Successful treatment of refractory seizures with phenobarbital, propofol, and medetomidine following congenital portosystemic shunt ligation in a dog.

Objective: To report a case of refractory seizures following congenital portosystemic shunt (CPSS) ligation that regained normal neurologic and hepatic function with novel treatment. Medical care included constant rate infusions (CRI) of propofol and medetomidine in conjunction with phenobarbital and supportive intensive care.

Case Summary: A 2-year-old neutered male Bichon Frise was diagnosed with a single extrahepatic CPSS based on typical clinical signs, laboratory data, abdominal ultrasound, and computed tomographic angiography.

Brachycephalic Syndrome.

Animals presenting with brachycephalic syndrome suffer from multilevel obstruction of the airways as well as secondary structural collapse. Stenotic nares, aberrant turbinates, nasopharyngeal collapse, soft palate elongation and hyperplasia, laryngeal collapse, and left bronchus collapse are being described as the most common associated anomalies. Rhinoplasty and palatoplasty as well as newer surgical techniques and postoperative care strategies have resulted in significant improvement of the prognosis even in middle-aged dogs.

Nasopharyngeal Dimensions From Computed Tomography of Pugs and French Bulldogs With Brachycephalic Airway Syndrome.

Objective: To describe the nasopharyngeal airway dimensions of two brachycephalic breeds and to localize the area of smallest airway dimensions.

Study Design: Prospective, descriptive, computed tomographic imaging study.

Animals: Thirty pugs and 30 French bulldogs with brachycephalic upper airway syndrome.

The use of BoneWelding® technology in spinal surgery: an experimental study in sheep.

The innovative BoneWelding(®) technology, where ultrasound energy bonds bioresorbable implants to bone, was tested for its feasibility in spine surgery and its local thermal effects. The three tested concepts consisted of implementation of a resorbable plating system, two converging polymer pins and suture anchors to the cervical vertebral bodies. Bioresorbable polylactide implants (PLDLLA 70/30) were inserted ventrally into the third and fourth vertebral body of seven sheep, of which six were sacrificed at 2 months and one sheep immediately after temperature measurements during implant insertion.
