Parathyroid surgery can be safely performed in a community hospital by experienced parathyroid surgeons: A retrospective cohort study.

Background: There is ongoing debate about the effectiveness and safety of performing parathyroid surgery in low-volume community hospitals.

Study Design/methods: Cases performed at community hospital by a group of 4 parathyroid surgeons (group 1) were reviewed. Cure and complication rates were analyzed in light of outcomes of an expert endocrine surgeon from high-volume academic center (group 2) as point of reference.

The fate of the tumor remnant after less-than-complete acoustic neuroma resection.

Objectives: We sought to determine the recurrence rate after near-total and subtotal resection of acoustic neuroma.

Study Design, Setting, And Patients: We conducted a retrospective chart review of a total of 79 patients: 50 with near-total resections (remnant < or =25 mm(2) and < or =2 mm thick) and 29 with subtotal resections (any larger remnant). Surgical approach included 5 middle fossa, 17 retrosigmoid, and 57 translabyrinthine.

Scarless lip rehabilitation for the adynamic lip.

Objective: Paralysis of the marginal mandibular branch of the facial nerve can be a debilitating condition resulting in compromised speech and oral incompetence. We describe a static procedure performed to address the functional and cosmetic deficits seen with an adynamic lip.

Methods: Three patients with complete facial nerve paralysis were evaluated after the scarless lip rehabilitation, a modification of the traditional wedge resection of the lower lip.
