Osteoarthritis (OA) is a degenerative disease of the joints, prevalent worldwide. Polydeoxyribonucleotide (PDRN) is used for treating knee OA. However, the role of PDRN in IL-1β-induced inflammatory responses in human bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (hBMSCs) remains unknown.

Effect of blind versus fluoroscopic guidance epidural blood patch in patients with intracranial hypotension.

Epidural blood patch (EBP)-the most effective treatment for intracranial hypotension (IH)-can be performed using the blind technique in the lateral position or under fluoroscopic guidance in the prone position. This study aimed to compare the effectiveness of EBP in patients with spontaneous intracranial hypotension (sIH) and iatrogenic intracranial hypotension (iIH) when performed with the blind technique in the lateral decubitus position or fluoroscopic guidance in the prone position. We reviewed IH patients who underwent EBP between January 2015 and September 2019 in a single hospital and divided them into two groups according to the type of IH.

Secondary cytoreductive surgery with and without hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy for recurrent ovarian cancer.

Background: Secondary cytoreductive surgery (CRS) can afford promising results in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer; however, the impact of hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) remains unclear. We compared the outcomes of secondary CRS combined with and without HIPEC in patients with recurrent ovarian cancer.

Methods: We retrospectively evaluated patients with recurrent ovarian cancer who underwent secondary CRS, with or without HIPEC (n=46), at the Yonsei Cancer Center between January 2006 and February 2021.

Impact of Nonselective and Selective α-1 Adrenergic Blockers on the Sedative Efficacy of Dexmedetomidine in Urologic Surgery: A Prospective, Observational Study.

BACKGROUND This study aimed to compare the impact of a-1 adrenergic blockers - nonselective (alfuzosin, doxazosin, and terazosin) and selective (silodosin and tamsulosin) - on the sedative effects of the alpha-2 adrenergic agonist dexmedetomidine (DMT) in patients undergoing urologic surgery. The primary outcome was the sedative effect of DMT as determined by the bispectral index (BIS) and Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation (MOAA/S) scale scores. MATERIAL AND METHODS One hundred eighteen patients undergoing elective urologic surgery with spinal anesthesia were recruited.

Eucalyptol induces osteoblast differentiation through ERK phosphorylation in vitro and in vivo.

Eucalyptol (EU) is monoterpene oxide that is the main component of the essential oil extracted from aromatic plants such as Eucalyptus globules. EU has therapeutic effects such as antibacterial, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant in chronic diseases including inflammation disorder, respiratory disease, and diabetic disease. However, the effects of EU on osteoblast differentiation and bone diseases such as osteoporosis have not been studied.

Perioperative considerations of pyruvate dehydrogenase complex deficiency: a case report of two consecutive anesthesia.

Background: Pyruvate dehydrogenase complex (PDHC) deficiency is a rare mitochondrial disorder caused by a genetic mutation affecting the activity of the PDHC enzyme, which plays a major role in the tricarboxylic cycle. Few cases of surgery or anesthesia have been reported. Moreover, there is no recommended anesthetic method.

A Study of 57 Patients with Prostate Cancer to Compare Outcomes of Estimated Blood Loss and Postoperative Pain Between Robot-Assisted Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy and Standard Laparoscopic Radical Prostatectomy.

BACKGROUND Robot-assisted radical prostatectomy (RARP) is becoming an increasingly common method for treatment of prostate cancer. This study aimed to compare outcomes of estimated blood loss and postoperative pain, determined by patient-controlled analgesia (PCA), between RARP and standard laparoscopic radical -prostatectomy (LRP). MATERIAL AND METHODS We enrolled 57 patients who had localized prostate cancer (28 patients in RARP, 29 patients in LRP).

A prospective double-blinded randomized control trial comparing erector spinae plane block to thoracic epidural analgesia for postoperative pain in video-assisted thoracic surgery.

Objectives: To compare the analgesic efficacies of erector spinae plane (ESP) block and thoracic epidural analgesia (TEA) in video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS).

Methods: Sixty patients undergoing VATS received patient-controlled TEA with a basal rate of 3 ml/hour (h), a bolus of 3 ml (Group E), or ESP block with programmed intermittent bolus infusions of 15 mL/3 h and a bolus of 5 ml (Group ES) for 2 postoperative days. The primary outcome was to compare pain scores at rest 24 h postoperatively between the 2 groups.

The EZ-Blocker® for one-lung ventilation in a patient with Kartagener syndrome and tracheal bronchus -a case report.

Background: The tracheal bronchus in Kartagener syndrome is a rare case that may cause difficulty in one-lung ventilation (OLV). Here we reported a case of successful OLV using bronchial blocker in a patient with tracheal bronchus and Kartagener syndrome (KS).

Paradoxical carbon dioxide embolism during laparoscopic hepatectomy without intracardiac shunt: A case report.

Background: Laparoscopic hepatectomy has recently become popular because it results in less bleeding than open hepatectomy. However, CO embolism occurs more frequently. Most CO embolisms during laparoscopic surgery are self-resolving and non-symptomatic; however, severe CO embolism may cause hypotension, cyanosis, arrhythmia, and cardiovascular collapse.

Sleep quality and emergence delirium in children undergoing strabismus surgery: a comparison between preschool- and school-age patients.

Background: Emergence delirium (ED) is common in pediatric patients undergoing general anesthesia with sevoflurane. Preoperative sleep quality is associated with the risk factors for ED. However, research on the relationship between sleep quality and ED is limited.

Incidental operating room fire from a breathing circuit warmer system: a case report.

Background: An airway-associated fire in an operating room can have devastating consequences for patients. Breathing circuit warmers (BCWs) are widely used to provide heated and humidified anesthetic gases and eventually prevent hypothermia during general anesthesia. Herein, we describe a case of a BCW-related airway fire.

