Bone tumors, characterized by diverse locations and shapes, often necessitate surgical excision followed by custom implant placement to facilitate targeted bone reconstruction. Leveraging additive manufacturing, patient-specific implants can be precisely tailored with complex geometries and desired stiffness, enhancing their suitability for bone ingrowth. In this work, a finite element model is employed to assess patient-specific lattice implants in femur bones.

The association between mental health stigma and face emotion recognition in individuals at risk for psychosis.

Self-stigma has been associated with reduced accuracy of face emotion recognition in individuals at clinical high risk for psychosis (CHR). Stigma may also relate to slowing of performance during cognitive tasks for which a negative stereotype is relevant. This study aimed to investigate the association of mental illness stigma with face emotion recognition among CHR individuals.

Emotional and stigma-related experiences relative to being told one is at risk for psychosis.

Objective: Despite the appeal of early intervention in psychosis, there is concern that identifying youth as having high psychosis risk (PR) may trigger stigma. This study employed a pre-post design to measure change in PR participants' emotions about PR upon being told of their PR status and according to whether this was the first time receiving this information.

Methods: Participants (n = 54) identified as at PR via structured interview rated their emotions about PR before and after being told they were at PR.

Perceptions, Policy, and Partnerships: How Pharmacists Can Be Leaders in Reducing Overprescribing.

Medication overload - or harmful polypharmacy - is a widespread and growing public health issue, impacting millions of older Americans each year. Pharmacists are uniquely positioned to help deprescribe (collaboratively reduce inappropriate medication use), but also face significant obstacles to doing so. This paper explores three ways to involve pharmacists more in deprescribing to mitigate medication overload: Widen public perceptions of pharmacists' role in medication management, change policies that hinder pharmacist involvement in deprescribing, and encourage partnerships between stakeholders across disciplines.

Image-Based Geometrical Characterization of Nodes in Additively Manufactured Lattice Structures.

Additive manufacturing (AM) enables the fabrication of lattice structures with optimal mechanical, fluid, and thermal properties. However, during the AM fabrication process, defects are produced in the strut and node elements, which comprise the lattice structure. This leads to discrepancies between the AM fabricated lattice and its idealized computer-aided design (CAD) model, negatively affecting the ability to predict the mechanical behavior of the fabricated lattice via numerical models.

The 2019-2020 Strategic Engagement Committee was charged with exploring the collaborative relationships colleges and schools have within their state to advance pharmacy practice. Impact of "psychosis risk" identification: Examining predictors of how youth view themselves.

Background: Identifying young people as at clinical high-risk (CHR) for psychosis affords opportunities for intervention to possibly prevent psychosis onset. Yet such CHR identification could plausibly increase stigma. We do not know whether these youth already perceive themselves to be at psychosis-risk (PR) or how their being told they are at PR might impact how they think about themselves.

Early Intervention in Mental Health for Adolescents and Young Adults: A Systematic Review.

Objective: The purpose of this systematic review was to describe the evidence for the effectiveness of early intervention to improve and maintain performance in occupations for youths with or at risk for serious mental illness (SMI).

Method: Titles and abstracts of 670 articles were reviewed, 234 were retrieved for full review, and 30 met inclusion criteria.

Results: Moderate to strong evidence supports cognitive remediation (CR) and mixed evidence supports cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) as an adjunct modality to improve general functioning.

Milestones to the Discovery of T-type Calcium Channel Blockers for the Treatment of Generalized Epilepsies.

We describe the discovery and optimization of new, brain-penetrant T-type calcium channel blockers. We present optimized compounds with excellent efficacy in a rodent model of generalized absence-like epilepsy. Along the fine optimization of a chemical series with a pharmacological target located in the CNS (target potency, brain penetration, and solubility), we successfully identified an Ames negative aminopyrazole as putative metabolite of this compound series.

Sensory characteristics of youth at clinical high risk for psychosis.

Aim: To identify and compare the sensory characteristics of young people at clinical high risk (CHR) for psychosis to those of peers at clinical low risk (CLR), and to national normative data. CHR and CLR participants were recruited from 6 US regions.

Method: A descriptive cohort design was used to analyse baseline data collected as part of the Early Detection and Intervention for the Prevention of Psychosis Program (EDIPPP).

