Objectives: To compare the total medical costs associated with operative versus non-operative medical procedures for femoral neck fractures in older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD).

Methods: This retrospective cohort study examined 4,157 Optum beneficiaries diagnosed with AD who filed an initial claim for femoral neck fracture between January 1, 2012, and December 31, 2017. Generalized linear regression with Gamma log link function was performed to evaluate total medical costs between surgical treatment and non-operative care while controlling for covariates.

Effects of burning on vegetation, soil physicochemistry and prokaryotic microbial communities in surface and subsurface peat.

Prescribed burning is a common management strategy in peatlands that has the potential to affect soil physicochemistry, alter biogeochemical cycles and trigger changes in vegetation structure. How burning affects prokaryotic community composition across different soil profiles is not well understood. This study explored the effects of prescribed burning on the diversity of prokaryotic communities in peat soils.

Background: The role of senescence in disease contexts is complex, however there is considerable evidence that depletion of senescent cells improves outcomes in a variety of contexts particularly related to aging, cognition, and neurodegeneration. Much research has shown previously that inflammation can promote cellular senescence. Microglia are a central nervous system innate immune cell that undergo senescence with aging and during neurodegeneration.

Introduction: The diagnosis of asthma is often based on characteristic patterns of symptoms in the absence of an alternative explanation, resulting in over and under diagnosis. Therefore, diagnostic guidelines usually recommend including confirmation of variable airflow obstruction. Some recommend using a sequence of objective tests; however the tests used, the specific cut-off values and the specified order are yet to be validated.

A comprehensive toxicological analysis of panel of unregulated e-cigarettes to human health.

Electronic cigarettes, commonly referred to as e-cigarettes have gained popularity over recent years especially among young individuals. In the light of the escalating prevalence of the use of these products and their potential for long-term health effects, in this study as the first of its kind a comprehensive toxicological profiling of the liquid from a panel of unregulated e-cigarettes seized in the UK was undertaken using an in vitro co-culture model of the upper airways. The data showed that e-cigarettes caused a dose dependent increase in cell death and inflammation manifested by enhanced release of IL1ß and IL6.

Asthma diagnosis: a comparison of established diagnostic guidelines in adults with respiratory symptoms.

Background: Considerable variability exists between asthma diagnostic guidelines. We tested the performance characteristics of the European Respiratory Society (ERS), the National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) and the Global Initiative for Asthma (GINA) guidelines for the diagnosis of asthma in adults.

Methods: In this prospective observational study (ISRCTN-11676160, May 2019-June 2022), participants referred from primary care with clinician-suspected asthma underwent comprehensive investigation including: spirometry, bronchodilator reversibility, fractional exhaled nitric oxide, peak expiratory flow variability, bronchial challenge testing with methacholine and mannitol, and responsiveness to inhaled corticosteroid therapy.

Neuroinflammation can positively influence axon regeneration following injury in the central nervous system. Inflammation promotes the release of neurotrophic molecules and stimulates intrinsic proregenerative molecular machinery in neurons, but the detailed mechanisms driving this effect are not fully understood. We evaluated how microRNAs are regulated in retinal neurons in response to intraocular inflammation to identify their potential role in axon regeneration.

The Bright Ideas TBI Camp: fostering innovation in interprofessional education and collaborative practice for traumatic brain injury by students in rehabilitation professions.

This report describes an innovative interprofessional education collaborative practice (IPCP) experience for rehabilitation professions students using a unique on-campus camp model through a community-academic partnership. Throughout the three-day camp, known as the Bright Ideas TBI Camp, interprofessional student groups deliver tailored health and wellness services to individuals with disabilities due to traumatic brain injury and their caregivers. Initial program evaluation suggests that this camp model offers an effective IPCP experience for students while addressing community health needs.

Mount for spectroscopic analysis of samples under sustained tensile stress.

Spectroscopic methods offer valuable insights into the molecular and structural changes induced by stress, but existing techniques are often unable to perform real-time measurements during deformation. A novel solid open mount design is presented that enables spectroscopic investigations of materials under sustained tensile stress while maintaining crucial alignment of the optical system. The mount design allows for sample movement in response to applied strain while maintaining the position of the sample plane, ensuring consistent and reliable spectroscopic measurements.

