Identification of osteoclast-osteoblast coupling factors in humans reveals links between bone and energy metabolism.

Bone remodeling consists of resorption by osteoclasts followed by formation by osteoblasts, and osteoclasts are a source of bone formation-stimulating factors. Here we utilize osteoclast ablation by denosumab (DMAb) and RNA-sequencing of bone biopsies from postmenopausal women to identify osteoclast-secreted factors suppressed by DMAb. Based on these analyses, LIF, CREG2, CST3, CCBE1, and DPP4 are likely osteoclast-derived coupling factors in humans.

Phenological shifts alter the seasonal structure of pollinator assemblages in Europe.

Pollinators play an important role in terrestrial ecosystems by providing key ecosystem functions and services to wild plants and crops, respectively. The sustainable provision of such ecosystem functions and services requires diverse pollinator communities over the seasons. Despite evidence that climate warming shifts pollinator phenology, a general assessment of these shifts and their consequences on pollinator assemblages is still lacking.

Multiple myeloma is caused by abnormal plasma cells that accumulate in the bone marrow and interact with resident cells of the bone microenvironment to drive disease progression and development of an osteolytic bone disease. Bone marrow adipocytes (BMAds) are emerging as having important endocrine functions that can support myeloma cell growth and survival. However, how BMAds respond to infiltrating tumor cells remains poorly understood.

The prepackaged cheese shred category has steadily increased over the past few years, and Cheddar shreds represent the highest volume in this category. Recent studies have established extrinsic attributes that drive purchase in this category, but no published studies have addressed the intrinsic flavor and texture properties that drive consumer liking. The objective of this study was to determine the desirable flavor and functional attributes for Cheddar cheese shreds.

Background: The HIV epidemic in Eastern and Southern Africa is characterized by a high incidence and prevalence of HIV infection among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) aged 15-24 years. For instance, in some countries, HIV prevalence in AGYW aged 20-24 years exceeds that in AGYW aged 15-19 years by 2:1. Sauti (meaning voices), a project supported by the United States Agency for International Development, is providing HIV combination prevention interventions to AGYW in the Shinyanga region, Tanzania.

Introduction: The quality of urodynamic measurements in clinical practice has been debated as a matter of concern. It is considered plausible that this has a direct bearing on patient care and the perceived value of urodynamic testing.

Methods: This is a report of the proceedings of the Think Tank: "Is the value of urodynamics undermined by poor technique?" from the Annual International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society, which took place in June 2018 in Bristol, UK.

A Team-Based Approach to Introduce and Sustain the Use of the WHO Surgical Safety Checklist in Tanzania.

Introduction: Millions of patients worldwide suffer disability and death due to complications related to surgery. Many of these complications can be reduced by the use of the World Health Organization (WHO) Surgical Safety Checklist (SSC), a simple tool that can enhance teamwork and communication and improve patient safety. Despite the evidence on benefits of its use, introducing and sustaining the use of the checklist are challenging.

Methods: A think tank considered evidence from the literature and their own research experience to propose new drug targets in the urinary bladder to characterize their use to treat OAB.

Objective: Posterior circulation ischemic stroke (PCiS) constitutes 20-30% of ischemic stroke cases. Detailed information about differences between PCiS and anterior circulation ischemic stroke (ACiS) remains scarce. Such information might guide clinical decision making and prevention strategies.

Background: Little has been documented about partner violence among adolescent girls and young women (AGYW) who are out of school, a factor associated with HIV acquisition. To understand areas for prioritising HIV prevention intervention efforts, we explored the prevalence and correlates of partner violence among out of school AGYW in Shinyanga, Tanzania.

Methods: A cross-sectional analysis of data from AGYW aged 15-23 years recruited in a cluster randomised trial conducted between October and December 2017 was used to examine correlates of partner violence.

Lung tumor cells inhibit bone mineralization and osteoblast activity.

