However, the frequency of primary liver carcinoma (PLC) with biliary differentiation, such as cholangiocarcinoma (CC) and combined hepatocholangiocarcinoma (CHCC), in GH remains unclear We analyzed the histologic type of 20 PLCs occurring in the background of GH; all patients were homozygotic for the C282Y mutation. Purpose: The purpose of the study was to develop a short and a screening version of the Zarit Burden Interview (ZBI) that would be suitable across diagnostic groups of cognitively impaired older adults, and that could be used for cross-sectional, longitudinal, and intervention studies.

Human interleukin-2 (IL-2) interacts with two types of functional receptors (IL-2R alpha betagamma and IL-2R betagamma) and acts on a broad range of target cells involved in inflammatory reactions and immune responses. IL-2 is also used in different clinical trials aimed at improving the treatment of some cancers and the recovery of CD4 lymphocytes by HIV patients. The therapeutic index of IL-2 is limited by various side effects dominated by the vascular leak syndrome.

The effect of temperature (23 or 33 degrees C) and feeding level on components of energy balance was studied in seven groups of individually reared Piétrain x (Landrace x Large White) littermate piglets. Within each litter, one pig was reared at 23 degrees C and given a predefined feeding level close to ad libitum (23AL pigs), one was reared at 33 degrees C and also fed close to ad libitum (33AL), and one was reared at 23 degrees C and pair-fed to the 33AL pig (23PF). Piglets of one litter were acclimated during 2 to 4 wk to their experimental temperature in temperature-controlled rooms before being transferred (one per week) to a respiration chamber for measurement of nitrogen and energy balances.

To assess the acclimation of pigs to heat stress, the effects of high (33 degrees C) or thermoneutral (23 degrees C) constant temperatures on feeding behaviour and components of energy balance were studied in group-housed young pigs. The effects of ambient temperature (T; 12-29 degrees C), body weight (BW; 30-90 kg) and metabolisable energy intake (ME) on components of energy balance were studied in seven groups of Piétrain x Large White barrows kept in a respiratory chamber. In Expt 1 (groups 1, 2 and 3), T varied in a cyclic way from 22 degrees C to 12 degrees C and then from 12 degrees C to 22 degrees C with three or four consecutive days at each of 22, 19, 16, 14 and 12 degrees C. A transgenic (Tg) mouse expressing human IL-15 was generated to define the role of IL-15 in the normal immune response. Overexpression of IL-15 resulted in an increase of NK, CD44(hi)CD8 memory T cells, and gammadelta T cells. Methods And Results: Chromosomal in-situ hybridization was performed on deparaffinized tissue sections from 20 Barrett's adenocarcinomas, 20 adenocarcinomas of the cardia and 20 adenocarcinomas of the antrum, with centromeric alpha satellite DNA probes specific for chromosomes 7, 8, 11, 17 and Y, labelled with digoxigenin. Hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) occurring in nonfibrotic liver represents a rare, ill-defined subgroup of HCC without cirrhosis in which mechanisms of hepatocarcinogenesis remain unclear. The aim of our study was to assess epidemiological factors and detailed histopathologic changes in the nontumoral liver of patients developing such tumors. Of 330 HCCs resected in our institution between 1985 and 1998, we retrospectively analyzed 80 cases (53 men, 27 women; mean age, 51 +/- 16 years) in which the nontumoral liver showed no (n = 28) or minimal (n = 52) portal fibrosis without any septal fibrosis.

Radio-iodinated cytokines and monoclonal antibodies directed at the IL-2R beta- and gamma-chains were used to analyze the structure of the cell-surface IL-15 and IL-2 receptors expressed by the human lymphoma cell clone YT-2C2. YT-2C2 cells are IL-2R alpha negative and express IL-2R gamma (15,000 molecules/cell) in excess of IL-2R beta (11,000 molecules/cell). Accordingly, they display a number of beta/gamma complexes of intermediate affinity for IL-2 and IL-15 which is equivalent to the number of beta-chains.

Disruption of the atrial natriuretic peptide (ANP) receptor [guanylyl cyclase-A (GC-A)] gene yields mice with a salt-resistant form of hypertension, raising fundamental questions on the role of ANP in acute regulation of the kidney. Here, we show that water intake, food consumption, stool weight, urine volume, and sodium excretion are not significantly different between wild-type and GC-A null mice on standard rodent chow (0.7% NaCl) or a high-salt diet (8% NaCl).

Interleukin (IL)-2 interacts with two types of functional receptors (IL-2Ralphabetagamma and IL-2Rbetagamma) and acts on a broad range of target cells involved in inflammatory reactions and immune responses. For the first time, we show that a chemically synthesized fragment of the IL-2 sequence can fold into a molecule mimicking the quaternary structure of a hemopoietin. Indeed, peptide p1-30 (containing amino acids 1-30, covering the entire alpha helix A of IL-2) spontaneously folds into an alpha-helical homotetramer and stimulates the growth of T cell lines expressing human IL-2Rbeta, whereas shorter versions of the peptide lack helical structure and are inactive.

We report the existence of eight different interleukin-15 receptor alpha-chain (IL-15Ralpha) transcripts resulting from exon-splicing mechanisms within the IL-15Ralpha gene. Two main classes of transcripts can be distinguished that do or do not (Delta2 isoforms) contain the exon 2-coding sequence. Both classes were expressed in numerous cell lines and tissues (including peripheral blood lymphocytes) at comparable levels and could be transcribed in COS-7 cells, and the proteins were expressed at the cell surface.

Positron emission tomography (PET) was used to investigate the functional anatomy of the foveal fixation system in 10 subjects scanned under three different conditions: at rest (REST), during the fixation of a central point (FIX), and while fixating the same foveal target during the presentation of peripheral visual distractors (DIS). Compared with the REST condition, both FIX and DIS tasks activated a common set of cortical areas. First, in addition to the involvement of the occipital visual cortex, both the frontal eye field (FEF) and the intraparietal sulcus (IPS) were bilaterally activated.

In recent years, the enzymes which are involved in the formation of DHT in steroid target tissues have been well investigated, however, enzymes responsible for the catabolism and elimination of steroids in these tissues, in particular the uridine diphospho-glucuronosyltransferase (UGT) family of enzymes, have received much less attention. We have recently demonstrated that human and monkey are unique in having high plasma levels of C19 steroid glucuronides. These circulating conjugates have been proposed to reflect the peripheral conversion of adrenal and gonadal C19 steroids to potent androgens, especially DHT.
