Objectives: We investigated the long-term impact of early childhood malaria prophylaxis on cognitive and educational outcomes.
Design: This was a household-based cluster-controlled intervention trial.
Setting: The study was conducted in 15 villages situated between 32 km to the east and 22 km to the west of the town of Farafenni, the Gambia, on the north bank of the River Gambia.
Background And Aims: Bispectral (BIS) monitoring provides an objective, non-invasive measure of the level of consciousness in sedated patients. BIS has been shown to lag behind the level of sedation during induction and emergence of sedation with propofol. In this study, we sought to determine whether BIS is a useful adjunctive maneuver to registered nurse-administered propofol sedation (NAPS) as measured by reductions in recovery time and doses of propofol administered.

Temporal Northern blot analysis of cytokine messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in granulomatous baboon livers demonstrated tissue-specific expression. Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and migration inhibitory factor (MIF) mRNAs were expressed strongly at week 6 of infection and decayed thereafter, whereas interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), IL-2, IL-10, and IL-12 mRNAs were first expressed at week 12, with IFN-gamma and IL-12 mRNA expression persisting until week 17.

The children in the treatment group were screened for infection with Schistosoma haematobium and hookworm at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months; infected children were given albendazole against hookworm and praziquantel against schistosomiasis. The control group received a placebo and did not undergo parasitological screening until 15 months after the baseline.

Objective: To examine the use of such expert opinion in determining comorbidities associated with atopic dermatitis/eczema (AD/E), which were assessed as part of a recent third-party payer cost-of-illness study.
Design: To identify the disease-related comorbidities that would represent costs associated with AD/E, physicians on an expert panel were asked individually and then collectively to group all International Classification of Diseases, 9(th) Edition-Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) diagnosis codes as 'most likely', 'possibly' or 'definitely not' related to the costs of identifying and treating patients with AD/E.
