Background: Prostate cancer is one of the most common forms of cancer found in males making early diagnosis important. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been useful in visualizing and localizing tumor candidates and with the use of endorectal coils (ERC), the signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) can be improved. The coils introduce intensity inhomogeneities and the surface coil intensity correction built into MRI scanners is used to reduce these inhomogeneities.

Rehabilitative Ultrasound Imaging or diagnostic ultrasound is used to measure geometric properties of the lumbar multifidus muscle to infer muscle strength or degeneration for back pain therapy. For this purpose, a novel semi-automatic approach (FTS: Fisher-Tippett Segmentation) based upon the Decoupled Active Contour is proposed to reliably and quickly segment the lumbar multifidus muscle in diagnostic ultrasound. To overcome speckle or hardly visible region boundaries in ultrasound images, we first propose a novel external energy functional to explicitly consider the underlying Fisher-Tippett distribution of ultrasound data.

Multiparametric MRI has shown considerable promise as a diagnostic tool for prostate cancer grading. Diffusion-weighted MRI (DWI) has shown particularly strong potential for improving the delineation between cancerous and healthy tissue in the prostate gland. Current automated diagnostic methods using multiparametric MRI, however, tend to either use low-level features, which are difficult to interpret by radiologists and clinicians, or use highly subjective heuristic methods.

Firstly, we present a novel approach to AUHB-DWR that aims to improve image quality. We formulate the reconstruction of an apparent DW image as a hidden conditional random field (HCRF) in which tissue model diffusion parameters act as hidden states in this random field.

Active contours are a popular approach for object segmentation that uses an energy minimizing spline to extract an object's boundary. Nonparametric approaches can be computationally complex, whereas parametric approaches can be impacted by parameter sensitivity. A decoupled active contour (DAC) overcomes these problems by decoupling the external and internal energies and optimizing them separately.

Prostate cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in the male population. The detection of prostate cancer using imaging has been challenging until recently. Multiparametric magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) has been shown to allow accurate localization of the cancers and can help direct biopsies to cancer foci, which is required to plan the treatment.

Often hindered by speckle noise, the visualization of important biological tissue details in OCT that can aid disease diagnosis can be improved by speckle noise compensation. A challenge with handling speckle noise is its inherent non-stationary nature, where the underlying noise characteristics vary with the spatial location.

Low-dose computed tomography (CT) reduces radiation exposure but decreases signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) and diagnostic capabilities. Noise compensation can improve SNR so low-dose CT can provide valuable information for diagnosis without risking patient radiation exposure. In this study, a novel noise-compensated CT reconstruction method that uses spatially adaptive Monte-Carlo sampling to produce noise-compensated reconstructions is investigated.
