particularly low prevalence of the genus was found in Holstein cows, especially in the summer months, a finding perhaps correlating with the open, air-exposed ears of this breed.

Parasite resistance can be defined as the ability of a parasite strain to survive and/or to multiply despite the administration and absorption of a drug given in doses equal or higher than those usually recommended, but within the limits of tolerance of the patients. Therefore, the ideal study design to be used to monitor emergence of parasite resistance would use historical controls or any valid baseline data. Moreover, it is desirable to have some control of remaining determinants of therapeutic failure, not related to biological parasite resistance, which could vary over time and would have potential to distort the analysis for detecting emergence of parasite resistance.

Yeast species in the genus Malassezia are lipophilic with the exception of Malassezia pachydermatis. During a study of the occurrence of Malassezia species in the external ear of 964 cattle and 6 dogs in Minas Gerais, Brazil, six lipid-dependent isolates could not be identified to known species. Four isolates came from healthy cows, one from a cow with otitis, and one from a healthy dog.

The ring-infected erythrocyte surface antigen (RESA), is one of the falciparum malaria vaccine candidates rarely studied in Brazil. Fieldwork logistics to conduct serology studies is simplified when eluates from whole blood dried on filter paper can be used. Therefore, this study aimed to assess the inter-test reliability for the anti-RESA ELISA-based indices using eluates from filter paper and from serum samples.

Infestations by rhabditiform nematodes and acarids of the genus Raillietia are considered the primary causes of external otitis in cattle in tropical regions. Recently, yeasts of the genus Malassezia have been associated with a relatively high percentage of otitis cases, but the occurrence of other yeasts and mycelial fungi has not yet been reported in the literature. This work studied the presence of fungi in the ear canal of 45 cattle with external parasitic otitis.

The occurrence of bovine external otitis in tropical regions is predominantly assigned to parasitic infections by rhabditiform nematodes and infestations by mites of the genus Raillietia. This research had the purpose of investigating the prevalence of parasitic otitis in the dry and rainy seasons of Minas Gerais and correlating it with variables age, breed and the presence of horns. The secretion or cerumen of 981 cattle was collected with sterile swabs, placed in test tubes and exposed to sunlight for the identification of clinical infections caused by rhabditiform nematodes.

We used botulinum neurotoxins (BoNT) to examine whether differences in the secretory activity of noradrenergic and adrenergic chromaffin cells are related to differences in the exocytotic machinery of these two types of bovine adrenal medulla cells. Cleavage of syntaxin and SNAP-25 by BoNT/C1 decreased in a dose-dependent way the release of both noradrenaline and adrenaline, but noradrenaline release was more sensitive to BoNT/C1. Cleavage of SNAP-25 by BoNT/A also had a larger inhibitory effect on noradrenaline release than on adrenaline release.

CCR-5 is a major cellular coreceptor for R5 strains of HIV-1. Individuals carrying a homozygous 32-base-pair deletion in this gene are apparently healthy and are relatively resistant to HIV-1 infection. Since CCR5 appears to be dispensable for the host, but important for initial HIV-1 infection, CCR5 mRNA is an excellent therapeutic target for inhibiting HIV-1 replication via ribozyme knockout.

To clarify the role of P-type Ca2+ channels in catecholamine release from adrenal chromaffin cells we examined the concentration dependence of the effect of omega-agatoxin IVA on the release both of adrenaline and noradrenaline induced by a K(+)-evoked depolarization. omega-Agatoxin IVA caused a biphasic dose-dependent inhibition of secretion with a high-potency component (IC50 < 1 nM), responsible for 10-15% of catecholamine release evoked by 70 mM K+, and a low-potency component that accounted for about 40% of release, with IC50 values of 57 nM and 48 nM for noradrenaline and adrenaline release, respectively. The release of catecholamines from chromaffin cells was also inhibited dose dependently by omega-conotoxin MVIIC with IC50 values of 182 and 218 nM for noradrenaline and adrenaline release, respectively.
