Article Synopsis
  • French Guiana is a unique region notable for its rich biodiversity and diverse communities, yet it faces paradoxes such as high poverty rates with 50% of the population living below the poverty line.
  • The territory experiences a mix of health challenges, including common infectious diseases like HIV and malaria, which require tailored medical approaches due to their unique local characteristics.
  • European resources in French Guiana facilitate advanced diagnostic and treatment options, enhancing research opportunities despite the smaller population compared to surrounding countries, and enabling better management of both common and rare diseases.

Background: Adult T-cell leukemia/lymphoma (ATL), one of the most aggressive cancers in the world, occurs in 5% of the 10 million people living with HTLV-1 worldwide. French Guiana, a French overseas territory in South America, is one of the highest endemic areas of HTLV-1 worldwide. Here, we describe the demographic and clinical characteristics and outcome of ATL in this area.

The French National Cancer Institute, in its ten-year roadmap, has defined an axis 4: "ensuring that progress benefits all". The Association francophone sur les soins oncologiques de support wished to take stock of cancer care for gender and sexual minorities. The authors, who have a sociological and oncological background, have gathered the main data from the French-language literature limited to sociological aspects.

Gastric (G) and gastro-esophageal junction (GEJ) adenocarcinomas are of the most common and deadly cancers worldwide and affect mainly patients over 70 years at diagnosis. Older age has been associated in gastric cancers with distal tumour location, well-differentiated adenocarcinoma and microsatellite instability and is not identified itself as an independent prognostic factor. As immune checkpoint inhibitors recently changed the landmark of advanced G and GEJ adenocarcinomas treatment, we decided to perform a literature review to define the evidence-level of clinical data in older patients.

Background: The median age of prostate cancer diagnosis is 66 years, and the median age of men who die of the disease is eighty years. The public health impact of prostate cancer is already substantial and, given the rapidly ageing world population, can only increase. In this context, the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) Task Forces have, since 2010, been developing guidelines for the management of senior adults with prostate cancer.

Alanine and aspartate are essential transfer metabolites for C species of the NAD-malic enzyme and phosphoenolpyruvate carboxykinase subtype. To some degree both amino acids are also part of the metabolite shuttle in NADP-malic enzyme plants. In comparison with C species, the majority of C species are therefore characterised by enhanced expression and activity of alanine and aspartate aminotransferases (AT) in the photosynthetically active tissue.

Purpose Frailty classifications of older patients with cancer have been developed to assist physicians in selecting cancer treatments and geriatric interventions. They have not been compared, and their performance in predicting outcomes has not been assessed. Our objectives were to assess agreement among four classifications and to compare their predictive performance in a large cohort of in- and outpatients with various cancers.

Article Synopsis
  • * Data from 333 patients showed that taxane therapy significantly improved overall and progression-free survival compared to nontaxane therapy, even among frail patients, and was generally well tolerated with specific side effects.
  • * The findings indicate that taxane therapy may be more beneficial for older adults with mCRPC than other treatments, and treatment decisions should not solely rely on a patient's age.

Long-term assessment of the effects of psychotherapy for personality disorders (PDs) in a natural environment is an important task. Such research contributes to enlarge the practice-based evidence, embedded in broad collaborations between clinicians and researchers in psychotherapy for PDs. The present pilot study used rigorous assessment procedures and incorporated feedback loops of outcome information to the therapists in demonstrating the effects of psychotherapy for PD in a natural setting.

In 2010, the International Society of Geriatric Oncology (SIOG) developed treatment guidelines for men with prostate cancer who are older than 70 years old. In 2013, a new multidisciplinary SIOG working group was formed to update these recommendations. The consensus of the task force is that older men with prostate cancer should be managed according to their individual health status, not according to age.

Background: Patients with high-risk gestational trophoblastic neoplasia (GTN) need multi-agent chemotherapy to be cured. The most common regimen is etoposide (E), methotrexate (M) and actinomycin D (A), alternating weekly with cyclophosphamide (C) plus vincristine (O) (EMA/CO). Cisplatin (P) is a very active drug, but it is usually restricted to second-line therapies.

This open-label, phase II trial assessed the efficacy and safety of two doses of nintedanib, a triple angiokinase inhibitor targeting vascular endothelial growth factor, fibroblast growth factor, and platelet-derived growth factor signaling, in patients with metastatic castration-resistant prostate cancer (mCRPC) following progression on docetaxel-based regimens. Patients were randomized to nintedanib 150 mg (arm A, n=40) or 250 mg (arm B, n=41) twice daily for 6 months unless disease progression or adverse events (AEs) led to discontinuation. The primary endpoint was the prostate-specific antigen (PSA) response rate (confirmed PSA decline of ≥20% from baseline).

The contribution of occupational exposures to rare cancers, which represent 22% of all cancers diagnosed annually in Europe, remains insufficiently considered. We conducted a comprehensive review of occupational risk factors in 67 rare cancers (annual incidence <6/100,000). An examination of relevant articles in PubMed (1960-2012) and the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) monographs revealed that 26 cancer sites, such as mesothelioma, nasal, larynx, liver, ovarian cancer, bone sarcoma, and hematopoietic malignancies were consistently linked to occupational factors.

Germ-cell tumours (GCTs) are the most common type of cancer in young men. Since the late 1970s, disseminated GCT have been a paradigm for curable metastatic cancer and metastatic GCTs are highly curable with cisplatin-based chemotherapy followed by surgical resection of residual masses. Patients' prognosis is currently assessed using the International Germ-Cell Consensus Classification (IGCCC) and used to adapt the burden of chemotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aimed to determine the optimal dose of weekly docetaxel for elderly cancer patients, addressing the issue of their under-representation in clinical trials.
  • Sixty-eight patients aged 70 and older were divided into three risk groups based on age, health status, and comorbidities, with varying doses administered.
  • Findings suggested that a dose of 40mg/m²/week can be safely used without excessive toxicity, although the defined risk groups did not effectively differentiate toxicity among patients.

Primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma, a tumor of the sweat glands, is a rare tumor localized to the eyelid in 40% of cases. We report a case of a primary cutaneous mucinous carcinoma of the upper eyelid in a 53-year-old Caucasian male who appeared to have a chalazion. Histology showed rows and lobules of epithelial cells with discretely anisonucleotic nuclei and few mitotic figures scattered throughout the tumor cells, surrounded by a mucoid substance.
