Despite the progress made in treating bipolar and unipolar affective disorders, lithium carbonate is still a common drug in psychiatric practice. Lithium-related renal side effects include nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, chronic tubulointerstitial nephropathy, and acute kidney injury (AKI).