Locking Multi-Laser Frequencies to a Precision Wavelength Meter: Application to Cold Atoms.

We herein report a simultaneous frequency stabilization of two 780-nm external cavity diode lasers using a precision wavelength meter (WLM). The laser lock performance is characterized by the Allan deviation measurement in which we find σy=10-12 at an averaging time of 1000 s. We also obtain spectral profiles through a heterodyne spectroscopy, identifying the contribution of white and flicker noises to the laser linewidth.

Comparison of efficacy between palonosetron-midazolam combination and palonosetron alone for prevention of postoperative nausea and vomiting in patients undergoing breast surgery and patient controlled analgesia: A prospective, randomized, double-blind study: A CONSORT-compliant study.

Background: Postoperative nausea and vomiting (PONV) is a common complaint in patients following general anesthesia. Various antiemetics, including 5-hydroxytryptamine type 3 (5-HT3) receptor antagonists, are effective but still have limited efficacy. Therefore, combination therapy is preferable to using a single drug alone in high-risk patients.

Foraging trip duration of honeybee increases during a poor air quality episode and the increase persists thereafter.

Increased concentration of airborne particulate matter (PM) in the atmosphere alters the degree of polarization of skylight which is used by honeybees for navigation during their foraging trips. However, little has empirically shown whether poor air quality indeed affects foraging performance (foraging trip duration) of honeybee. Here, we show apparent increases in the average duration of honeybee foraging during and after a heavy air pollution event compared with that of the pre-event period.

The analgesic efficacy of a single injection of ultrasound-guided retrolaminar paravertebral block for breast surgery: a prospective, randomized, double-blinded study.

Background: The thoracic paravertebral block is an effective analgesic technique for postoperative pain management after breast surgery. The ultrasound-guided retrolaminar block (RLB) is a safer alternative to conventional paravertebral block. Thus, we assessed the analgesic efficacy of ultrasound-guided RLB for postoperative pain management after breast surgery.

The effect of combined Epidural-general Anesthesia on Hemodynamic Instability during Pheochromocytoma and Paraganglioma Surgery: A multicenter retrospective cohort study.

The purpose of this study was to compare the effects of combined epidural-general anesthesia with those of general anesthesia alone on hemodynamic instability (intraoperative hypotension and hypertensive crisis) during pheochromocytoma and sympathetic paraganglioma surgery. A total of 119 patients' medical records were reviewed who were diagnosed as having pheochromocytoma and sympathetic paraganglioma on the basis of histological findings. Intraoperative hypotension was defined as a mean blood pressure < 60 mmHg or a decrease > 30% in baseline systolic blood pressure after adrenal vein ligation.

Concealed congenital long QT syndrome during velopharyngeal dysfunction correction: a case report.

The congenital long QT syndrome (LQTS) is an inherited cardiac disorder characterized by increased QT intervals and a tendency to experience ventricular tachycardia, which can cause fainting, heart failure, or sudden death. A 4-year-old female patient undergoing velopharyngeal correction surgery under general anesthesia suddenly developed Torsades de pointes. Although the patient spontaneously resolved to sinus rhythm without treatment, subsequent QT prolongation persisted.

A spatial approach to climate-resilient infrastructure in coastal social-ecological systems: The case of dumbeong in Goseong County, South Korea.

Sustainable landscape planning and management of coastal habitats has become an integral part of the global agenda due to anthroprogenic pressures and climate change-induced events. As an example of human-engineered infrastructure that enhances the sustainability and resilience of coastal social-ecological systems (SES), we have presented the dumbeong system, a farmer-engineered and managed irrigation system based on Korean traditional ecological knowledge. We analyzed the spatial relationship of dumbeongs with coastal landscape attributes and droughts in Goseong County in South Korea.

Oxygen insufflation working channel in a fiberscope is a useful method: A case report and review of literature.

Background: Fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation is the gold standard for endotracheal intubation in difficult or compromised airway situations. However, oxygen insufflation through the working channel of a fiberscope is a controversial method because of the possibility of gastric distention and rupture during an awake fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation, despite the advantages of preventing fogging of the fiberoptic bronchoscopic lens, blowing oral secretions away, and oxygenation of patients.

Case Summary: Here, we describe a case of cervical instability where we rapidly performed fiberoptic bronchoscopic intubation using oxygen insufflation through working channel of the broncoscopy to administer general anesthesia after two previous failures due to low visibility.

A prospective pilotstudy comparing the anesthetic effects of an alpha-2 agonist during holmium laser resection of the prostate and transurethral resection for prostate surgery for benign prostatic hyperplasia patients using selective alpha-1 blockers.

Background: To examine the response to an α2receptor agonist used as a sedative for patients using long-term selective α1 blockers.

Methods: Sixty-nine consecutive patients undergoing transurethral prostate resection or holmium laser resection of the prostateunder spinal anesthesia were divided into two groups; group N (n = 37), which did not receive α1 blockers, and group T (n = 32), which was administered tamsulosin for at least 1 month before the study. Bispectral index scores, Modified Observer's Assessment of Alertness/Sedation scale scores, heart rate, and mean blood pressure were obtained under sedation using dexmedetomidine for 30 min during surgery.

Propofol attenuates osteoclastogenesis by lowering RANKL/OPG ratio in mouse osteoblasts.

Bone remodeling plays an important role in the bone healing process; for example, following fracture. The relative ratio of the receptor activator of nuclear factor kappa B ligand (RANKL)/ osteoprotegerin (OPG) controls osteoclast differentiation, thereby playing a pivotal role in the regulation of bone remodeling. Propofol, a widely used anesthetic agent in orthopedic procedures, is considered to possess potential antioxidant properties owing to its structural similarity to α-tocopherol.
