Background: Patients with cleft lip and palate (CLP) often exhibit unique anatomical variations in the pterygoid plates, which can influence fracture patterns at the pterygomaxillary junction (PMJ) during Le Fort I osteotomy. These differences may increase the risk of unfavorable fractures, complicating surgery and recovery.

Purpose: The study purpose was to measure the association between the osteotomy level with the PMJ fracture patterns in CLP patients undergoing Le Fort I osteotomy.

The absence of standardized reporting for sleep medicine exams across different laboratories can lead to misinterpretation, diagnostic inconsistencies, and suboptimal treatment strategies. This document seeks to establish guidelines for the development of sleep study reports, covering recordings from studies of types 1 to 4, and represents the official position of Associação Brasileira do Sono (ABS; Brazilian Sleep Association) on the standardization of polysomnography (PSG) and cardiorespiratory polygraphies.  The recommendations for the items to be reported in PSG records were developed by means of a Delphi study, comprised of two voting rounds.

Background: T-cell acute lymphoblastic leukemia (T-ALL) remains understudied compared to B-cell ALL, especially in Latin America. Different biology and response to chemotherapy have been described.

Methods: This retrospective multi-site cohort study analyzed data from 152 newly diagnosed T-ALL patients aged 15 years and above, between January 2010 and June 2022.

This study aims to report a rare complication, anisocoria (mydriasis), in a patient with cleft lip and palate in the immediate postoperative period after orthognathic surgery and discuss the literature surrounding this event. Mydriasis after orthognathic surgery may be related to the separation of the pterygoid plate from the sphenoid bone, which can injure the cranial nerves. Therefore, knowledge of possible anatomical variations of the posterior region of the maxilla becomes extremely important to minimize complications in cleft patients.

Genetic redundancy in bacteria plays a crucial role in enhancing adaptability and accelerating evolution in response to selective pressures, particularly those associated with rapid environmental changes. Aminopenicillins like ampicillin are important therapeutic options for Enterococcus infections in both humans and animals, with resistance mostly associated with pbp5 gene mutations or overexpression. While the occurrence of redundant pbp5 genes has been occasionally reported, the advantages for the host bacteria have not been explored in detail.

Over the years, humanity has faced various global crises of different kinds that have caused great suffering in the community, such as wars, slavery, torture or the Holocaust, but also climate change, economic crises, or sanitary disasters. The recent pandemic posed a barrier to palliative and End-of-Life (EoL) care, as the need for physical distance made it difficult to retain essential human interactions while minimizing the risk of viral transmission. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the robustness of supportive networks (i.

The presence of anthropogenic compounds, including organochlorine pesticides (OCPs) and polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs), was studied in three salt marshes within the Tagus estuary, Portugal, along an anthropogenic pressure gradient. Results revealed differences in OCPs and PCBs among the marshes, with differing concentration levels. Specifically, one marsh, with surrounding agricultural activity, showed the highest OCP concentrations, while another, with a historical industrial past, exhibited elevated PCB levels.

Purpose: To assess the behavior change of high-risk breast cancer patients regarding the intention to undergo risk-reducing mastectomies (RRM) before and after genetic testing results and to identify the main influencing factors in decision-making.

Methods: Prospective cohort study conducted between November 2021 and October 2022 with women under follow-up at the high-risk outpatient clinic of the State University of Campinas (UNICAMP). Patients were referred for genetic testing, followed by counseling according to the test result.

We study optimal designs for clinical trials when the value of the response and its variance depend on treatment and covariates are included in the response model. Such designs are generalizations of Neyman allocation, commonly used in personalized medicine when external factors may have differing effects on the response depending on subgroups of patients. We develop theoretical results for D-, A-, E- and D-optimal designs and construct semidefinite programming (SDP) formulations that support their numerical computation.

Article Synopsis
  • Several clinical trials confirm that dupilumab is effective and safe for treating atopic dermatitis (AD), but there’s limited information on its long-term real-world outcomes.
  • A retrospective study of 312 adult patients in Portugal found a 30-month drug survival rate of 82%, with 12.5% discontinuing treatment mainly due to treatment failure or adverse effects.
  • Significant improvements were observed in skin severity (EASI score), itchiness (NRS), and quality of life (DLQI), showcasing the drug's effectiveness over the follow-up period.

Article Synopsis
  • The combination of all-trans retinoic acid and anthracyclines has greatly improved acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL) treatment outcomes, particularly in areas without access to arsenic trioxide.
  • Despite these advances, low- and middle-income countries (LMIC) still struggle with high mortality rates during treatment due to inadequate management of complications.
  • A study involving 806 APL patients across several South American countries showed a reduction in induction mortality to 14.6% and an 81% overall survival rate over four years, demonstrating the benefits of international clinical collaboration.

Background: A cardio-oncology rehabilitation model among cancer survivors showed superior results comparing to a community-based exercise intervention. However, questions remain about its cost-effectiveness.

Aims: To assess the cost-effectiveness of a center-based cardiac rehabilitation (CBCR) program when compared to usual care encompassing a community-based exercise training (CBET), among cancer survivors with high cardiovascular risk.

Study Objectives: We assessed whether critical pathophysiological phenotypes predict treatment response in patients with obstructive sleep apnea using a mandibular advancement device (MAD).

Methods: Thirty-one patients with obstructive sleep apnea were treated with a MAD. Individuals were categorized and graded into 4 pathophysiological phenotypes based on polysomnographic features (anatomical, ventilatory control, arousal threshold, and muscle responsiveness).

To verify if maxillomandibular retrusion, obesity, and increased neck circumference are factors of worse surgical prognosis for lateral pharyngoplasty in apneic patients.  We evaluated 53 patients with obstructive sleep apnea who underwent lateral pharyngoplasty. Clinical evaluation was performed before the surgical procedure and included the measurement of body mass index (BMI) in kg/m , neck circumference in centimeters, and a clinical evaluation of the facial profile obtained through the natural position of the oriented head.
