Purposes: The purposes of this study were to report the presentation and management of an acquired total anterior staphyloma that resulted from a fungal corneal ulcer and to discuss its pathogenesis.

Methods: Observational case report. Clinical observation and surgical intervention of a patient who developed a total anterior staphyloma after a partially treated fungal corneal ulcer.

Purpose: To present a case of infectious keratitis occurring 6 years after LASIK due to the rare human pathogen Shewanella putrefaciens.

Methods: A 58-year-old man presented with redness and pain in the right eye 6 years following LASIK retreatment. Examination revealed a corneal infiltrate at the flap interface.

Science and strategy for preventing and managing corneal ulceration.

ABSTRACT Corneal ulcers can cause significant loss of vision from scarring and astigmatism, but rapid management can limit the destruction and improve outcomes. Infectious ulcers usually resolve with antimicrobial treatment. Noninfectious ulcers, however, present a diagnostic and therapeutic challenge.

Effects of n-hexadecane and PM-100 clay on trichloroethylene degradation by Burkholderia cepacia.

Trichloroethylene (TCE) is a non-flammable, volatile organochlorine compound which was a widely used degreasing agent, anesthetic, and coolant prior to 1960, but has since been placed on the Environmental Protection Agency's (EPA) list of priority pollutants. The inadequate disposal practices for TCE have created numerous TCE-contaminated superfund sites. The most commonly employed practice for remediating TCE-contaminated sites is to purge the contaminant from the source and trap it onto an adsorbent which is disposed of in a landfill or by incineration.

Comparative replication of HSV-1 in BALB/c and C57BL/6 mouse embryo fibroblasts in vitro.

Herpes simplex virus type 1 (HSV)-host cell interactions were studied in fibroblasts from inbred mice by measuring virus replication, virus adsorption, infectious center formation, and single-cell virus production. BALB/c mouse embryo fibroblasts (MEF) produced more intracellular and extracellular virus than C57BL/6 MEF, with differences in virus production first appearing at 16 hr after inoculation. Virus yield in C57BL/6 cells peaked earlier (16 hr) and at a lower level than in BALB/c cells (20 hr).

Spread of HSV and establishment of latency after corneal infection in inbred mice.

The spread of herpes simplex virus (HSV) through neural tissues was studied in three inbred mouse strains that differ in susceptibility to HSV stromal keratitis. The left eyes of BALB/c, C57BL/6, and DBA/2 mice were inoculated topically with HSV type 1. The optic and trigeminal nerves, trigeminal ganglia, and eyes were assayed for infectious virus on days 1, 2, 3, 4, 7, 9, 11 and 14 after inoculation.

Rescue of BKV from BKV-transformed hamster, rat, and mouse cells: correlation with levels of nonintegrated viral DNA.

Infectious BKV was rescued from 39 of 40 lines of virus-free, BKV-transformed hamster, rat, and mouse cells, which had been either maintained continuously in culture or reestablished in culture after one or more passage in the appropriate host, by Sendai virus-catalyzed fusion with permissive cells. Striking differences were observed among the 39 lines with respect to the efficiency of virus rescue. Fourteen of the lines were examined for the presence of nonintegrated viral DNA by dot-blot hybridization.

Isolation and characterization of BK virus-transformed rat and mouse cells.

The isolation and characterization of four groups of BK virus (BKV)-transformed rat embryo fibroblast (RE) and mouse kidney (MK) cells are described. They consist of (1) seven RE lines transformed with a BKV pool containing a high proportion of defective virions, and (2) 16 RE, (3) 14 Balb/c-MK and (4) 2 Swiss ICR-MK lines, all transformed, at different input multiplicities, with a pool of BKV free of defective virions. None of the lines produces BKV, all contain BKV T antigen and all grow to higher saturation densities and have higher plating efficiencies than do the corresponding control cells.

Observations on the growth and plaque assay of BK virus in cultured human and monkey cells.

Although human embryo kidney (HEK), muscle (HEM) and lung (HEL) cells are capable of supporting the replication of BK virus (BKV) through passage levels 9, 12 and 12 respectively, only third, fourth and fifth passage level HEK cells were found to be satisfactory for the plaque assay of the virus. BSC-I and VERO cells can also be used for the plaque assay of BKV. However, in HEK cells plaques can be visualized in 20 days (compared to 28 days in BSC-I cells), and since in VERO cells the plaques are poorly defined and the titre about I log10 lower than in either HEK or BSC-I cells, HEK cells were the ones chosen for use.

Fate of labeled hydroxamates during iron transport from hydroxamate-ion chelates.

The fate of the hydroxamic acid-iron transport cofactors during iron uptake from the (59)Fe(3+) chelates of the (3)H-labeled hydroxamates schizokinen and aerobactin was studied by assay of simultaneous incorporation of both (59)Fe(3+) and (3)H. Protein kinase activity in equine herpesvirus.

A protein kinase which is intimately associated with equine herpesvirus (equine abortion virus) was found by using adenosine triphosphate-gamma-(32)P as a phosphate donor and virus protein as an acceptor. Consistent demonstration of the activity requires prior removal of phosphohydrolase. The kinase activity requires Mg(2+), is not stimulated by cyclic adenosine monophosphate, but is enhanced by added protamine or arginine-rich histone.

Repression of phenolic acid-synthesizing enzymes and its relation to iron uptake in Bacillus subtilis.
