Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates the "smoker's paradox," where smoking patients with ST segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) appear to have better outcomes compared to non-smokers after treatment.
  • Out of 2,546 STEMI patients, 1,007 (41%) were current smokers, who were generally younger and experienced significantly lower in-hospital and 1-year mortality rates.
  • The findings suggest that while younger age may partly explain the better outcomes for smokers, smoking habits still independently contribute to reduced mortality after percutaneous coronary intervention (PCI).

Article Synopsis
  • Previous research has suggested that spirituality and religiosity might affect health and mental health, prompting this study to explore their relationship with cocaine use.
  • A systematic review analyzed twenty observational studies, of which fifteen indicated that higher levels of religiosity corresponded with lower cocaine use among both adults and adolescents.
  • Despite these findings, some studies showed mixed results or associations in specific groups; thus, further longitudinal research is needed to confirm these relationships and strengthen preventive approaches centered around religious involvement for youth.

A number of studies have indicated that the mitotic rate may be a predictive factor for poor prognosis in melanoma patients. The aim of this study was to investigate whether the mitotic rate is associated with other prognostic clinical and anatomopathological characteristics. After adjusting for other anatomopathological characteristics, we then verified the prognostic value of the number of mitoses, determining in which population subgroup this variable may have greater prognostic significance on 3-year mortality.

Transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) is a less invasive alternative to surgical implantation and its implementation is progressively increasing worldwide. We routinely perform pre-procedural aortic angiography CT to assess aortic dimensions and vascular anatomy. This study aims to evaluate the image quality of CTA for TAVI planning using dual-layer spectral CT, with virtual monoenergetic image reconstructions at 40 keV.

Article Synopsis
  • The study aims to investigate whether orodispersible tablet (ODT) ticagrelor can effectively inhibit platelet aggregation in acute coronary syndrome (ACS) patients who are also receiving morphine, comparing it to the standard coated tablet form.
  • A total of 130 ACS patients were randomly assigned to receive either ODT or standard ticagrelor loading doses, with assessments made regarding platelet reactivity after treatment, particularly looking for any interaction effects with morphine.
  • The results showed that while morphine-treated patients had higher platelet reactivity one hour after the loading dose, there were no significant differences in platelet reactivity between the ODT and standard ticagrelor groups, nor were there significant differences in adverse events related to

A 44-year-old woman with obstetric antiphospholipid syndrome (APS) presented to our institution with suspected non ST-elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI). Shortly after coronary angiography, she developed diplopia, hypotension and chest pain with inferior ST elevation in 12-lead ECG. According to multidisciplinary evaluation, she promptly underwent systemic thrombolysis, with clinical and haemodynamic improvement.

Background: Despite the key pathophysiological role of inflammation in the development of coronary artery disease (CAD), the evaluation of inflammatory status has not been clearly established in patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS). The aim of this study is to evaluate the prevalence of CRP-independent inflammatory patterns in patients referred for primary percutaneous coronary intervention (pPCI) and to determine their one-year relationship with adverse clinical outcomes.

Methods: We carried out a single-centre, observational study consecutively enrolling all patients presenting at a large-volume PCI hub with a diagnosis of ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and treated with pPCI.

  • A 56-year-old man with no symptoms had an Implantable Cardioverter-Defibrillator (ICD) put in due to a Brugada pattern on his ECG and a family history of sudden cardiac death.
  • Seventeen years later, he was hospitalized for heart palpitations, which were found to be caused by atrial flutter.
  • During the hospitalization, an echocardiogram unexpectedly showed that he had developed hypertrophic cardiomyopathy.

Article Synopsis
  • The study investigates how body mass index (BMI) affects platelet reactivity in patients with ST-Elevation Myocardial Infarction (STEMI) who are treated with oral 3rd generation P2Y inhibitors.
  • It involved 429 STEMI patients, dividing them based on BMI (<25 vs ≥25 kg/m) and using a method to balance their baseline characteristics, followed by multiple assessments of platelet reactivity at various times post-treatment.
  • The results showed that patients with a BMI of 25 or higher had higher platelet reactivity shortly after treatment and were more likely to experience high platelet reactivity, indicating that higher BMI may delay the response to these medications in the short term.

Acute stent thrombosis is a rare event. When it occurs, procedure- and patient-related factors need to be assessed. First, our case showed that wiring was only successful with a chronic total occlusion-derived technique, indirectly demonstrating a stent-related problem.

Background: Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) is a Gram-positive bacterium that synthesizes specific protein toxins, which can be exploited for control of various insect pests, including Diatraea saccharalis, a lepidopteran that severely damages sugarcane crops. Although studies have described the effects of Bt in the larval phases of D. saccharalis, few have examined its effect on insect eggs.

Global warming may impact biodiversity by disrupting biological interactions, including long-term insect-microbe mutualistic associations. Symbiont-mediated insect tolerance to high temperatures is an ecologically important trait that significantly influences an insect's life history. Disruption of microbial symbionts that are required by insects would substantially impact their pest status.

The infection density of symbionts is among the major parameters to understand their biological effects in host-endosymbionts interactions. Diaphorina citri harbors two bacteriome-associated bacterial endosymbionts (Candidatus Carsonella ruddii and Candidatus Profftella armatura), besides the intracellular reproductive parasite Wolbachia. In this study, the density dynamics of the three endosymbionts associated with the psyllid D.

Plant volatiles function as important signals for herbivores, parasitoids, predators, and neighboring plants. Herbivore attack can dramatically increase plant volatile emissions in many species. However, plants do not only react to herbivore-inflicted damage, but also already start adjusting their metabolism upon egg deposition by insects.

As many other insects with a restricted diet, the citrus psyllid Diaphorina citri Kuwayama, which vector the causing agent of the Huanglongbing, the bacteria Candidatus Liberibacter spp., is intimately associated with symbiotic microorganisms. These mutualist symbionts play a key role on their host nutritional ecology, and are vertically transmitted to the progeny.

We describe a radial keratotomy technique for the correction of high myopia. At present, the highest myopic correction is obtained by the smallest optical zone diameter (3 mm), by the maximum number of incisions (16), by the maximum number of redeepenings (3), and by incision of the tissue bridges. To obtain additional corneal flattening, we suggest lengthening the incisions curvilinearly.
