Chronic kidney disease (CKD) and acute kidney injury (AKI) are global health problems that affect over 850 million people, twice the number of diabetic individuals around the world. Diabetes mellitus (DM) is known to increase the susceptibility to AKI. Plants and foods, such as curcumin, are traditionally used as treatments for various diseases due to its wide range of bioactive compounds that exert antioxidative, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and anticancer properties.

Objective: To evaluate the effect of curcumin on renal function, hemodynamics, and renal oxidative profile of rats with chronic kidney disease (CKD) subjected to renal ischemia-reperfusion injury (IRI).

Methods: Wistar rats, 250-300 g, distributed in four groups: Sham (n = 5), CKD simulation; CKD (n = 5), 5/6 renal ablation for CKD induction; CKD + IRI (n = 5), CKD and renal pedicle clamping for 30 minutes; and CKD + IRI+curcumin (n = 5), CKD + IRI, curcumin administration 30 mg/kg/day, orally, for 10 days. Renal function (inulin clearance, urine flow, plasma creatinine), hemodynamics (blood pressure), and oxidative profile (peroxides, TBARS, and urine nitrate, non-protein soluble thiols in renal tissue) were evaluated.

Background: Iodinated contrast (IC) is a leading cause of hospital-based acute kidney injury (AKI). Contrast-induced acute kidney injury (CI-AKI) is a decline in renal function due to iodinated contrast administration and occurs more frequently in individuals with increasingly common risk factors, such as diabetes mellitus (DM). Physical training (PT) can have renoprotective effects on CI-AKI in diabetic nephropathy.
