In the reported clinical case, the immediate dentoalveolar restoration (IDR) technique was applied to reconstruct the buccal bone wall, with autogenous graft of the maxillary tuberosity, which had been lost due to a root fracture, and to provide the necessary bone substrate for the installation of an implant and its provisioning. One of the greatest risks inherent in the survival of immediate implants is the maintenance of their stability during the healing period. In this case, due to a mechanical trauma in sports activity in the first postoperative month, there was a total failure in the osseointegration process, confirmed by tomographic examination of both the implant and the bone graft.

Lab-on-a-chip devices hold promise for automation of complex workflows from sample to answer with minimal consumption of reagents in portable devices. However, complex, inhomogeneous samples as they occur in environmental or food analysis may block microchannels and thus often cause malfunction of the system. Here we present the novel AutoDip platform which is based on the movement of a solid phase through the reagents and sample instead of transporting a sequence of reagents through a fixed solid phase.

Assay automation is the key for successful transformation of modern biotechnology into routine workflows. Yet, it requires considerable investment in processing devices and auxiliary infrastructure, which is not cost-efficient for laboratories with low or medium sample throughput or point-of-care testing. To close this gap, we present the LabTube platform, which is based on assay specific disposable cartridges for processing in laboratory centrifuges.

The rabies virus (RV) phosphoprotein P is a multifunctional protein involved in viral RNA synthesis and in counteracting host innate immune responses. We have previously shown that RV P gene expression levels can be regulated by using picornavirus internal ribosome entry site (IRES) elements. Here we exploited a particular feature of the foot-and-mouth disease virus (FMDV) IRES, namely, preferential initiation at a downstream initiation codon, to address the role of N-terminally truncated RV phosphoproteins usually generated in RV-infected cells through ribosomal leaky scanning.

The early systemic production of interferon (IFN)-alphabeta is an essential component of the antiviral host defense mechanisms, but is also thought to contribute to the toxic side effects accompanying gene therapy with adenoviral vectors. Here we investigated the IFN-alphabeta response to human adenoviruses (Ads) in mice. By comparing the responses of normal, myeloid (m)DC- and plasmacytoid (p)DC-depleted mice and by measuring IFN-alphabeta mRNA expression in different organs and cells types, we show that in vivo, Ads elicit strong and rapid IFN-alphabeta production, almost exclusively in splenic mDCs.

Background: Approximately 5% of patients with malignant glioma achieve complete response (CR) after first-line combined modality treatment. Although these patients will invariably suffer from tumor recurrence, they usually do not receive any further treatment to maintain remission. According to in vitro and in vivo clinical studies, 13-cis retinoic acid (cRA) may be a promising agent for maintenance therapy in these patients.