Market response to environmental policy via public procurement: An empirical analysis of bids and prices.

This paper studies the effect of Green Public Procurement (GPP) on competition, bids, and winning bids under two different regulation periods where the latter include more explicitly expressed GPP ambitions. Based on detailed data from Swedish internal cleaning service procurements, our results imply that environmental considerations might not influence the bids as required for GPP to be considered an effective environmental policy instrument. Over time, lower degree of competition and increased bids are found.

Adherence to caregiver-administered intravenous immunosuppressant medications in pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant.

Background: The purpose of this study was to describe taking, timing, and dosing adherence to home caregiver-administered intravenous (IV) immunosuppressants in a sample of pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant (HCT) recipients.

Procedures: Sixteen children who had undergone HCT, ages 3 months to 15 years, and their caregivers participated. All caregivers were biological mothers.

Objectives: The purpose of this study was to compare physiological responses to myofascial release (MFR) and passive limb movement (PLM).

Design: Nineteen (23 ± 2.6yrs) adults (10 men and 9 women) completed two experiments on separate days: MFR and PLM.

Donor heart refusal after circulatory death: An analysis of United Network for Organ Sharing refusal codes.

Objective: Donor hearts procured after circulatory death (DCD) may significantly increase the number of hearts available for transplantation. The purpose of this study was to analyze current DCD and brain-dead donor (DBD) heart transplantation rates and characterize organ refusal using the most up-to-date United Network for Organ Sharing (UNOS) and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network data.

Methods: We analyzed UNOS and Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network DBD and DCD candidate, transplantation, and demographic data from 2020 through 2022 and 2022 refusal code data to characterize DCD heart use and refusal.

Introduction: Addressing femoral neck fractures resulting from ground-level falls in older adults with Alzheimer's disease (AD) involves a personalized treatment plan. There is considerable ongoing debate concerning the relative advantages and disadvantages of surgical treatment (internal fixation or arthroplasty) vs nonoperative treatment for femoral neck fractures in older persons with AD.

Methods: This retrospective cohort study compared the mortality, hazard ratio, and survival rate between operative and nonoperative treatments, controlling for patients' demographic information and baseline health status.

Anaesthetic records: an evaluation of variation across England.

We collected blank non-specialist anaesthetic records from 71 National Health Service Trusts in England. A data set was established by collating all data items found in an initial tranche of 28 records. All 71 records were subsequently analysed for each data item in this data set.

Autism genes converge on microtubule biology and RNA-binding proteins during excitatory neurogenesis.

Recent studies have identified over one hundred high-confidence (hc) autism spectrum disorder (ASD) genes. Systems biological and functional analyses on smaller subsets of these genes have consistently implicated excitatory neurogenesis. However, the extent to which the broader set of hcASD genes are involved in this process has not been explored systematically nor have the biological pathways underlying this convergence been identified.

Translating high-confidence (hc) autism spectrum disorder (ASD) genes into viable treatment targets remains elusive. We constructed a foundational protein-protein interaction (PPI) network in HEK293T cells involving 100 hcASD risk genes, revealing over 1,800 PPIs (87% novel). Interactors, expressed in the human brain and enriched for ASD but not schizophrenia genetic risk, converged on protein complexes involved in neurogenesis, tubulin biology, transcriptional regulation, and chromatin modification.

Zotarolimus (ABT-578) is a sirolimus derivative that, like sirolimus and everolimus, is an inhibitor of cell growth via inhibition of the mechanistic target of rapamycin (mTOR). Zotarolimus was developed for coating coronary stents to prevent smooth muscle cell proliferation and restenosis. Albeit zotarolimus-eluting cardiovascular devices have been on the market for years, details of zotarolimus drug metabolism in humans are still unknown.

In multiple sclerosis (MS), the invasion of the central nervous system by peripheral immune cells is followed by the activation of resident microglia and astrocytes. Introduction: Pulmonary embolism (PE) is a recognized cause of death in hospitalized trauma patients, yet less is known about PE after discharge.

Patients & Methods: All post-discharge, autopsy-demonstrated, fatal PE resulting from trauma within a large US county over six years were analyzed. Counts, percentages, mean values, SD, and IQR were calculated for all variables.
