Functional electrical stimulation may be used to correct hemiplegic drop foot. An optimised stimulation envelope to reproduce the EMG pattern observed in the tibialis anterior (TA) during healthy gait has been proposed by O'Keeffe et al. [O'Keeffe, D.

This study examined the effect of NaOCl-MTAD interaction on the antimicrobial substantivity of MTAD in dentin. Dentin cores previously irrigated with either MTAD, or in conjunction with 1.

We aimed to evaluate sympathetic vasoconstriction contributions by ATP and norepinephrine in the tail artery from streptozotocin-diabetic rats by using isometric vascular rings. Tail arteries were isolated from rats made diabetic 3 mo earlier with streptozotocin (diabetic group), age-matched nondiabetic rats (nondiabetic injected), age-matched untreated animals (noninjected normal), and age-matched untreated animals in high glucose control Krebs solution (high glucose control).

The aim of this study was to determine whether the stimulus for these changes is metabolic or mechanical. Eight healthy adults aged 22 +/- 4 years (mean +/- s) completed two exercise bouts-a 10 km road run and a deep water running session.

Design: Cohort analysis of data from the Project Impact database used to catalog admissions and outcomes to a surgical intensive care unit, with predetermined end point analyses of outcomes.
Setting: Surgical intensive care unit serving Tufts-New England Medical Center, a tertiary care and university medical center in Boston.
Papanicolaou screening is feasible anywhere that screening for cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in developing countries, is appropriate. After documenting that the Vietnam War had contributed to the problem of cervical cancer in Vietnam, we participated in a grass roots effort to establish a nationwide cervical cancer prevention program in that country and performed root cause analyses of program deficiencies. We found that real-world obstacles to successful cervical cancer prevention in developing countries involve people far more than technology and that such obstacles can be appropriately managed through a systems approach focused on programmatic quality rather than through ideological commitments to technology.

Although it is known that exercise exerts a positive regulatory effect on collagen synthesis, the effects of endurance training on muscle endomysial connective tissue in man are not so well documented. To investigate this, a single muscle biopsy was collected from two groups of volunteers - endurance-trained sports participants and age-matched healthy untrained individuals. Endomysial staining intensity of types I, III and IV collagen was quantified by immunohistochemical staining and image analysis methods.

We seek to develop sustainable, cost-effective cervical cancer prevention services for women in Vietnam. Because the problem of cervical cancer in Vietnam is in part a legacy of the Second Indochinese War, we also seek to examine obstacles to reconciliation by presenting what most acknowledge to be a remedy in advance of what some will perceive to be an accusation.

Background: The first Distance Learning Course in Occupational Medicine was set up in 1984 at the Department of Occupational Health, University of Manchester.
Aims: This paper describes the progress of that course and developments within distance learning education in occupational health at The University of Manchester over the subsequent 20 years. It also looks at the future objectives and modes of teaching of occupational health at Manchester via distance learning.

The clinical application of EMG requires that the recorded signal is representative of the muscle of interest and is not contaminated with signals from adjacent muscles. Some authors report that surface EMG is not suitable for obtaining information on a single muscle but rather reflects muscle group function [J. Perry, C.

It is autosomal dominant in transmission. Patients with DWD are prone to frequent superinfection including the rare complication of Kaposi varicelliform eruption.

This article will discuss the prevalence and impact of the infectious diseases affecting adult Oklahomans for which vaccines are available. Evidence for vaccine utilization and the present status and future aspirations for population-wide immunization rates in Oklahoma will also be reviewed. The information and data herein are taken mainly from recommendations established by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF); the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) publication Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Disease; the findings of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report; the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) State of the State's Health Report; and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a telephone survey conducted by the CDC.

This study examined the effectiveness of prophylactic supplementation with vitamins C and E on symptoms of muscle damage in a single blind, two-group study design. Twelve male volunteers were randomly assigned to either treatment or control groups.

The indicators assessed in this review fall within the impact category of the driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework. Instrumental records have shown unequivocal changes in climatic conditions over the past 30 years at a global level but impact indicators allow these changes to be monitored at a finer resolution.

DLG3 encodes synapse-associated protein 102 (SAP102), a member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase protein family. Neuronal SAP102 is expressed during early brain development and is localized to the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses.

Nine volunteers [5 men and 4 women, mean age 23 (SD 4) yr] each performed a bout of 100 maximum voluntary eccentric contractions of the knee extensors. Muscle biopsies were taken before exercise and on days 4 and 22 afterward.

Statistical significance was determined by 2-way analysis of variance, with the number of isolates tested each year as a weighting factor. The analysis of baseline-to-end point change in the percentage of susceptibility and the slope of the regression line (trend line) for logit percentage of susceptibility showed that the overall percentage of susceptibility to fluoroquinolones decreased significantly during the study period (P<.

An optimized stimulation intensity envelope for use in hemiplegic drop foot applications has been developed. The traditional trapezoidal stimulation intensity approach has been examined and found to be inconsistent with the muscle activity patterns observed in healthy gait and therefore unsuitable. Experimental functional electrical stimulation (FES)-elicited tibialis anterior (TA) electromyography (EMG) data was taken over the ankle range of interest (occurring during active dorsiflexion and loading response) while also taking into account the type of TA muscle contraction occurring (concentric, eccentric, and isometric) and the speed of hemiplegic ankle joint rotation.

In reflecting on this history, Dick Krugman has referred to this uneven level of attention as a series of "waves" in which apparent progress is often minimized by an inability to sustain political commitment to a given reform or course of action. To an extent, this pattern reflects deep differences among child welfare advocates, researchers, and practitioners on how best to proceed.