Patients with non-small cell lung cancer (NSLC) often develop skeletal complications and fractures. To understand mechanisms of bone loss, we developed a murine model of non-metastatic NSLC. Decreased bone mineral density, trabecular thickness and mineralization, without an increase in bone resorption, were observed in vivo in mice injected with Lewis lung adenocarcinoma (LLC1) cells in the absence of tumor cell metastases.

Alcohol-related trauma reinjury prevention with hospital-based screening in adult populations: An Eastern Association for the Surgery of Trauma evidence-based systematic review.

Background: Unaddressed alcohol use among injured patients may result in recurrent injury or death. Many trauma centers incorporate alcohol screening, brief intervention, and referral to treatment for injured patients with alcohol use disorders, but systematic reviews evaluating the impact of these interventions are lacking.

Methods: An evidence-based systematic review was performed to answer the following population, intervention, comparator, outcomes question: Among adult patients presenting for acute injury, should emergency department, trauma center, or hospital-based alcohol screening with brief intervention and/or referral to treatment be instituted compared with usual care to prevent or decrease reinjury, hospital readmission, alcohol-related offenses, and/or alcohol consumption? A librarian-initiated query of PubMed, MEDLINE, and the Cochrane Library was performed.

Introduction: Research for management of benign prostate obstruction (BPO) for adult males remains a cornerstone of urology research. This landscape has witnessed the rise and fall of multiple therapies, both surgical and medical. Our aim was to formally evaluate the publication trends for these interventions over the past 20 years.

Identification of the source of volatile sulfur compounds produced in milk during thermal processing.

Volatile sulfur compounds in ultra-pasteurized (UP) milk are the major contributors to sulfur/burnt and eggy flavors, and these flavors are disliked by consumers. Previous research has established distinct differences in flavor profiles of fluid milk processed by high temperature, short time pasteurization (HTST) and UP by direct steam injection (DSI-UP) or indirect heat (IND-UP). An understanding of the contribution of the individual milk proteins to sulfur off-flavors would clarify the source of sulfur flavors in UP milks.

Viscosity drives texture perception of protein beverages more than hydrocolloid type.

Hydrocolloids are added to alter rheological properties of beverages but have other properties that can contribute to overall taste and texture perception. In this study, tapioca starch and λ-carrageenan were used to determine how hydrocolloid type, viscosity level (4-6 mPa·s, 25-30 mPa·s, and 50-60 mPa·s at 50 s ), and complexity of the system (aqueous, skim milk, or whole milk) influence sensory taste and texture of fluids. All fluids were shear thinning; however, skim milk and whole milk solutions that contained carrageenan had much higher low shear viscosity and lower high shear viscosity than those with starch.

Tissue response to applied loading using different designs of penile compression clamps.

Penile compression devices (PCD) or clamps are applied to compress the urethra and prevent urinary incontinence (UI). PCDs are more secure and less likely to leak than pads, allowing men the opportunity to participate in short-term, vigorous activities. However, they are uncomfortable, can cause pressure ulcers (PU) and affect penile blood flow.

International myeloma working group consensus recommendations on imaging in monoclonal plasma cell disorders.

Recent advances in the treatment of multiple myeloma have increased the need for accurate diagnosis of the disease. The detection of bone and bone marrow lesions is crucial in the investigation of multiple myeloma and often dictates the decision to start treatment. Furthermore, detection of minimal residual disease is important for prognosis determination and treatment planning, and it has underscored an unmet need for sensitive imaging methods that accurately assess patient response to multiple myeloma treatment.

Consumer insights on prepackaged Cheddar cheese shreds using focus groups, conjoint analysis, and qualitative multivariate analysis.

This study established attractive attributes and drivers of purchase for prepackaged Cheddar cheese shreds. Seven focus groups of Cheddar cheese shred consumers (n = 61) were conducted to probe consumer beliefs regarding packaging, ingredients, label claims, and applications of prepackaged Cheddar cheese shreds. Subsequently, an online survey was developed utilizing the key attributes from the focus groups.
