In order to alleviate the shortage of human donors, the use of porcine islets of Langerhans for xenotransplantation in diabetic patients has been proposed as a solution. To overcome rejection, we have developed a procedure for protecting the islets by combining them with Sertoli cells and placing them in a novel subcutaneous device, that generates an autologous collagen covering. A type 1 diabetic woman was closely monitored for 10 months, and then transplanted in two devices with two months of difference and a third time after 22 months.

Cotransplantation of porcine islets and Sertoli cells into preimplanted subcutaneous devices improve metabolic control in type 1 diabetic patients, and survive grafted for more than 4 years. We report here, further assessment of the endocrine and porcine nature of the surviving cells and the immune responses elicited toward Gal alpha(1,3)-Gal beta(1,4)-GlcNAc (Gal) antigen in patients who received a second and third transplants. True hermaphroditism (TH) is an unusual form of sex reversal, characterized by the development of testicular and ovarian tissue in the same subject. Approximately 60% of the patients have a 46,XX karyotype, 33% are mosaics with a second cell line containing a Y chromosome, while the remaining 7% are 46,XY. Molecular analyses have demonstrated that SRY is present in only 10% of TH with a 46,XX karyotype; therefore, in the remaining 90%, mutations at unknown X-linked or autosomal sex determining loci have been proposed as factors responsible for testicular development.

Four children with juvenile osteopetrosis are described who were treated with a combination of prednisone and a low calcium, high phosphate diet. One of the children, treated as a neonate, achieved complete clinical and radiological remission from the disease after nine months, at which point treatment was stopped.
