Introduction: Using mini implants as transitional implants (TIs) for complete arch implant-supported rehabilitations may overcome limitations associated with mucosa-supported surgical guides and facilitate immediate fixed provisionalization. This study aimed to assess the success of TIs in supporting surgical guides for implant placement and fixed provisional prostheses.

Methods: Patients who received TIs between 2012 and 2023 for a complete arch implant-supported prosthesis were evaluated retrospectively.

Background: Self-assessment is key to improving the quality of work performed by dental professionals. The ability to accurately self-assess has been found to correlate with better clinical performance, making it an important skill for students to master during their dental education. Furthermore, studies conducted in dental schools across the world have shown that lower-performing students tend to overestimate their abilities compared to their peers.

Importance: Patients undergoing treatment for head and neck cancer (HNC) experience oral complications requiring substantial dental treatment. This treatment is commonly not reimbursed by medical insurers, presenting a potential financial burden for patients.

Objective: To characterize the dental care needs and associated cost burden for patients with HNC.

Psychiatric complications are commonly associated with alcoholism. Psychological symptoms appear during intoxication or in patients with concomitant psychiatric disorders or substance-induced psychiatric disorders. Moreover, the assessment of the psychiatric symptomatology is particularly challenging in patients who express difficulties to accept that the disorder is due to alcoholism.

Timing of the intervention for intracranial hematomas is critical for its success, specifically since expansion of the hemorrhage can result in debilitating and sometimes fatal outcomes. Led by Britton Chance, we and an extended team from University of Pennsylvania, Baylor and Drexel universities developed a handheld brain hematoma detector for early triage and diagnosis of head trauma victims. After obtaining de novo Food and Drug Administration clearance, over 200 systems are deployed in all Marine battalion aid stations around the world.

Excessive alcohol intake is one of the leading causes of premature death in Europe and particularly in Belgium. Belgian people are consuming more alcohol per year than the European average. It is well established that excessive alcohol consumption is a significant predictor of the development of hypertension (HTN).

Strigolactones (SLs) or closely related molecules were recently identified as phytohormones, acting as long-distance branching factors that suppress growth of pre-formed axillary buds in the shoot. The SL signaling pathways and light appear to be connected, as SLs were shown to induce light-regulated pathways and to mimic light-adapted plant growth. However, it is not yet clear how light affects SL levels.

Detection of cerebral hypoxia-ischemia in infants remains problematic, as current monitors in clinical practice are impractical, insensitive, or nonspecific. Our study develops a multiwavelength spatial domain construct for near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to detect cerebral hypoxia-ischemia and evaluates the construct in several models. The NIRS probe contains photodiode detectors 2, 3, and 4 cm from a three-wavelength, light-emitting diode.

Objective: Recent studies suggest that the main blood supply to the bony chin may be through a single arterial branch of the 2 sublingual arteries that anastomose at the midline and penetrate the bone through the lingual foramen, approximately 13 mm from the lower border of the mandible. The objective of this study was to demonstrate the validity of this hypothesis in vivo, to identify clinically the main blood supply to the bony chin, and to measure its parameters: diameter of vessel, direction of flow, and its volume. Materials and method Ultrasound/doppler measurements and periapical radiographs were taken on 20 healthy volunteers, randomly divided into 2 equal groups in order to compare the method's validity.

Threonine, lysine, methionine, and tryptophan are essential amino acids for humans and monogastric animals. Many of the commonly used diet formulations, particularly for pigs and poultry, contain limiting amounts of these amino acids. One approach for raising the level of essential amino acids is based on altering the regulation of their biosynthetic pathways in transgenic plants.
