Prior researchers have explored preferences and the effectiveness of salty and sweet foods compared to fruits and vegetables, but the criteria for demonstrating effectiveness have often been arbitrary rather than academic. The purpose of this study was to determine the stiffness of mandibular soft tissues during mandibular distraction, from the perspective of improving distraction devices such as automated continuous distractors. Uncompleted osteotomy was performed on 11 fresh human hemimandibles via a greenstick fracture, to preserve the uplift of the internal periosteum of the mandibular corpus. Acute chest syndrome (ACS) is a frequent complication of sickle cell disease (SCD). Because coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) increases mortality and morbidity in many diseases, we retrospectively analyzed the impact of SARS-CoV-2 infection on the incidence, the clinical presentation, and the prognosis of ACS in patients with SCD by comparing ACS episode before and during COVID-19 pandemic. Ninety-nine episodes of ACS were registered over 24 months before pandemic versus 81 episodes over 24 months during the pandemic period.

Noncaloric sweeteners have enabled a reduction of carbohydrate sweeteners in the diet for many years, thus combating obesity, diabetes, and other health disorders. However, many consumers reject noncaloric sweeteners, as they exhibit delays in sweetness onset, objectionable lingering sweet aftertaste, and the absence of sugar-like mouthfeel. We propose that the temporal taste differences between carbohydrate and noncaloric sweeteners result from slowed diffusion of the latter to and from sweetener receptors through the amphipathic mucous hydrogel covering the tongue.

We report here the generation of the human iPSC line INMi005-A from a patient with non-syndromic autosomal recessive retinitis pigmentosa caused by compound heterozygous mutations in the USH2A gene. The reprogramming of primary human dermal fibroblasts was performed using the non-integrative Sendai virus method and the OSKM transcription factor cocktail. The generated INMi005-A iPSC line is pluripotent and genetically stable, and will represent a valuable tool for understanding the pathophysiology associated with USH2A mutations.

Objectives: To evaluate the performance of the nnU-Net open-source deep learning framework for automatic multi-task segmentation of craniomaxillofacial (CMF) structures in CT scans obtained for computer-assisted orthognathic surgery.

Methods: Four hundred and fifty-three consecutive patients having undergone high-resolution CT scans before orthognathic surgery were randomly distributed among a training/validation cohort (n = 300) and a testing cohort (n = 153). The ground truth segmentations were generated by 2 operators following an industry-certified procedure for use in computer-assisted surgical planning and personalized implant manufacturing.
