The cold pressor test (CPT) elicits strong cardiovascular reactions activation of the sympathetic nervous system (SNS), yielding subsequent increases in heart rate (HR) and blood pressure (BP). However, little is known on how exposure to the CPT affects cardiac ventricular repolarization. Twenty-eight healthy males underwent both a bilateral feet CPT and a warm water (WW) control condition on two separate days, one week apart.

Background: Pharmacological manipulation of cortisol levels is instrumental in elucidating mechanisms underlying acute stress effects and for distinguishing the physiological and behavioral effects of cortisol from those of the adrenergic system. Administration (oral or IV) of hydrocortisone is a direct and efficient method to elevate cortisol, and thus, frequently used in psychobiological stress research. However, lowering of cortisol (i.

The DNA mismatch repair protein MutSα recognizes wrongly incorporated DNA bases and initiates their correction during DNA replication. Dysfunctions in mismatch repair lead to a predisposition to cancer. Here, we study the homozygous mutation V63E in MSH2 that was found in the germline of a patient with suspected constitutional mismatch repair deficiency syndrome who developed colorectal cancer before the age of 30.

Introduction And Hypothesis: Among women worldwide, pelvic organ prolapse (POP) is a common problem. There are three different treatment options for POP: pelvic floor muscle therapy, pessary treatment and prolapse surgery. As none of the three treatment options is clearly superior, shared decision making (SDM) is very important.

Rationale: Pre-ejection period (PEP) and T-wave amplitude (TWA) have been used to assess sympathetic nervous system (SNS) activity. Here we report two single-blinded, placebo-controlled intravenous (IV) drug application studies in which we pharmacologically modified SNS activity with epinephrine (study 1) as well as dexmedetomidine (alpha2-agonist) and yohimbine (alpha2-antagonist) (study 2). Restricted heart rate (HR) intervals were analyzed to avoid confounding effects of HR changes.

The gut microbiota strongly impacts the development of sporadic colorectal cancer (CRC), but it is largely unknown how the microbiota affects the pathogenesis of mismatch-repair-deficient CRC in the context of Lynch syndrome. In a mouse model for Lynch syndrome, we found a nearly complete loss of intestinal tumor development when animals were transferred from a conventional "open" animal facility to specific-pathogen-free (SPF) conditions. Using 16S sequencing we detected large changes in microbiota composition between the two facilities.

Rationale: Deficits in cost-benefit decision-making are a core feature of several psychiatric disorders, including substance addiction, eating disorders and bipolar disorder. Mesocorticolimbic dopamine signalling has been implicated in various processes related to cognition and reward, but its precise role in reward valuation and cost-benefit trade-off decisions remains incompletely understood.

Objectives: We assessed the role of mesocorticolimbic dopamine signalling in the relationship between price and consumption of sucrose, to better understand its role in cost-benefit decisions.

Children whose parents have mental illnesses are among the most vulnerable in our communities. There is however, much that can be done to prevent or mitigate the impact of a parent's illness on children. Notwithstanding the availability of several evidence-based interventions, efforts to support these children have been limited by a lack of adequate support structures.

Background: Synchronous bilateral breast cancer (SBBC) is rare and there is little evidence describing organs at risk (OAR) and limits to the heart and lungs caused by radiotherapy (RT). Quantifying mean heart dose (MHD) and mean lung dose (MLD) from RT in this patient cohort may lead to better understanding of doses to OAR and resultant effects on clinical outcomes. The primary objective was to assess median MHD and MLD in SBBC, while secondary aims included analyses of 1) factors associated with MHD and MLD, 2) V5 and V20 values and 3) factors associated with clinical outcomes.

Inter-individual variability in behavioral and physiological response has become a well-established phenomenon in animal models of anxiety and other disorders. Such variability is even demonstrated within mouse inbred strains. A recent study showed that adaptive and non-adaptive anxiety phenotypes (measured as habituation and/or sensitization of anxiety responses) may differ within cohorts of 129 mice.

Stigma is a pervasive social mechanism with negative ramifications for people who experience mental illness. Less is known about the stigma experiences of families where a parent has a mental illness. This review aims to identify and synthesize evidence on the concept of stigma and stigma-related experiences and outcomes reported by parents and children living with parental mental illness.

Purpose: Severe radiation dermatitis (RD) is distressing and may have adverse long-term effects including fibrosis and telangiectasia. Treatment interruptions due to severe RD may increase the risk of recurrence. Two randomized trials of Mepitel film demonstrated efficacy in preventing severe RD in breast cancer, but this product has not been widely adopted in North America.

Background: In postmastectomy radiation therapy (PMRT), some centres prescribe the use of a tissue-equivalent bolus to the skin to reduce the risk of chest wall recurrence. The addition of bolus causes an increase in the skin dose, which may lead to increased risk of radiodermatitis. Radiodermatitis can decrease patients' overall quality of life, bringing into question the benefit of using the bolus.

Background: The influence of cigarette smoking on cancer risk has been well-studied. Similarly, exposure to ionizing radiation from radiotherapy (RT) can produce detrimental effects on an individual's health. In patients administered RT, there has been an observed relationship in other primary carcinomas.

Aims: Higher mean lung dose (MLD) in breast cancer patients has been associated with pneumonitis, pulmonary fibrosis and secondary lung cancer primaries. This study examined MLD in a single institution from 2014 to 18 to assess trends in median MLD (Gy) over time and factors associated with higher MLD to determine best practices for limiting lung toxicity.

Materials And Methods: General linear regressions were analysed to determine significant change in median MLD over time in patients receiving conventional or hypofractionated schedules for whole breast/chest wall (WB) radiotherapy with or without sequential boost or simultaneous integrated boost, WB tangential radiotherapy only and WB locoregional radiotherapy.

Article Synopsis
  • Breast cancer radiotherapy (RT) poses a cardiac disease risk as the dose to the heart increases; this study aimed to evaluate the mean heart dose (MHD) trends from 2011 to 2018 in breast cancer patients receiving RT.
  • Analysis of 4,687 patients revealed that the median MHD for left-sided RT decreased until 2015 before increasing again, largely due to the rise in wide tangent techniques post-2015.
  • Essential treatment factors linked to higher MHD included locoregional RT, wide tangents, and various characteristics of the treatment area, signaling the need for careful planning to minimize cardiac exposure during RT.

Purpose: Breast cancer patients receiving radiotherapy (RT) commonly report pain, contributing to physical and emotional distress, and potentially resulting in poor quality of life. This study prospectively identified trends and risk factors in patient-reported pain associated with breast irradiation using the Edmonton Symptom Assessment Scale (ESAS) and a study-specific Skin Symptom Assessment (SSA).

Methods: Before RT and once per week during RT, patients completed the ESAS and SSA.
