Regular aerobic activity is associated with a reduced risk of chronic pain in humans and rodents. Our previous studies in rodents have shown that prior voluntary wheel running can normalize redox signaling at the site of peripheral nerve injury, attenuating subsequent neuropathic pain. However, the full extent of neuroprotection offered by voluntary wheel running after peripheral nerve injury is unknown.

Amyloidogenic propensity of self-assembling peptides and their adjuvant potential for use as DNA vaccines.

De novo designed peptides that self-assemble into cross-β rich fibrillar biomaterials have been pursued as an innovative platform for the development of adjuvant- and inflammation-free vaccines. However, they share structural and morphological properties similar to amyloid species implicated in neurodegenerative diseases, which has been a long-standing concern for their successful translation. Here, we comprehensively characterize the amyloidogenic character of the amphipathic self-assembling cross-β peptide KFE, compared to pathological amyloid and amyloid-like proteins α-synuclein (α-syn) and TDP-43.

Lysine specific demethylase 1 is a molecular driver and therapeutic target in sarcoma.

Sarcomas are a diverse group of tumors with numerous oncogenic drivers, and display varied clinical behaviors and prognoses. This complexity makes diagnosis and the development of new and effective treatments challenging. An incomplete understanding of both cell of origin and the biological drivers of sarcomas complicates efforts to develop clinically relevant model systems and find new molecular targets.

Preconditioning by voluntary wheel running attenuates later neuropathic pain via nuclear factor E2-related factor 2 antioxidant signaling in rats.

Animal and human studies have shown that exercise prior to nerve injury prevents later chronic pain, but the mechanisms of such preconditioning remain elusive. Given that exercise acutely increases the formation of free radicals, triggering antioxidant compensation, we hypothesized that voluntary running preconditioning would attenuate neuropathic pain by supporting redox homeostasis after sciatic nerve injury in male and female rats. We show that 6 weeks of voluntary wheel running suppresses neuropathic pain development induced by chronic constriction injury across both sexes.

Quality of Life and Aesthetic Plastic Surgery: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Unlabelled: Quality of life (QoL) is an important outcome in plastic surgery. However, authors use different scales to address this subject, making it difficult to compare the outcomes. To address this discrepancy, the aim of this study was to perform a systematic review and a random effect meta-analysis.

[Prophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (ORA study)].

Objective: The aim of this study was to examine bone mineral density (BMD), frequency of osteopenia and osteoporosis in a representative sample of patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) and to describe chemoprophylaxis and treatment of osteoporosis compared to evidence-based guidelines.

Patients And Methods: In 2005 and 2006, 532 patients with RA (98 men, 434 women) aged 23-87 years were recruited from 9 German rheumatology centers. Clinical examination included a detailed documentation of osteoporosis medication.

In a cross-sectional study the prevalence of osteoporosis and osteopenia in patients with rheumatoid arthritis (ORA study) was investigated. Dose-related patterns of glucocorticoid-induced side effects.

Objective: To identify patterns of self-reported health problems relating to dose and duration of glucocorticoid intake in unselected patients with rheumatoid arthritis from routine practice.

Methods: Data from 1066 patients were analysed. The clinical status and drug treatment were reported by the physician, health problems during the past 6 months by the patient using a comprehensive list of symptoms.

New evidence confirm that antipsychotics increase mortality in demented elderly persons with behavioral symptoms. Unfortunately, donepezil was no more effective than placebo to treat agitation in these patients.

[Insufficiency fractures in rheumatology. Case report and overview].

Stress fractures occur as insufficiency fractures, with a prevalence of 0.8% in patients with rheumatological illness. The main sites of insufficiency fractures are the pelvis and sacrum, parts of the tibia and fibula that are close to the joints, and the calcaneus and hip.

The treatment of chronic constipation in elderly people: an update.

Constipation is a common problem in elderly persons, with prevalence ranging from 15% to 20% in the community-dwelling elderly population and up to 50% in some studies of nursing home residents. In these patients, constipation results from a combination of risk factors, such as reduced fibre and fluid intake, decreased physical activity resulting from chronic diseases and multiple medications. Despite the high prevalence of constipation, there is surprisingly little evidence available on which to base management decisions of this common condition.

[Specialties in therapy of osteoporosis in inflammatory joint disease].

The therapeutic specialties of osteoporosis in inflammatory rheumatic diseases has gained mounting interest in the last year. The paper describes special aspects of osteoporosis in rheumatoid arthritis, ankylosing spondylitis and systemic lupus erythematodes. The problems of glucocorticoid therapy are discussed intensively with regard to the recently published recommendations for glucocorticoid-induced osteoporosis.

Zygomycosis: A report of eleven cases and a review of the Brazilian literature.

Eleven cases of zygomycosis (mucormycosis) observed throughout an eighteen year period (1982-2000) have been reviewed. The most important demographic and clinical data of seven patients were tabulated. The remaining four are related as illustrative cases.

[Drug therapy in postmenopausal osteoporosis. An analysis of healty service delivery].

Unlabelled: The current care and management of menopausal women diagnosed with osteoporosis was analysed by using two different data sets. We investigated prescriptions for drugs approved for the treatment of osteoporosis (vitamin D, calcium, fluoride, calcitonin, oestrogen/gestagen combinations, oral bisphosphonates) that were issued by general practitioners and primary care internists between February 1999 and February 2000 to women over 50 years of age diagnosed with osteoporosis (MediPlus database). For orientation purposes these data were compared to treatment data from the core documentation of regional collaborative rheumatology centres for patients with inflammatory rheumatic diseases as their primary diagnosis and osteoporosis as secondary diagnosis.

[Osteoporosis in the male].

Background: Osteoporotic fractures occur frequently also in men. Epidemiologic data from Germany indicate that more than 900,000 men are affected by osteoporotic fractures. Diagnosis and therapy of male osteoporosis are hampered by a lack of clinical studies.

Insufficiency and stress fractures of the long bones occurring in patients with rheumatoid arthritis and other inflammatory diseases, with a contribution on the possibilities of computed tomography.

In patients with long standing rheumatoid arthritis and other rheumatoid disorders, stress fractures and insufficiency fractures are not uncommon. The cause may be osteoporosis due to rheumatoid arthritis, corticosteroid therapy, joint stiffness, and deformity of the joints caused by the inflammatory process. Also, unaccustomed exercise after reconstructive joint surgery may be a cause of fractures in these patients.
