Unlabelled: Social media (SM) is widely used among adolescents, making the relationship between SM and affect in this population important to understand. However, previous research has largely used methods that do not capture the dynamic and variable nature of SM or measure the consistency of effects across global affect and specific emotions. The current study examined the momentary relationship between positive and negative SM experiences and global positive affect (PA) and negative affect (NA), as well as specific affective states of PA and NA.

Disruptions in appetite-regulating hormones may contribute to the development and/or maintenance of avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID). No study has previously assessed fasting levels of orexigenic ghrelin or anorexigenic peptide YY (PYY), nor their trajectory in response to food intake among youth with ARFID across the weight spectrum. We measured fasting and postprandial (30, 60, 120 minutes post-meal) levels of ghrelin and PYY among 127 males and females with full and subthreshold ARFID (n = 95) and healthy controls (HC; n = 32).

SWI/SNF enzymes are heterogeneous multi-subunit complexes that utilize the energy from ATP hydrolysis to remodel chromatin structure, facilitating transcription, DNA replication, and repair. In mammalian cells, distinct sub-complexes, including cBAF, ncBAF, and PBAF exhibit varying subunit compositions and have different genomic functions. Alterations in the SWI/SNF complex and sub-complex functions are a prominent feature in cancer, making them attractive targets for therapeutic intervention.

Article Synopsis
  • ARFID and AN are both restrictive eating disorders but differ in motivations for inadequate dietary intake; ARFID’s cognitive characteristics in relation to impulsivity and future outcome valuation are under-researched compared to AN's.
  • In a study with 104 participants, findings showed that individuals with ARFID had a steeper delay discounting compared to those with AN, suggesting different cognitive processes between the two disorders, whereas ARFID did not significantly differ from healthy controls.
  • This research highlights the need for understanding cognitive traits specific to each eating disorder to improve treatment strategies, indicating that ARFID and AN have distinct cognitive profiles.

Article Synopsis
  • Cognitive-behavioral therapy for avoidant/restrictive food intake disorder (ARFID) targets three motivations: sensory sensitivity, lack of interest/low appetite, and fear of aversive consequences, using specific modular interventions for each.
  • In a study with 42 participants aged 10-55, significant correlations were found between decreases in these mechanisms and reductions in ARFID severity, with notable weekly improvements observed across the board.
  • Results indicated that participants receiving the sensory and fear modules experienced greater improvements than those who did not, while lack of interest/low appetite showed potential for improvement regardless of module participation, suggesting the need for future studies to further explore treatment effectiveness and measurement.

Objectives: Throughout the SARS-CoV-2 pandemic, Germany like other countries lacked adaptive population-based panels to monitor the spread of epidemic diseases.

Methods: To fill a gap in population-based estimates needed for winter 2022/23 we resampled in the German SARS-CoV-2 cohort study MuSPAD in mid-2022, including characterization of systemic cellular and humoral immune responses by interferon-γ-release assay (IGRA) and CLIA/IVN assay. We were able to confirm categorization of our study population into four groups with differing protection levels against severe COVID-19 courses based on literature synthesis.

Background: Sleep problems are common in adolescents and have detrimental impacts on physical and mental health and daily functioning. Evidence-based treatment like cognitive behaviour therapy for insomnia (CBT-I) is often hard to access, and adolescents may not engage in and adhere to longer, clinician-delivered interventions. Brief, self-guided, and accessible sleep interventions are needed.

Healthy, untreated cows of nine dairy herds from the Swiss Canton Tessin were analyzed three times within one year to identify the most abundant species of the intramammary bacteriome. Aseptically collected milk samples were cultured and bacteria identified using MALDI-TOF. Of 256 cows analyzed, 96% were bacteriologically positive and 80% of the 1,024 quarters were positive for at least one bacterial species.

Article Synopsis
  • The IMMUNEBRIDGE project aimed to estimate protection levels against SARS-CoV-2 infection and severe COVID-19 in the German population during summer 2022, addressing a lack of real-time data.
  • The study involved over 33,000 participants and assessed protection based on self-reported infections/vaccinations and antibody responses, identifying confirmed exposures that indicated varying protection levels.
  • Findings showed moderate to high protection against severe COVID-19, but low protection against infection, especially in older adults and those with comorbidities, highlighting the need for more protective measures for these vulnerable groups.

As of today, 75% of infectious human diseases are caused by zoonotic pathogens, which use the interface between humans and animal species to cross. Due to this ability, zoonoses affect more than just one health sector and the effective control is a matter of the One Health concept. One defining feature of this concept is the "human-animal-interface".

Anorexia nervosa (AN) and atypical AN (AtypAN) are complex neurobiological illnesses that typically onset in adolescence with an often treatment-refractory and chronic illness trajectory. Aberrant eating behaviors in this population have been linked to abnormalities in food reward and cognitive control, but prior studies have not examined respective contributions of clinical characteristics and metabolic state. Research is needed to identify specific disruptions and inform novel intervention targets to improve outcomes.

In cheese production, microorganisms are usually added at the beginning of the process as primary starters to drive curd acidification, while secondary microorganisms, with other pro-technological features important for cheese ripening, are added as selected cultures. This research aimed to investigate the possibilities of influencing and selecting the raw milk microbiota using artisanal traditional methods, providing a simple method to produce a natural supplementary culture. We investigated the production of an enriched raw milk whey culture (eRWC), a natural adjunct microbial culture produced from mixing an enriched raw milk (eRM) with a natural whey culture (NWC).
