Tracing produced water origins from wells hydraulically fractured with freshwater-based fluids is sometimes predicated on assumptions that (1) each geological formation contains compositionally unique brine and (2) produced water from recently hydraulically fractured wells resembles fresher meteoric water more so than produced water from older wells. These assumptions are not valid in Williston Basin oil wells sampled in this study. Although distinct average Ra/Ra ratios were found in water produced from the Bakken and Three Forks Formations, average δH, δO, specific gravity, and conductivity were similar but exhibited significant variability across five oil fields within each formation.

This paper presents a combined experimental and numerical study that characterises the directivity of blade-tower interaction (BTI) noise. Numerical computations were performed using a hybrid approach combining unsteady Reynolds-averaged Navier-Stokes equations and Curle's acoustic analogy, allowing the noise from the blades and the tower to be computed separately. The noise directivity of the blade and the tower components have a dipole pattern and a monopole-like pattern, respectively; hence, the resulting BTI noise directivity resembles an oval.

Cloth masks can be an alternative to medical masks during pandemics. In Tg-rasH2 carcinogenicity mouse models, a positive control group is treated with a carcinogen such as urethane or N-nitroso-N-methylurea to test study validity based on the presence of the expected proliferative lesions in the transgenic mice. We hypothesized that artificial intelligence-based deep learning (DL) could provide decision support for the toxicologic pathologist by screening for the proliferative changes, verifying the expected pattern for the positive control groups. Choral singing has become a major risk during the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic due to high infection rates. Our visualization and velocimetry results reveal that the majority of droplets expelled during singing follow the ambient airflow pattern. These results point toward the possibility of COVID-19 spread by small airborne droplets during singing.

A novel reverse-transcriptase loop mediated amplification (RT-LAMP) method targeting genes encoding the Spike (S) protein and RNA-dependent RNA polymerase (RdRP) of SARS-CoV-2 has been developed. The LAMP assay achieves a comparable limit of detection (25-50 copies per reaction) to commonly used RT-PCR protocols using clinical samples quantified by digital droplet PCR. The organic composition of produced waters (flowback and formation waters) from the middle member of the Bakken Formation and the Three Forks Formation in the Williston Basin, North Dakota were examined to aid in the remediation of surface contamination and help develop treatment methods for produced-water recycling. Twelve produced water samples were collected from the Bakken and Three Forks Formations and analyzed for non-purgeable dissolved organic carbon (NPDOC), acetate, and extractable hydrocarbons. NPDOC and acetate concentrations from sampled wells from ranged from 33-190 mg per liter (mg/L) and 16-40 mg/L, respectively.
