Curtobacterium sp. strain WW7 is a Gram-positive, non-motile, orange rod-shaped bacterium isolated from branches of wild willow (Salix sitchensis) trees. The WW7 strain has optimum growth in the temperature range between 25 and 30 °C, a pH range of 6-7.

Purpose: To compare the effectiveness and safety of the MicroShunt (Santen Inc) versus trabeculectomy in patients with primary open-angle glaucoma (POAG).

Design: Prospective, randomized, multicenter trial conducted in the United States and Europe.

Participants: Adult patients (aged 40-85 years) with mild to severe POAG inadequately controlled on maximum tolerated medical therapy and intraocular pressure (IOP) ≥ 15 mmHg and ≤ 40 mmHg.

This study performed statistical analyses to identify likely crash contributing factors for Head-on Fatal and Serious Injury (FSI) collisions involving heavy vehicles (HVs) on the Queensland state road network. Head-on HV collisions are associated with the largest number of fatalities compared to other crash types in Queensland. However, there is limited relevant literature regarding this type of crashes.

False tooth extraction (FTE), a cultural practice in East Africa used to treat fever and diarrhea in infants, has been thought to increase infant mortality. The mortality of clinically similar infants with and without false tooth extraction has not previously been examined. The objective of our retrospective cohort study was to examine the mortality, clinical presentation, and treatment of infants with and without false tooth extraction.

Establishing and maintaining social connectivity: An understanding of the lived experiences of older adults residing in regional and rural communities.

Objective: To better understand how to plan for an ageing demographic that resides in ever-changing community typologies.

Design: Semi-structured in-depth interviews.

Measles outbreak associated with adopted children from China--Missouri, Minnesota, and Washington, July 2013.

On July 5, 2013, CDC was notified of two cases of laboratory-confirmed measles in recently adopted children from an orphanage in Henan Province, China. To find potentially exposed persons, CDC collaborated with state and local health departments, the children's adoption agency, and airlines that carried the adoptees. Two additional measles cases were identified, one in a family member of an adoptee and one in a third adopted child from China.

Objectives: Overweight children are at increased risk for many medical problems. Trauma is the leading etiology of childhood morbidity and mortality. No previous study has evaluated the association between overweight and acute ankle injuries in children.

A randomized trial to assess the efficacy of point-of-care testing in decreasing length of stay in a pediatric emergency department.

Objectives: To compare the effect of point-of-care (POC) testing versus traditional laboratory methods on length of stay in a pediatric emergency department (ED).

Methods: This study was a prospective, randomized, controlled trial of patients solely requiring blood work that a POC device was capable of performing. Two hundred twenty-five patients presenting to a tertiary hospital ED in an urban setting enrolled after informed consent.

Novel applications of ultrasound in pediatric emergency medicine.

A new field, termed emergency ultrasound (EUS), has recently been established. The past decade saw rapid development in the field of EUS in adult patients, especially as performed by emergency medicine physicians. Ultrasound imaging offers several advantages over traditional radiographic techniques, many of which are especially relevant to patients in the pediatric emergency department.

Incidence and predictors of serious bacterial infections among 57- to 180-day-old infants.

Background: Numerous researchers have investigated fever in infants <2 months of age. However, the etiology of fever and usefulness of screening tests in older (2-6 months) infants is not well studied.

Methods: This was a prospective study of febrile infants 57-180 days old.

Fever in the new millennium: a review of recent studies of markers of serious bacterial infection in febrile children.

Purpose Of Review: Evaluation of a febrile infant or child for serious bacterial infections (SBI) can be a challenging task; there is no single reliable predictor of SBI in infants. This review examines some of the recent work evaluating the usefulness of indicators for SBI, such as white blood cell count (WBC), C-reactive protein (CRP), procalcitonin (PCT), and interleukin-6 (IL-6).

Recent Findings: While WBC is traditionally used as an indicator of serious infection, it appears to be the least specific and sensitive test in children.

Arabidopsis CYP86A2 represses Pseudomonas syringae type III genes and is required for cuticle development.

Pseudomonas syringae relies on type III secretion system to deliver effector proteins into the host cell for parasitism. Type III genes are induced in planta, but host factors affecting the induction are poorly understood. Here we report on the identification of an Arabidopsis mutant, att1 (for aberrant induction of type three genes), that greatly enhances the expression of bacterial type III genes avrPto and hrpL.

Emergency medicine training programs' educational requirements in the management of psychiatric emergencies: current perspective.

Objective: The purpose of this study was to determine the extent of training in clinical psychiatry that is provided and/or required by emergency medicine (EM) residency training programs and pediatric emergency medicine (PEM) subspecialty residency training programs.

Design/methods: A questionnaire was mailed to 114 EM residency directors and to all 50 PEM fellowship directors. Each director was asked to indicate the amount of psychiatric training that was required of residents or fellows in his or her program.

Management of fever in infants and children.

There is no question that fever is a source of great consternation for parent and physician alike; however, it is impossible to predict with certainty the outcome of every febrile illness. Inherent in the words diagnostic impression is a degree of uncertainty. The only question remaining is how much uncertainty is in the best interest of the child.

Response of Woody Plant Communities in Power-Line Corridors to Frequent Anthropogenic Disturbance.

Ecological theory predicts that diversity should decline as disturbance frequency increases beyond an intermediate level. However, few data exist on the responses of deciduous forests to high-frequency disturbance. We compared regenerating woody plant communities in northern Kentucky power-line corridors to adjacent second-growth forests to determine if high-frequency disturbance (5-6 yr mechanical or manual cutting cycle) modifies forest development.
