This paper briefly discusses some of the psychosocial factors associated with renal disease and peritoneal dialysis, considers the role that those factors play in relation to clinical treatment, and suggests nursing interventions that involve problem-solving with patients and providing support to caregivers. Because nurses are on the front line in encounters with patients, their contribution can facilitate support for the psychosocial situations of their patients through effective communication within a committed multidisciplinary team that share a vision of the significance of psychosocial intervention.
