A vaginal septum is a type of Mullerian anomaly that can be longitudinal or transverse, separating the vagina into two canals. Vaginal septa occur due to lack of fusion and recanalization of Mullerian structures, and often present with voiding dysfunction with potential impact on fertility and sexual function. We describe a rare case of concomitant transverse and longitudinal vaginal septa and discuss its presentation.

Purpose: The 2-step floating catchment area (2SFCA) method of measuring access to care has never been used to study cancer disparities in Appalachia. First, we evaluated the 2SFCA method in relation to traditional methods. We then examined the impact of access to mammography centers and primary care on late-stage breast cancer diagnosis and receipt of adjuvant hormonal therapy.

Proteus syndrome is a rare disorder of asymmetric overgrowth of various tissues of the body and is associated with specific tumors appearing before the second decade. Although there have been reports of lesions of the genitourinary tract associated with Proteus syndrome, a case of serous borderline tumor of the paratestis has not been previously recorded. We report the first such case in a 20-month-old child who presented with a left-sided testicular mass that was found on histology to be a serous borderline tumor of the paratestis.

There is a paucity of literature systemically examining the effects of access to cancer care resources on adjuvant endocrine therapy (AET) use behaviors, especially in underserved regions such as the Appalachian region in the United States, where gaps in healthcare access are well documented. The objectives of this study were to explore AET adherence and persistence in Appalachia, delineate the effects of access to care cancer on adherence/persistence, and evaluate the influences of adherence and persistence on overall survival.A retrospective cohort study from 2006 to 2008 was conducted among female breast cancer survivors living in the Appalachian counties of 4 states (PA, OH, KY, and NC).

Addition of an anionic donor to an Mn(V) (O) porphyrinoid complex causes a dramatic increase in 2-electron oxygen-atom-transfer (OAT) chemistry. The 6-coordinate [Mn(V) (O)(TBP8 Cz)(CN)](-) was generated from addition of Bu4 N(+) CN(-) to the 5-coordinate Mn(V) (O) precursor. The cyanide-ligated complex was characterized for the first time by Mn K-edge X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and gives MnO=1.

Rhabdomyosarcoma accounts for 40% of paratesticular malignancies and 5% of testicular and paratesticular malignancies in children and adolescents. The Children's Oncology Group currently recommends computed tomography (CT) or magnetic resonance imaging for staging of paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma in children. The present case illustrates a 9-year-old boy with paratesticular rhabdomyosarcoma who had negative findings on a staging CT scan and a subsequent positron emission tomography-CT scan demonstrating retroperitoneal lymph node metastasis.

Malignant rhabdoid tumors (MRTs) are well recognized in the kidney and extrarenal sites such as soft tissues, retroperitoneum, and bladder but are classified as atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors in the central nervous system. The unifying features of both extracranial MRT and atypical teratoid/rhabdoid tumors are the exon deletions/mutations of the SMARCB1 (SWI/SNF related, matrix associated, actin dependent regulator of chromatin, subfamily b, member 1) gene in 22q11.23 and resulting loss of SMARCB1/INI1 (integrase interactor 1) protein expression by immunohistochemistry.

We investigated whether eating lunch mindfully, in contrast to eating with distractions or no particular focus, reduces later snack intake and if this is related to a measure of meal memory. The design was between-subjects with three conditions. Twenty-nine female undergraduate students either ate a fixed lunch while (1) focusing on the sensory characteristics of the food as they ate (food focus group), (2) reading a newspaper article about food (food thoughts control group) or (3) in the absence of any secondary task (neutral control group).

Background: There appears to be a conflict between published literature and in vitro evidence concerning the effects of treatment-induced side-effects on prostate cancer patients. There is an existing body of research which indicates evidence for a phenomenon whereby quality-of-life scores of patients' post-treatment reflect no difference to healthy controls and are perhaps even higher than before treatment, despite the substantial side-effects such as sexual and urinary dysfunction. However, when observing clinical patients at Good Hope Hospital urology clinic, it appears that whilst patients are seemingly unaffected by the threat of sexual and urinary side-effects of treatment at diagnosis, they become increasingly concerned about these consequences following treatment, indicating evidence for a response shift in the opposite direction.

Background: Flow cytometric techniques are increasingly used in pretransplant crossmatching, although there remains debate regarding the clinical significance and predictive value of donor-specific antibodies detected by flow cytometry. At least some of the discrepancies between published studies may arise from differences in cutoffs used and lack of standardization of the test.

Methods: We selected cut-off values for pretransplant flow cytometric crossmatching (FCXM) based on the correlation of retrospective results with the occurrence of antibody-mediated rejection.
