Pilot Study of the Effects of Paced Breathing on Measures of Convergent and Divergent Thinking.

Background: The ability of the autonomic nervous system's stress response to impair aspects of cognitive flexibility is known. However, the ability to modulate the sympathetic response and improve these cognitive impairments via nonpharmacological intervention, such as paced breathing (PB), requires further investigation.

Objective: To better elucidate the effects of PB on cognition.

A Case Report for a Complex Denture Case on a Special Care Patient with Osteogenesis Imperfecta.

This case report presents a patient with Dentogenesis Imperfecta (DI) associated with Osteogenesis Imperfecta (OI) and its subsequent dental manifestations. The patient in this report (see Figure 1) has spent his life living with his disability type III OI (also known as brittle bone disease) and its degenerative affects. The patient is independent and enjoys his social life but felt his existing dentures were having an adverse effect on the quality of his life.

The Use of Intranasal Midazolam in a Special Care Dentistry Department: Technique and Cases.

Intranasal (IN) administered midazolam has allowed patients who require conscious sedation but struggle to tolerate cannulation another option by which they can receive dental treatment. Studies have demonstrated that a mean bioavailability (F) of more than 73% can be achieved with IN-administered midazolam. This is due to the high vascularity within the nose.

Partnerships for development: municipal solid waste management in Kasese, Uganda.

Municipal solid waste management systems of many developing countries are commonly constrained by factors such as limited financial resources and poor governance, making it a difficult proposition to break with complex, entrenched and unsustainable technologies and systems. This article highlights strategic partnerships as a way to affect a distributed agency among several sets of stakeholders to break so-called path dependencies, which occur when such unsustainable pathways arise, stabilize and become self-reinforcing over time. Experiences from a North-South collaborative effort provide some lessons in such partnership building: In Uganda and Denmark, respectively, the World Wildlife Fund and the network organization access2innovation have mobilized stakeholders around improving the municipal solid waste management system in Kasese District.

This paper first briefly surveys the energy releases in some major accidents. It then examines the analyses of the explosion at the Buncefield fuel storage site in the UK, one of the most intense accidental explosions in recent times. This followed the release of approximately 300 tonnes of winter-grade gasoline, when a 15 m high storage tank was overfilled for about 40 min before ignition of the resulting flammable mixture.

Phantom sensations in people with complete spinal cord lesions: a grounded theory perspective.

Purpose: Phantom sensations are somatic phenomena arising from denervated parts of the body. There is very little research, and much diagnostic confusion, regarding such experiences in people with spinal cord injuries. Sudden respiratory arrest following retrobulbar block, a complication which has gained increasing attention, is explained by an experimental study in which radiopaque dye was injected into the intraorbital subdural space, as could easily be done in a living patient, and was shown by radiography to diffuse posteriorly along the subdural space to the midbrain surrounding the respiratory center. Clinical implications are discussed.

Scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts in experimental ocular vasoproliferation.

Scanning electron microscopy of vascular casts was used to investigate three experimental models of neovascularization. In each experimental situation, the casts provided a valuable three dimensional representation of the newly formed blood vessels and permitted subclassification of the vessels within normal and proliferating vascular networks. They defined also the predominant origin of new vessels from venules and capillaries, and enabled the evolution of proliferating vessels into arterioles and venules to be documented.

There was often alternation in inspiratory and expiratory tidal volumes and mean flows, and in expiratory duration, but not in inspiratory duration.
