Cephalomedullary nail fixation of geriatric intertrochanteric femur fractures is, and will continue to be, performed by most orthopaedic surgeons. The influence of technical factors on outcome is clear, and it is imperative that orthopaedic surgeons use contemporary strategies to achieve adequate reduction and fixation. The lateral patient position on a traction table potentially confers several advantages which surgeons can use to achieve quality outcomes even in patients who have challenging body morphology and/or fracture anatomy.

Objectives: The extent and timing of surgery in severely injured patients remains an unsolved problem in orthopaedic trauma. Different laboratory values or scores have been used to try to predict mortality and estimate physiological reserve. Aim: This systematic review evaluated the surgical outcomes of various ankle fracture treatment modalities in patients with Diabetes Mellitus as well as the methodological quality of the studies.

Methods: For our review, four online databases were searched: PubMed, MEDLINE (Clarivate Analytics), CINAHL (Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health) and Web of Science (Clarivate Analytics). The overall methodological quality of the studies was assessed with the Coleman Methodology Score.

Poorly controlled diabetes with comorbid manifestations negatively affects outcomes in lower extremity trauma, increasing the risk of short-term and long-term complications.
