Long-term impact of malaria chemoprophylaxis on cognitive abilities and educational attainment: follow-up of a controlled trial.

Objectives: We investigated the long-term impact of early childhood malaria prophylaxis on cognitive and educational outcomes.

Design: This was a household-based cluster-controlled intervention trial.

Setting: The study was conducted in 15 villages situated between 32 km to the east and 22 km to the west of the town of Farafenni, the Gambia, on the north bank of the River Gambia.

Efficacy of bispectral monitoring as an adjunct to nurse-administered propofol sedation for colonoscopy: a randomized controlled trial.

Background And Aims: Bispectral (BIS) monitoring provides an objective, non-invasive measure of the level of consciousness in sedated patients. BIS has been shown to lag behind the level of sedation during induction and emergence of sedation with propofol. In this study, we sought to determine whether BIS is a useful adjunctive maneuver to registered nurse-administered propofol sedation (NAPS) as measured by reductions in recovery time and doses of propofol administered.

BCR ubiquitination controls BCR-mediated antigen processing and presentation.

BCR-mediated antigen processing occurs at immunologically relevant antigen concentrations and hinges on the trafficking of antigen-BCR (Ag-BCR) complexes to class II-containing multivesicular bodies (MVBs) termed MIICs. However, the molecular mechanism underlying the trafficking of Ag-BCR complexes to and within MIICs is not well understood. In contrast, the trafficking of the epidermal growth factor receptor (EGFR) to and within MVBs occurs via a well-characterized ubiquitin-dependent mechanism, which is blocked by acute inhibition of proteasome activity.

In examining ship-mediated biological invasions, most research and treatment development has focused on ballast water. Another vector that has gained attention recently is vessels arriving in a "no ballast on board" (NOBOB) condition. Such ships retain relatively small, unpumpable volumes of water and sediment in their ballast tanks.

Immuno-epidemiology of Ascaris lumbricoides infection in a high transmission community: antibody responses and their impact on current and future infection intensity.

The role of the humoral immune system in human infection with Ascaris lumbricoides remains unclear. This study documents an epidemiological investigation in a highly endemic community in Vietnam, whereby serum antibody levels were assessed before treatment and after a 6-month reinfection period. These data were examined by correlation with infection status using an age-structured approach in an attempt to help shed light on the role of the humoral immune response.

Hematopoietic stem cell mobilization with intravenous melphalan and G-CSF in patients with chemoresponsive multiple myeloma: report of a phase II trial.

Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable hematologic malignancy for which autologous hematopoietic stem cell transplantation (HCT) is a standard therapy. The optimal method of stem cell mobilization is not defined. We evaluated intravenous melphalan (60 mg/m2), the most effective agent for MM, and G-CSF (10 microg/kg/day) for mobilization.

Dynamics of the cytokine messenger RNA expression pattern in the liver of baboons infected with Schistosoma mansoni.

Periovular granulomas are the major lesions in baboons infected with Schistosoma mansoni. Temporal Northern blot analysis of cytokine messenger RNA (mRNA) expression in granulomatous baboon livers demonstrated tissue-specific expression. Interleukin 1 beta (IL-1beta, IL-6, tumor necrosis factor alpha, and migration inhibitory factor (MIF) mRNAs were expressed strongly at week 6 of infection and decayed thereafter, whereas interferon gamma (IFN-gamma), IL-2, IL-10, and IL-12 mRNAs were first expressed at week 12, with IFN-gamma and IL-12 mRNA expression persisting until week 17.

Multiplex PCR allows simultaneous detection of pathogens in ships' ballast water.

There is enormous potential for global transfer of microorganisms, including pathogens, in ships' ballast water. We contend that a major advancement in the study of ballast-water microorganisms in particular, and of aquatic pathogens in general, will be expedited sample analysis, such as provided by the elegant technology of DNA microarrays. In order to use DNA microarrays, however, one must establish the appropriate conditions to bind target sequences in samples to multiple probes on the microarrays.

A systemic type I 5 alpha-reductase inhibitor is ineffective in the treatment of acne vulgaris.

Excessive sebum production is a central aspect of the pathophysiology of acne vulgaris. Sebaceous gland function is under androgen control and it is hypothesized that dihydrotestosterone is formed by the action of 5 alpha-reductase. Type I is the controlling isoenzyme.

Anthelmintic treatment improves the hemoglobin and serum ferritin concentrations of Tanzanian schoolchildren.

To investigate the relationships between helminth infections and iron status among school-aged children, 1,115 Tanzanian children in grades 2 through 5 were randomly assigned to treatment or control groups. The children in the treatment group were screened for infection with Schistosoma haematobium and hookworm at baseline, 3 months, and 15 months; infected children were given albendazole against hookworm and praziquantel against schistosomiasis. The control group received a placebo and did not undergo parasitological screening until 15 months after the baseline.

Validation of expert opinion in identifying comorbidities associated with atopic dermatitis/eczema.

Background: The use of expert opinion is widespread in economic studies of healthcare utilisation; however, few studies have attempted to assess the validity of assumptions derived from such sources.

Objective: To examine the use of such expert opinion in determining comorbidities associated with atopic dermatitis/eczema (AD/E), which were assessed as part of a recent third-party payer cost-of-illness study.

Design: To identify the disease-related comorbidities that would represent costs associated with AD/E, physicians on an expert panel were asked individually and then collectively to group all International Classification of Diseases, 9(th) Edition-Clinical Modification (ICD-9-CM) diagnosis codes as 'most likely', 'possibly' or 'definitely not' related to the costs of identifying and treating patients with AD/E.
