Article Synopsis
  • The apartheid era in South Africa saw serious human rights violations against the Black population, leading to distrust towards scientific research involving Black participants.
  • This study aimed to explore the concept of voluntariness in medical research participation and assess racial differences in perceptions of voluntariness among 111 sampled employees from different racial backgrounds.
  • Results indicated that Black participants perceived their voluntariness to be significantly lower than that of Indian and White participants, but this perception did not affect their willingness to engage in future research.
