Characterization of HIV-1 genetic diversity and antiretroviral resistance in the state of Maranhão, Northeast Brazil.

The HIV-1 epidemic in Brazil has been growing in northeast and north regions, particularly an increase in AIDS cases among the younger male population has been observed. This study aims to characterize the HIV-1 genetic diversity and to evaluate its antiretroviral resistance profile among individuals presenting virological failure in the state of Maranhão-Brazil. HIV-1 pol gene sequences from 633 patients on antiretroviral therapy were obtained from the Department of Surveillance, Prevention and Control of Sexually Transmitted Infections, HIV/AIDS and Viral Hepatitis of the Brazilian Ministry of Health.

Using satellite data to study the relationship between rainfall and diarrheal diseases in a Southwestern Amazon basin.

The North region is the second region in Brazil with the highest incidence rate of diarrheal diseases in children under 5 years old. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between rainfall and water level during the rainy season principally with the incidence rate of this disease in a southwestern Amazon basin. Rainfall estimates and the water level were correlated and both of them were correlated with the diarrheal incidence rate.

Predictive value of intraoperative neurophysiologic monitoring in assessing long-term facial function in grade IV vestibular schwannoma removal.

Background: Despite routine use of intraoperative neuromonitoring in acoustic neuroma removal, its application in predicting long-term facial function is limited.

Methods: Prospective recording of facial nerve function and subsequent review of intraoperative neurophysiologic data. Stimulation of the facial nerve was performed proximal and distal to the tumor locus after tumor removal with measurement of amplitude and latency responses in the orbicularis oculi and oris muscles.

S100A1: a major player in cardiovascular performance.

Calcium cycling is a major determinant of cardiac function. S100A1 is the most abundant member of the calcium-binding S100 protein family in myocardial tissue. S100A1 interacts with a variety of calcium regulatory proteins such as SERCA2a, ryanodine receptors, L-type calcium channels and Na(+)/Ca(2+) exchangers, thus enhancing calcium cycling.