Massive Transfusion Protocol Simulation: An Innovative Approach to Team Training.

At a 72-bed pediatric facility, a multidisciplinary team approach was used to prepare for the expansion of services for patients requiring spinal fusion. This preparation included emergency response requiring massive transfusion, necessitating the need for a Massive Transfusion Protocol (MTP) process to be in place. Such instances are low volume/high risk, creating difficulty for staff to gain and maintain proficiency with the equipment and processes related to the MTP in a secure environment.

Objectives: To describe Washington State's successful legal and legislative efforts to gain pharmacist medical provider status and major medical compensation and to compare those efforts with similar efforts in other states to identify key lessons learned.

Summary: Washington State Engrossed Substitute Senate Bill 5557 was enacted in 2015, securing pharmacists as medical providers and requiring compensation under major medical insurance for pharmacists providing health services (Revised Code of Washington 48.43.

Preparation, Antiepileptic Activity, and Cardiovascular Safety of Dihydropyrazoles as Brain-Penetrant T-Type Calcium Channel Blockers.

A series of dihydropyrazole derivatives was developed as potent, selective, and brain-penetrating T-type calcium channel blockers. An optimized derivative, compound 6c, was advanced to in vivo studies, where it demonstrated efficacy in the WAG/Rij rat model of generalized nonconvulsive, absence-like epilepsy. Compound 6c was not efficacious in the basolateral amygdala kindling rat model of temporal lobe epilepsy, and it led to prolongation of the PR interval in ECG recordings in rodents.

Implications of employer coverage of contraception: Cost-effectiveness analysis of contraception coverage under an employer mandate.

Objectives: Mandatory employer-based insurance coverage of contraception in the US has been a controversial component of the Affordable Care Act (ACA). Prior research has examined the cost-effectiveness of contraception in general; however, no studies have developed a formal decision model in the context of the new ACA provisions. As such, this study aims to estimate the relative cost-effectiveness of insurance coverage of contraception under employer-sponsored insurance coverage taking into consideration newer regulations allowing for religious exemptions.

Oral health in patients taking psychotropic medications: Results from a pharmacy-based pilot study.

Objectives: Individuals with mental illness face an increased risk of oral disease compared with those without mental illness. The goals of this study were to examine the self-reported oral health and dental access of individuals filling psychotropic medication prescriptions and to determine whether pharmacy patients would choose to speak with a pharmacist about their oral health if given the option to do so.

Design: Pharmacists across 6 community pharmacies within a local chain identified and surveyed adult patients filling prescriptions for psychotropic medications.

Archaic RDA Methodology for Vitamin C.

Frei et al's 2012 review entitled "Authors' Perspective: What is the Optimum Intake of Vitamin C in Humans" is both flawed and misleading. RCTs are ill suited to determining the RDA, it is debatable that there is sufficient scientific evidence to determine the optimum intake of vitamin C in humans, observations regarding high-doses of ascorbate have been ignored, and there are inaccuracies of fact with respect to the saturation of blood plasma following low dose intake. Until the limitations of current knowledge are recognised it is unwise to set limits on the dose.

Specialized delivery room planning for fetuses with critical congenital heart disease.

Improvements in fetal echocardiography have increased recognition of fetuses with congenital heart disease (CHD) that require specialized delivery room (DR) care. In this study, care protocols for these low-volume and high-risk deliveries were created. Elements included (1) diagnosis-specific DR care plans and algorithms, (2) a multidisciplinary team with expertise, (3) simulation, (4) checklists, and (5) debriefing.

Recent developments in family psychoeducation as an evidence-based practice.

Among potential resources for people with serious mental illnesses (SMI) and their families, professionally delivered family psychoeducation (FPE) is designed to engage, inform, and educate family members, so that they can assist the person with SMI in managing their illness. In this article, we review research regarding FPE outcomes and implementation since 2001, updating the previous review in this journal (McFarlane, Dixon, Lukens, & Lucksted, Journal of Marital and Family Therapy 2003; 29, 223). Research on a range of FPE variations continues to return mostly positive effects for adults with schizophrenia and increasingly, bipolar disorder.
