Prefusion and postfusion states of the biological fusion process between lipid bilayer vesicle membranes are studied in this paper. Based on the Helfrich-type continuum theory, a diffuse interface model is developed which describes the phase changes on the deformable vesicles via a scalar phase field function, and incorporates the adhesion effect between the different phases of the vesicles through a nonlocal interaction potential. Adhesion of multicomponent vesicle membranes.

In this work, we study the adhesion of multicomponent vesicle membrane to both flat and curved substrates, based on the conventional Helfrich bending energy for multicomponent vesicles and adhesion potentials of different forms. A phase field formulation is used to describe the different components of the vesicle. For the axisymmetric case, a number of representative equilibrium vesicle shapes are computed and a few energy diagrams are presented which reveal the dependence of the calculated shapes and solution branches on various parameters including both bending moduli and spontaneous curvatures as well as the adhesion potential constants.

Our research focused on the polymorphonuclear neutrophils (PMNs) tethering to the vascular endothelial cells (EC) and the subsequent melanoma cell emboli formation in a shear flow, an important process of tumor cell extravasation from the circulation during metastasis. We applied population balance model based on Smoluchowski coagulation equation to study the heterotypic aggregation between PMNs and melanoma cells in the near-wall region of an in vitro parallel-plate flow chamber, which simulates in vivo cell-substrate adhesion from the vasculatures by combining mathematical modeling and numerical simulations with experimental observations. To the best of our knowledge, a multiscale near-wall aggregation model was developed, for the first time, which incorporated the effects of both cell deformation and general ratios of heterotypic cells on the cell aggregation process.

We have demonstrated single-shot continuously time-resolved MeV ultrafast electron diffraction using a static single crystal gold sample. An MeV high density electron pulse was used to probe the sample and then streaked by an rf deflecting cavity. The single-shot, high quality, streaked diffraction pattern allowed structural information within several picoseconds to be continuously temporally resolved with an approximately 200 fs resolution.

We previously found that in addition to anti-proliferation function, extracellular ATP had a pro-invasion effect on prostate cancer cells, and probably serves as an important regulator of invasion in local microenvironment. Many flavonoids were demonstrated to possess the antiallergic effect. Here we detected whether apigenin, a flavonoid, can attenuate allergen-induced airway inflammation and what is the possible mechanism in a murine model of asthma. Apigenin decreased the degree of the inflammatory cell infiltration, airway hyperresponsiveness, and total immunoglobulin E levels compared with the ovalbumin group.

Cross-regulation between the Wnt and nuclear factor (NF)-κB signaling pathways has emerged as an important area for the regulation of a diverse array of genes and pathways active in chronic inflammation, immunity, development, and tumorigenesis. The ligands, kinases, transcription factors, and products of their target gene expression are involved in cross-regulation of these two signaling pathways. Both β-catenin and NF-κB activate inducible nitric oxide synthase (iNOS) gene expression; however, β-catenin also exerts an inhibitory effect on NF-κB-mediated transcriptional activation, including iNOS.

The simulation optimization and an experimental demonstration of improved performances of mega-electron-volt ultrafast electron diffraction (MeV UED) are reported in this paper. Using ultrashort high quality electron pulses from an S-band photocathode rf gun and a polycrystalline aluminum foil as the sample, we experimentally demonstrated an improved spatial resolution of MeV UED, in which the Debye-Scherrer rings of the (111) and (200) planes were clearly resolved. This result showed that MeV UED is capable to achieve an atomic level spatial resolution and a approximately 100 fs temporal resolution simultaneously, and will be a unique tool for ultrafast structural dynamics studies.
