Farnesyl pyrophosphate derivatives bearing an additional oxygen atom at position 5 proved to be very suitable for expanding the substrate promiscuity of sesquiterpene synthases (STSs) and the formation of new oxygenated terpenoids. Insertion of an oxygen atom in position 9, however, caused larger restraints that led to restricted acceptance by STSs. In order to reduce some of the proposed restrictions, two FPP-ether derivatives with altered substitution pattern around the terminal olefinic double bond were designed.

Background: Spinometry is a radiation-free method to three-dimensional spine imaging that provides additional information about the functional gait patterns related to the pelvis and lower extremities. This radiation-free technology uses the surface topography of the trunk to analyze surface asymmetry and identify bony landmarks, thereby aiding the assessment of spinal deformity and supporting long-term treatment regimes. Especially reliable dynamic spinometric data for spine and pelvis are necessary to evaluate the management of non-specific back pain.

The new farnesyl pyrophosphate (FPP) derivative with a shifted olefinic double bond from C6-C7 to C7-C8 is accepted and converted by the sesquiterpene cyclases protoilludene synthase (Omp7) as well as viridiflorene synthase (Tps32). In both cases, a so far unknown germacrene derivative was found to be formed, which we name "germacrene F". Both cases are examples in which a modification around the central olefinic double bond in FPP leads to a change in the mode of initial cyclization (from 1→11 to 1→10).

Background: The sole presence of deep submucosal invasion is shown to be associated with a limited risk of lymph node metastasis. This justifies a local excision of suspected deep submucosal invasive colon carcinomas (T1 CCs) as a first step treatment strategy. Recently Colonoscopy-Assisted Laparoscopic Wedge Resection (CAL-WR) has been shown to be able to resect pT1 CRCs with a high R0 resection rate, but the long term outcomes are lacking.

The incorporation of nanopores into graphene nanostructures has been demonstrated as an efficient tool in tuning their band gaps and electronic structures. However, precisely embedding the uniform nanopores into graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) at the atomic level remains underdeveloped especially for in-solution synthesis due to the lack of efficient synthetic strategies. Herein we report the first case of solution-synthesized porous GNR (pGNR) with a fully conjugated backbone via the efficient Scholl reaction of tailor-made polyphenylene precursor (P1) bearing pre-installed hexagonal nanopores.

Curved graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) with hybrid edge structures have recently attracted increasing attention due to their unique band structures and electronic properties as a result of their nonplanar conformation. This work reports the solution synthesis of a long and curved multi-edged GNR (cMGNR) with unprecedented cove-armchair-gulf edge structures. The synthesis involves an efficient A B -type Diels-Alder polymerization between a diethynyl-substituted prefused bichrysene monomer (3b) and a dicyclopenta[e,l]pyrene-5,11-dione derivative (6) followed by FeCl -mediated Scholl oxidative cyclodehydrogenation of the obtained polyarylenes (P1).

Creatine monohydrate (CrM) is one of the most widely used nutritional supplements among active individuals and athletes to improve high-intensity exercise performance and training adaptations. However, research suggests that CrM supplementation may also serve as a therapeutic tool in the management of some chronic and traumatic diseases. Creatine supplementation has been reported to improve high-energy phosphate availability as well as have antioxidative, neuroprotective, anti-lactatic, and calcium-homoeostatic effects.

Article Synopsis
  • Graphene nanoribbons (GNRs) are being explored as advanced materials for nanoelectronics due to their unique electronic properties, especially when they have hybrid edge structures.
  • A new type of cove-edged GNR with short zigzag segments has been created, allowing for adjustable electronic properties that can transition from semiconducting to nearly metallic by altering the lengths and distances of its segments.
  • The synthesis of this GNR family was achieved through a specific polymer reaction and demonstrated impressive characteristics, including a narrow optical bandgap of 0.99 eV and high carrier mobility, making it a strong candidate for future nanoelectronic applications.

The bicyclic amido-substituted silicon(I) ring compound Si {N(SiMe )Mes} 2 (Mes=Mesityl=2,4,6-Me C H ) features enhanced zwitterionic character and different reactivity from the analogous compound Si {N(SiMe )Dipp} 1 (Dipp=2,6- Pr C H ) due to the smaller mesityl substituents. In a reaction with the N-heterocyclic carbene NHC (1,3,4,5-tetramethyl-imidazol-2-ylidene), we observe adduct formation to give Si {N(SiMe )Mes}  ⋅ NHC (3). This adduct reacts further with the Lewis acid BH to yield the Lewis acid-base complex Si {N(SiMe )Mes}  ⋅ NHC  ⋅ BH (4).

Introduction: Regional and league-specific differences in injury risk and time loss have been observed in professional European football. Besides time of play or different pre-season preparations, possible reasons may also include medical and sport-scientific support. A survey of what UEFA deems to be the best four football clubs has therefore been conducted to investigate the personnel status in the fields of medicine, physiotherapy, massage, sports science and athletic and "strength and conditioning" coaching in order to compare the Erste Bundesliga with the first leagues of the other countries.

Hydroxypropyl cellulose (HPC) and arylazopyrazole (AAP) mixtures can be remotely controlled by light and temperature. We show that the hydrophobic interactions between HPC polymers with AAP surfactants can be drastically changed by changing the surfactants configuration through E/Z photo-isomerization. E-AAP interacts strongly with HPC which causes a dramatic increase of the critical temperature Tc of the polymers' phase transition and a loss of the coil-to-globule transition, while the hydrophobic interactions of HPC with Z-AAP are drastically reduced.
