We report a case of open talar fracture-dislocation (Gustilo-Anderson type IIIA) associated with a posterior tibial artery injury. The limb was aligned and splinted in the emergency department. In the operating theater, the posterior tibial artery was ligated, the talar neck fracture was reduced, and it was fixed with two Kirschner wires (K-wires).

Exoskeletons and more in general wearable mechatronic devices represent a promising opportunity for rehabilitation and assistance to people presenting with temporary and/or permanent diseases. However, there are still some limits in the diffusion of robotic technologies for neuro-rehabilitation, notwithstanding their technological developments and evidence of clinical effectiveness. One of the main bottlenecks that constrain the complexity, weight, and costs of exoskeletons is represented by the actuators.

This study describes the main design and prototyping steps of a novel haptic device for cutaneous stimulus of a hand palm. This part of the hand is fundamental in several grasping and manipulation tasks, but is still less exploited in haptics applications than other parts of the hand, as for instance the fingertips. The proposed device has a parallel tendon-based mechanical structure and is actuated by three motors positioned on the hand's back.

Many common activities of daily living like open a door or fill a glass of water, which most of us take for granted, could be an insuperable problem for people who have limited mobility or impairments. For years the unique alternative to overcame this limitation was asking for human help. Nowadays thanks to recent studies and technology developments, having an assistive devices to compensate the loss of mobility is becoming a real opportunity.

Revision total hip arthroplasty often presents surgeons with difficult bone loss problems. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of hip revision surgery according to bone stock We evaluated, in a retrospective study, 148 hip revision surgeries during 2004 to 2010. The Harris Hip Score (HHS), the acetabular cementation, the AAOS classification, the SOFCOT 99 bone loss grading and Barrack classification were used for clinical and radiological assessment.

The purpose of this study was to evaluate the results of total knee arthroplasty (TKA) following a closed wedge high tibial osteotomy (HTO). A total of 16 TKAs were performed in 16 pacients who had previously undergone a closed wedge (HTO) as a treatement for knee osteoarthritis. The radiographic results were evaluated with respect to the femurotibial angle (FTA), joint line height (JLH), tibial bone resection and Insall-Salvati ratio.

We describe here an on-line combination of a surface acoustic wave (SAW) biosensor with electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (SAW-ESI-MS) that enables the direct detection, identification, and quantification of affinity-bound ligands from a protein-ligand complex on a biosensor chip. A trapping column was used between the SAW-biosensor and the electrospray mass spectrometer equipped with a micro-guard column, which provides simultaneous sample concentration and desalting for the mass spectrometric analysis of the dissociated ligand. First applications of the on-line SAW-ESI-MS combination include (1), differentiation of β-amyloid (Aβ) epitope peptides bound to anti-Aβ antibodies; (2), the identification of immobilized Substance P peptide-calmodulin complex; (3), identification and quantification of the interaction of 3-nitrotyrosine-modified peptides with nitrotyrosine-specific antibodies; and (4), identification of immobilized anti-α-synuclein-human α-synuclein complex.

A new methodology using hydrogen/deuterium amide exchange (HDX) to determine the binding affinity of protein-peptide interactions is reported. The method, based on our previously established approach, protein ligand interaction by mass spectrometry, titration, and H/D exchange (PLIMSTEX) [J. Am.

The stoichiometries and the affinity toward simple and paired metal ions of synthetic amyloid-beta(1-40) peptide (Abeta1-40) were investigated by electrospray ion trap mass spectrometry (ESI-MS), circular dichroism (CD), and atomic force microscopy (AFM). The results lead to the working hypothesis that pH-dependent metal binding to Abeta1-40 may induce conformational changes, which affect the affinity toward other metals. A significant copper and zinc binding to Abeta1-40 peptide at pH 5.

The malignant bone and soft tissue tumors, represents, like any other type of cancer, a continuous challenge for surgeon, who is constrained to search and find new techniques, to improve not only the life expectancy, but the quality of the life too. This aim determined orthopedic surgeons to perform new operations, with a complex technique, like resection - reconstruction of the limb. In orthopedic clinic of Elias Hospital, we had 35 patients with malignant tumors of the limbs; we performed 14 resection--reconstructions, with or without preserving the joint mobility.
