Commercially produced phantoms are available, but there are "homemade" alternatives such as raw poultry and gelatin molds. Precooked, processed meat, better known as SPAM (Hormel Foods Corporation, Austin, MN), can be used as an ultrasound phantom to teach several ultrasound applications.

Gastrolithiasis was diagnosed in nine prehensile-tailed (PT) porcupines (Coendou prehensilis) housed at six zoologic institutions in the United States and Canada. Affected animals were either asymptomatic or had clinical signs, including weight loss, diarrhea, and depression. Abdominal palpation was adequate for diagnosis in all six antemortem cases, and radiographs confirmed a soft tissue density mass effect produced by the concretion.

Article Synopsis
  • Milk contains important proteins, including immunoglobulins, that support newborns' digestion, but our understanding of these proteins is still limited.
  • A new ion-exchange fractionation method revealed 293 unique proteins in bovine whey, with 176 being newly identified.
  • The study found differences in the protein composition of colostrum and mature milk, suggesting colostrum may offer enhanced defenses for newborns, indicating potential health benefits from cow's milk proteins similar to those in human milk.

Background: Drug abuse is a frequent factor in emergency department (ED) visits. Although commonly performed, qualitative testing of urine for drugs of abuse (u-DOA) is inherently limited in its ability to establish the identity, timing or dose of substances used. Previous studies have demonstrated these limitations, but their designs cannot be used to determine whether the results of u-DOA tests affect physicians' patient care decisions.
