Peptide-based hydrogels form a kind of promising material broadly used in biomedicine and biotechnology. However, the correlation between their hydrogen bonding dynamics and mechanical properties remains uncertain. In this study, we found that the adoption of β-sheet and α-helix secondary structures by ECF-5 and GFF-5 peptides, respectively, could further form fiber networks to immobilize water molecules into hydrogels.

Introduction: Sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy is a common complication of sepsis and is associated with higher mortality. To date, effective diagnostic and management strategies are still lacking. Recent studies suggest that ferroptosis plays a critical role in sepsis-induced cardiomyopathy and ferroptosis inhibitor Ferrostatin-1 (Fer-1) improved cardiac dysfunction and survival in lipopolysaccharide (LPS) induced endotoxemia.

Protein kinases are key components of multiple cell signaling pathways. Several receptor-like cytoplasmic kinases (RLCKs) have demonstrated roles in immune and developmental signaling across various plant species, making them of interest in the study of phosphorylation-based signal relay. Here, we present our investigation of a subgroup of RLCKs in Arabidopsis thaliana.

Anal fistula is a common disease with recurrent inflammation and accumulated exudate. Traditional treatments often fail to effectively eliminate inflammation and ensure adequate drainage, leading to prolonged healing time and a high recurrence rate. Herein, a new class of quaternized molecular brush-grafted injectable microgel (denoted as GAA@CNT-g-PVBTMA) is developed through thermal polymerization and mechanical fragmentation to promote the healing process of anal fistula.

Background: Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) is one of the most aggressive diseases and has remarkably high mortality rates. In recent years, altered metabolism has been shown to contribute to the maintenance of pancreatic cancer malignancies. However, the molecular mechanism underlying glucose metabolism reprogramming remains elusive.

Efficient magnesium-lithium separation is a critical step in extracting lithium ions from salt lakes brine. Precipitation of Mg from liquid to solid is the simplest separation method, but a side reaction of Li adsorption by precipitated floc leads to incomplete Mg/Li separation and lithium loss. In this study, we grafted phosphorus atomic sites onto silica-based nuclei with self-floating separation capability to prepare adsorbents with specific capture ability for Mg, achieving efficient Mg/Li separation from brine.

This paper establishes a finite element model that includes the interface roughness characteristics to evaluate the stress concentration in the atmospheric plasma sprayed (APS) thermal barrier coatings (TBCs) with an uneven temperature field. We further scrutinize the effects of crack initiation at the interface between the thermally grown oxide (TGO) and the bond coat (BC) and in the ceramic top-coat (TC) on stress redistribution by introducing the debonding model for crack analysis. Results indicate that the interfacial residual stress σ achieves the critical value at the end of the cooling stage.

  • Post-intensive care syndrome (PICS) affects ICU survivors, causing psychological, cognitive, and physical issues, but research specifically on surgical ICU patients is limited.
  • This study followed 83 surgical ICU patients from a Chinese hospital to assess the incidence and risk factors of PICS within six months of discharge, using various health surveys to evaluate their conditions.
  • Results revealed a high incidence of PICS, with 78.3% of patients developing some form of dysfunction, showing prevalence rates of 55.4% and 27.7% at three and six months post-discharge, respectively.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is one of the most common age-related neurodegenerative diseases and the most devastating form of senile dementia. It has a complex mechanism and no effective treatment. Exploring the pathogenesis of AD and providing ideas for treatment can effectively improve the prognosis of AD.

  • - This study assessed how cataract surgery affects the corneal endothelium and central corneal thickness (CCT) in children, comparing results to a control group.
  • - Results showed that after surgery, children with bilateral cataracts had a decrease in endothelial cell density (CD) and increases in average cell area (AVE) and CCT, while similar changes were observed in the unilateral cataract group.
  • - The study also found that more corneal sutures and smaller pupil diameters correlated with worse corneal health outcomes in the unilateral cataract group.

Objective: Radiomics models have demonstrated good performance for the diagnosis and evaluation of prostate cancer (PCa). However, there are currently no validated imaging models that can predict PCa or clinically significant prostate cancer (csPCa). Therefore, we aimed to identify the best such models for the prediction of PCa and csPCa.

Microplastics (MPs) are widely detected in the soil of the Qinghai-Tibet Plateau with increasing economic activities. However, studies concerning the driving factors affecting the presence of these surface soil MPs for the typical regions with different geographic conditions are still lacking. Here we chose three representative regions (Ali, Yushu, and Haixi) from east to west across the plateau to investigate the distribution and further explore the contributing factors of surface soil MPs.

Article Synopsis
  • The rotary motor is essential for motion execution, but an issue with eccentricity between the encoder grating and motor shaft can lead to measurement inaccuracies.
  • To solve this, a new automated mounting system was proposed, using a near-sensor detector and push rod to calculate eccentricity in real-time while improving speed and accuracy.
  • The system achieves a mounting task in about 25.1 seconds and can calculate eccentricity within 2.8 seconds, resulting in an average eccentricity of just 3.8 µm after installation.

Thermal-responsive hydrogels are developed as ion-conductive switchs for energy storage devices, however, the molecule mechanism of switch on/off remains unclear. Here, poly(N-isopropylacrylamide-co-acrylamide) hydrogel is synthesized as a model material and nanodiamond (ND) based quantum sensing for phase change study is developed. First, micro-scale phase separation with cross-linked mesh structure after sol-gel transition is visualized in situ and water molecules are trapped by polymer chains and on a chemically "frozen" state.

Alzheimer's disease (AD) is a degenerative dementia illness that causes atrophy of the temporal and frontal lobes of the cerebral cortex. Linggui Zhugan (LGZG), a classic Chinese herbal formula, was initially recognized as a safe and effective treatment of cardiovascular diseases for long history. This study intended to assess the effects and the molecular mechanism of LGZG on AD progress.

Moiré superlattices, composed of two layers of transition metal dichalcogenides with a relative twist angle, provide a novel platform for exploring the correlated electronic phases and excitonic physics. Here, a gas-flow perturbation chemical vapor deposition (CVD) approach is demonstrated to directly grow MoS bilayer with versatile twist angles. It is found that the formation of twisted bilayer MoS homostructures sensitively depends on the gas-flow perturbation modes, correspondingly featuring the nucleation sites of the second layer at the same (homo-site) as or at the different (hetero-site) from that of the first layer.

The spiking convolutional neural network (SCNN) is a kind of spiking neural network (SNN) with high accuracy for visual tasks and power efficiency on neuromorphic hardware, which is attractive for edge applications. However, it is challenging to implement SCNNs on resource-constrained edge devices because of the large number of convolutional operations and membrane potential (Vm) storage needed. Previous works have focused on timestep reduction, network pruning, and network quantization to realize SCNN implementation on edge devices.
