Impact of Iron Deficiency on Response to and Remodeling After Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

Iron deficiency is prevalent in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and relates to symptomatic status, readmission, and all-cause mortality. The relation between iron status and response to cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) remains insufficiently elucidated. This study assesses the impact of iron deficiency on clinical response and reverse cardiac remodeling and outcome after CRT.

Mode of Death in Octogenarians Treated With Cardiac Resynchronization Therapy.

Background: Cardiac resynchronization therapy (CRT) improves morbidity and mortality in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and electrical dyssynchrony. CRT patients in clinical practice are older compared with clinical trials.

Objective: To investigate clinical response, reverse remodeling, outcome, and mode of death in octogenarians receiving CRT.

HMG-CoA synthase isoenzymes 1 and 2 localize to satellite glial cells in dorsal root ganglia and are differentially regulated by peripheral nerve injury.

In dorsal root ganglia (DRG), satellite glial cells (SGCs) tightly ensheathe the somata of primary sensory neurons to form functional sensory units. SGCs are identified by their flattened and irregular morphology and expression of a variety of specific marker proteins. In this report, we present evidence that the 3-hydroxy-3-methylglutaryl coenzyme A synthase isoenzymes 1 and 2 (HMGCS1 and HMGCS2) are abundantly expressed in SGCs.

Plasma Volume Is Normal but Heterogeneously Distributed, and True Anemia Is Highly Prevalent in Patients With Stable Heart Failure.

Background: Intravascular volume overload and depletion as well as anemia are associated with increased hospital admissions and mortality in patients with heart failure. This study aimed to accurately measure plasma volume and red cell mass (RCM) in stable patients with chronic heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF) and gain more insight into plasma volume regulation and anemia in stable conditions of HFrEF.

Methods And Results: Plasma volume and RCM measurement based on Tc-labeled red blood cells, venous blood sample,s and clinical parameters were obtained in 24 stable HFrEF patients under optimal medical therapy.

Is venous congestion associated with reduced cerebral oxygenation and worse neurological outcome after cardiac arrest?

Background: Post-cardiac arrest (CA) patients are at risk of secondary ischemic damage in the case of suboptimal brain oxygenation during an ICU stay. We hypothesized that elevated central venous pressures (CVP) would impair cerebral perfusion and oxygenation (venous cerebral congestion). The aim of the present study was to investigate the relationship between CVP, cerebral tissue oxygen saturation (SctO2) as assessed with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) and outcome in post-CA patients.

CT and MRI Aspects of an Abdominal Hemophilic Pseudotumor.

We report the computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) aspects of a rare case of a patient with a large abdominal hemophilic pseudotumor, a chronic, encapsulated, slowly expanding hematoma occurring in severe hemophilia, without involvement of iliopsoas muscles and iliac bones.

Effect of a long chain n-3 PUFA-enriched diet on production and reproduction variables in Holstein dairy cows.

The objective of this study was to determine the effect of a rumen-protected fish oil supplement on the production and reproduction variables in postpartum dairy cows. Holstein cows (n=46) were given a basal total mixed diet plus one PUFA supplement: n-3 (n-3; protected fish oil; 1% dry matter intake (DMI); n=23) or control (n-6; toasted soybeans; 1.8% DMI; n=23), in a switchback design over two consecutive lactations.

Heart rate reduction and exercise performance in recent onset heart failure with reduced ejection fraction: arguments for beta-blocker hypo-response.

Objective: Beta blockers reduce all-cause mortality and readmissions in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction (HFrEF), which may be explained by their effect on heart rate (HR). This study assessed the impact of HR reduction with beta blockers on exercise capacity in recent onset HFrEF.

Methods And Results: Fifty consecutive patients with recent onset HFrEF (<30 days) performed a standardized exercise protocol with respiratory gas analysis at baseline as well as after 6 and 12 months.

Determinants and impact of the natriuretic response to diuretic therapy in heart failure with reduced ejection fraction and volume overload.

