Background: Metabolomic profiles may influence colorectal cancer (CRC) development. Few studies have performed pre-diagnostic metabolome-wide analyses with CRC risk.

Methods: We conducted a nested case-control study among women (Nurses' Health Study (NHS)) and men (Health Professionals Follow-up Study (HPFS)) who provided blood between 1989 and 1995.

Optimizing single-cell RNA sequencing methods for human colon biopsies: droplet-based vs. picowell-based platforms.

Background & Aims: Single-cell RNA sequencing (scRNA) has empowered many insights into gastrointestinal microenvironments. However, profiling human biopsies using droplet-based scRNA (D-scRNA) is challenging since it requires immediate processing to minimize epithelial cell damage. In contrast, picowell-based (P-scRNA) platforms permit short-term frozen storage before sequencing.

Development and Validation of a Composite Skin Quality Scale.

Background: The increasing demand for skin quality interventions in aesthetic medicine underscores the necessity for objective, evidence-based assessment tools that may be used to evaluate novel interventions or devices.

Objectives: To develop and validate a 5-point photonumeric rating scale for assessing overall skin quality, including radiance, color evenness, and smoothness.

Methods: The IBSA (Institut Biochimique SA) Composite Skin Quality Scale was developed and underwent live validation with 88 real-world patients, chosen to encompass a broad spectrum of skin qualities and Fitzpatrick skin types.

Patients' and Caregivers' Suggestions for Improving Assisted Dying Regulation: A Qualitative Study in Australia and Canada.

Introduction: Assisted dying (AD) has been legalised in a small but growing number of jurisdictions globally, including Canada and Australia. Early research in both countries demonstrates that, in response to access barriers, patients and caregivers take action to influence their individual experience of AD, as well as AD systems more widely. This study analyses how patients and caregivers suggest other decision-makers in AD systems should address identified issues.

'My Advocacy is Not About Me, My Advocacy is About Canadians': A Qualitative Study of how Caregivers and Patients Influence Regulation of Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada.

Medical assistance in dying (MAiD) was legalised federally in Canada after the Supreme Court decision in Carter v Canada (Attorney General) [2015] 1 SCR 331. The federal legislative framework for MAiD was established via Bill C-14 in 2016. Caregivers and patients were central to Carter and subsequent litigation and advocacy, which resulted in amendments to the law via Bill C-7 in 2021.

Practitioners' experiences with 2021 amendments to Canada's medical assistance in dying law: a qualitative analysis.

Background: In 2016, Canada joined the growing number of jurisdictions to legalize medical assistance in dying (MAiD), when the Supreme Court of Canada's decision in took effect and the Canadian Parliament passed Bill C-14. Five years later, Bill C-7 introduced several significant amendments. These included removing the 'reasonably foreseeable natural death' requirement (an aspect that was widely debated) and introducing the final consent waiver.

Long term survival following a medical emergency team call at an Australian regional hospital.

To investigate the long term survival of medical emergency team (MET) patients at an Australian regional hospital and describe associated patient and MET call characteristics. Retrospective cohort study. Data linkage to the statewide death registry was performed to allow for long term survival analysis, including multivariable Cox proportional hazards regression and production of Kaplan-Meier survival curves.

A qualitative study of experiences of institutional objection to medical assistance in dying in Canada: ongoing challenges and catalysts for change.

Background: In June 2016, Canada legalized medical assistance in dying (MAiD). From the outset, some healthcare institutions (including faith-based and non-faith-based hospitals, hospices, and residential aged care facilities) have refused to allow aspects of MAiD onsite, resulting in patient transfers for MAiD assessments and provision. There have been media reports highlighting the negative consequences of these "institutional objections", however, very little research has examined their nature and impact.

Paediatric palliative medicine (PPM) is a holistic approach to care for children and their families. Services are growing and developing worldwide but significant disparity in service provision remains. The Paediatric Supportive and Palliative Care Team (PSPCT) at the Royal Hospital for Children in Glasgow was established in 2019, but there is still no clear integrated role within the paediatric intensive care unit (PICU) at present.

Assessing Implicit Bias in Dermatology.

Background: Patients with skin of color (SOC), defined as Fitzpatrick skin types IV to VI, and of varying ethnicities are under-represented in dermatology. This includes practitioners, trainees, dermatologic teaching materials, and clinical studies.  Methods: Online survey study to assess dermatologists’ perceptions that could impact patient care.

Symbiotic interactions between rhizobia and legumes result in the formation of root nodules, which fix nitrogen that can be used for plant growth. Rhizobia usually invade legume roots through a plant-made tunnel-like structure called an infection thread (IT). RPG (Rhizobium-directed polar growth) encodes a coiled-coil protein that has been identified in Medicago truncatula as required for root nodule infection, but the function of RPG remains poorly understood.

Nitrogen fixation requires the endosymbionts to differentiate into bacteroids which can be reversible or terminal. The latter is controlled by the plant, it is more beneficial and has evolved in multiple clades of the Leguminosae family.

From Prohibition to Permission: The Winding Road of Medical Assistance in Dying in Canada.

In this paper, I offer a personal and professional narrative of how Canada went from prohibition to permission for medical assistance in dying (MAiD). I describe the legal developments to date and flag what might be coming in the near future. I also offer some personal observations and reflections on the role and impact of bioethics and bioethicists, on what it was like to be a participant in Canada's law reform process, and on lessons that readers in other jurisdictions might take from Canada's experience.

An Open-Label Study Evaluating the Periorbital Skin Rejuvenation Efficacy of a Cosmeceutical Containing Methyl Estradiolpropanoate (MEP) in Women With Estrogen Deficient Skin (EDS).

Background: A cosmeceutical topical formulation containing a non-hormonal estrogen receptor activator, Methyl Estradiolpropanoate (MEP), has been developed to address periorbital skin aging in post-menopausal women with estrogen-deficient skin (EDS).

Objective: The primary objective of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of Emepelle Eye Cream® (Biopelle, Ferndale Pharma Group, Ferndale, MI, USA) for the rejuvenation of the periorbital skin areas in women EDS. The secondary objectives were to assess the tolerability and satisfaction with Emepelle Eye Cream as assessed by the clinical investigator and the participants.

Diversity in Academic Dermatology.

The American Medical Association recently declared racism to be a public health threat. It declared that “Racism negatively impacts and exacerbates the health inequities among historically marginalized communities”.1 The New England Journal of Medicine echoed this declaration in a recent article that included goals for making medicine more diverse by transforming “the ranks of institutional research leadership, faculty, trainees, and staff to reflect the demographic diversity of the communities their organizations serve.

Scientific articles contain a wealth of information about experimental methods and results describing biological designs. Due to its unstructured nature and multiple sources of ambiguity and variability, extracting this information from text is a difficult task. In this paper, we describe the development of the synthetic biology knowledge system (SBKS) text processing pipeline.
