Spectroscopic properties of Tb-doped and Tb-Ag codoped lithium tetraborate (LTB) glasses with LiBO (or LiO-2BO) composition are investigated and analysed using electron paramagnetic resonance (EPR), optical absorption, photoluminescence (PL) and photoluminescence excitation (PLE) spectra, PL decay kinetics and absolute quantum yield (QY) measurements. PL spectra of the investigated glasses show numerous narrow emission bands corresponding to the D → F (J = 6-0) and D → F (J = 5-3) transitions of Tb (4f) ions. The most intense PL band of Tb ions at 541 nm (D → F transition) is characterised by a lifetime slightly exceeding 2.

The local structure and spectroscopic properties of Cu-Sm co-doped LiBO glass have been studied using XRD, EPR, UV-Vis-NIR absorption and luminescence methods and compared with the corresponding results for Sm-doped and Cu-doped LiBO glasses. The EPR spectrum reveals an axially-symmetric signal with a characteristic hyperfine structure belonging to Cu ions. The Cu/Cu ratio was determined.

Aim Of The Study: Deaths due to inappropriate functioning of the emergency medical services system, as recently described by Polish mass media, has drawn the attention of society to the activities of medical dispatchers. Legal regulations impose obligations on those persons associated with receiving phone calls and dispensing appropriate emergency medical teams. In this paper an analysis of chosen medicolegal opinions from the practice of the Department of Forensic Medicine and Forensic Toxicology, Medical University of Silesia in Katowice, towards malpractices committed by dispatchers of EMS, was performed.

The number of pecuniary cases involving patient claims due to nosocomial infections has been increasing for many years, and with it, the amount of adjudged compensations has also been increasing. In this situation, it is important for defendant healthcare facilities to implement a proper policy, both before the trial and during the court proceedings. Unfortunately, as a rule, defendant facilities commit a variety of errors, such as: wrong strategy, inability to cooperate on the part of those involved in the matter and improper preparation and usage of evidence.

Unlabelled: In the study we tested drug sensitivity to 3 carbapenems (doripenem, imipenem and meropenem) of Gram-negative clinical isolates from Southern Poland.

Material And Methods: 89 strains were examined: 42 from Pseudomonas genus, 16 Acinetobacter baumannii strains and 31 Enterobacteriaceae strains. Etests were used according to the producers instructions, MIC values were interpreted using EUCAST criteria.

Background: ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) in patients above 80 years of age continues to be a therapeutic challenge. Patients in this age group are rarely included in randomised clinical trials.

Aim: Comparison of the effectiveness and safety of STEMI management in octogenarians in hospitals with a 24-hour percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI) capability and hospitals without PCI access.

The present study reports the epidemiological investigations undertaken in one of Krakow's city hospitals regarding the source of infection and the routes of transmission of a group A streptococcus (Streptococcus pyogenes), using fluorescent in situ hybridization as a rapid method for detecting S. pyogenes carriage in the medical personnel involved. Four patients from the gynaecology department and two patients from the surgery department presented with clinical signs of infection.

The most popular method of GBS identification in Poland currently is by culturing on enriched agar and verifying the Lancefield Group using special latex agglutination kits. However, the classical methods are time-consuming and their sensitivity is insufficient therefore it is becoming more common to try and apply molecular methods which are characterized by high sensitivity and rapid results. Moreover, molecular methods give us the possibility to carry out epidemiological investigations and gene detection, for instance for antibiotic resistance.

Streptococcus agalactiae, group B streptococci (GBS) are a constituent of normal vaginal bacterial microflora which often do not give any clinical symptoms. On the other hand, during pregnancy there are optimal conditions for GBS multiplication in the vagina, which may have very serious consequences for both the mother and her child. The women (n = 563) that participated in our study were in their 3rd trimester and they were divided into groups: normal pregnancy or high risk pregnancy.

To develop an appearance scale that will allow the objective and scientific comparison of the cosmetic results of healed lacerations, 33 photographs of healed lacerations and incisions with variable cosmetic results were shown to four plastic surgeons. These plastic surgeons were asked to independently rate the photographs on two separate occasions using two scales, a Visual Analogue Scale and a Categorical Scale. Interobserver and intraobserver agreement were determined for each scale.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the influence of hormonal milieu on endochondral growth. This was achieved by transplanting hind limbs of juvenile rats to syngeneic adult rats. Because there is no potential for rejection, the limb can be transplanted between animals of different ages, to study the influence of hormonal maturity on stimulation and cessation of physeal growth and maturation.

To study wound repair in rat Achilles tendon, we utilized a novel surgical method for immobilizing only one hind limb. In this technique, the femoral vessels were preserved while the skin, muscles, nerves and the shaft for the femur were transected. The limb was then rotated and sutured to lie on the posterolateral flank of the animal.