Objective: The objective of this study was to investigate determinants of the natriuretic response to diuretics in decompensated heart failure (HF) and the relationship with decongestion, neurohumoral activation and clinical outcome in the contemporary era of HF management.

Methods And Results: In this prospective, single-centre cohort study, consecutive patients with decompensated HF (n = 54) and left ventricular ejection fraction 45% received protocol-driven diuretic therapy until complete disappearance of congestion signs. Urine was collected during three consecutive 24-h intervals.

Response and tolerance to oral vasodilator up-titration after intravenous vasodilator therapy in advanced decompensated heart failure.

Aims: The aim of this study was to assess the haemodynamic response and tolerance to aggressive oral hydralazine/isosorbide dinitrate (HYD/ISDN) up-titration after intravenous vasodilator therapy in advanced decompensated heart failure (ADHF).

Methods And Results: Medical records of 147 consecutive ADHF patients who underwent placement of a pulmonary artery catheter and received intravenous vasodilator therapy were reviewed. Intravenous sodium nitroprusside and sodium nitroglycerin as first-line agent for those with preserved blood pressures were utilized in 143 and 32 patients, respectively.

K-edge imaging with the XPAD3 hybrid pixel detector, direct comparison of CdTe and Si sensors.

We investigate the improvement from the use of high-Z CdTe sensors for pre-clinical K-edge imaging with the hybrid pixel detectors XPAD3. We compare XPAD3 chips bump bonded to Si or CdTe sensors in identical experimental conditions. Image performance for narrow energy bin acquisitions and contrast-to-noise ratios of K-edge images are presented and compared.

A disproportionate elevation in right ventricular filling pressure, in relation to left ventricular filling pressure, is associated with renal impairment and increased mortality in advanced decompensated heart failure.

Background: Discordance between left- and right-sided filling pressures occurs in a subset of patients presenting with acute decompensated heart failure (ADHF). We hypothesized that a disproportionately increased right atrial pressure (RAP) relative to the pulmonary capillary wedge pressure (PCWP) would be associated with both renal dysfunction and mortality in ADHF.

Methods: A total of 367 patients admitted with ADHF with elevated intracardiac filling pressures were treated with intensive medical therapy guided by invasive hemodynamic monitoring.

A novel oral inhibitor of BRD2/3/4, the thienotriazolodiazepine compound OTX015, suitable for human use, is available. Here we report its biological effects in AML and ALL cell lines and leukemic samples.

Drug-associated cues have profound effects on an addict's emotional state and drug-seeking behavior. Although this influence must involve the motivational neural system that initiates and encodes the drug-seeking act, surprisingly little is known about the nature of such physiological events and their motivational consequences. Three experiments investigated the effect of a cocaine-predictive stimulus on dopamine signaling, neuronal activity, and reinstatement of cocaine seeking.

[A childhood and adolescence cancer survivors' association: Les Aguerris].

In France, we can estimate that 50,000 adults are childhood or adolescence cancer survivors. Not all of them will experience late effects but they should be informed about their previous disease and should get a detailed summary of treatment information including a personal plan for late effects screening. They also should have access to appropriate follow-up care including detection and treatment of late effects and provision of support and advice.

Prognostic role of cardiac power index in ambulatory patients with advanced heart failure.

Background: Cardiac pump function is often quantified by left ventricular ejection fraction by various imaging modalities. As the heart is commonly conceptualized as a hydraulic pump, cardiac power describes the hydraulic function of the heart. We aim to describe the prognostic value of resting cardiac power index (CPI) in ambulatory patients with advanced heart failure.

[Distributions of Mental Disorders and Psychosocial Pressures in Children and Adolescence of a Psychiatric Health Care Population].

Objectives: Distributions in children's or adolescents' mental disorders or in psychosocial pressures were demonstrated.

Methods: The health care population in child- and adolescent psychiatric institutions of Bremen in 2005 - 2012 (N = 7190) was analyzed.

Results: Amongst other burden factors pressures in school context or abnormal social environments increased significantly.
