We aimed to evaluate sympathetic vasoconstriction contributions by ATP and norepinephrine in the tail artery from streptozotocin-diabetic rats by using isometric vascular rings. The effects of impact and non-impact exercise on circulating markers of collagen remodelling in humans.

Systems analysis of real-world obstacles to successful cervical cancer prevention in developing countries.

Papanicolaou screening is feasible anywhere that screening for cervical cancer, the leading cause of cancer-related death among women in developing countries, is appropriate. After documenting that the Vietnam War had contributed to the problem of cervical cancer in Vietnam, we participated in a grass roots effort to establish a nationwide cervical cancer prevention program in that country and performed root cause analyses of program deficiencies. We found that real-world obstacles to successful cervical cancer prevention in developing countries involve people far more than technology and that such obstacles can be appropriately managed through a systems approach focused on programmatic quality rather than through ideological commitments to technology.

Muscle connective tissue content of endurance-trained and inactive individuals.

Although it is known that exercise exerts a positive regulatory effect on collagen synthesis, the effects of endurance training on muscle endomysial connective tissue in man are not so well documented. To investigate this, a single muscle biopsy was collected from two groups of volunteers - endurance-trained sports participants and age-matched healthy untrained individuals. Endomysial staining intensity of types I, III and IV collagen was quantified by immunohistochemical staining and image analysis methods.

Coming to terms with Vietnam: the Viet/American Cervical Cancer Prevention Project.

The Viet/American Cervical Cancer Prevention Project embraces a dual mission. We seek to develop sustainable, cost-effective cervical cancer prevention services for women in Vietnam. Because the problem of cervical cancer in Vietnam is in part a legacy of the Second Indochinese War, we also seek to examine obstacles to reconciliation by presenting what most acknowledge to be a remedy in advance of what some will perceive to be an accusation.

A series of 21 novel 2-[(aminocarbonyl)amino]-5-acetylenyl-3-thiophenecarboxamides were synthesized and evaluated for the inhibition of IKK-2. In spite of their often modest activity on the enzyme, six selected analogs showed significant inhibition of the production of inflammatory cytokine IL-8 in IL-1beta stimulated rheumatoid arthritis-derived synovial fibroblasts, demonstrating their potential usefulness as NF-kappaB regulators.

Darier-White disease (DWD), otherwise known as keratosis follicularis, is a rare disorder of keratinization of the epidermis, mucous membranes, and nails. It is autosomal dominant in transmission. Patients with DWD are prone to frequent superinfection including the rare complication of Kaposi varicelliform eruption.

This article will discuss the prevalence and impact of the infectious diseases affecting adult Oklahomans for which vaccines are available. Evidence for vaccine utilization and the present status and future aspirations for population-wide immunization rates in Oklahoma will also be reviewed. The information and data herein are taken mainly from recommendations established by the US Preventive Services Task Force (USPSTF); the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) publication Epidemiology and Prevention of Vaccine-Preventable Disease; the findings of the Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP) as published in the CDC's Morbidity and Mortality Weekly Report; the Oklahoma State Department of Health (OSDH) State of the State's Health Report; and the Behavioral Risk Factor Surveillance System (BRFSS), a telephone survey conducted by the CDC.

Effects of dietary supplementation with vitamins C and E on muscle function during and after eccentric contractions in humans.

Reactive oxygen species may contribute to exercise-induced skeletal muscle damage, and antioxidants may protect against such damage. This study examined the effectiveness of prophylactic supplementation with vitamins C and E on symptoms of muscle damage in a single blind, two-group study design. A review of indicators of climate change for use in Ireland.

Impact indicators are systems/organisms, the vitality of which alters in response to changes in environmental condition. The indicators assessed in this review fall within the impact category of the driver-pressure-state-impact-response (DPSIR) framework. Instrumental records have shown unequivocal changes in climatic conditions over the past 30 years at a global level but impact indicators allow these changes to be monitored at a finer resolution.

Mutations in the DLG3 gene cause nonsyndromic X-linked mental retardation.

We have identified truncating mutations in the human DLG3 (neuroendocrine dlg) gene in 4 of 329 families with moderate to severe X-linked mental retardation. DLG3 encodes synapse-associated protein 102 (SAP102), a member of the membrane-associated guanylate kinase protein family. Neuronal SAP102 is expressed during early brain development and is localized to the postsynaptic density of excitatory synapses.

Skeletal muscle collagen content in humans after high-force eccentric contractions.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of high-force eccentric muscle contractions on collagen remodeling and on circulating levels of matrix metalloproteinases (MMP) and tissue inhibitors of metalloproteinases (TIMP) in humans. Nine volunteers [5 men and 4 women, mean age 23 (SD 4) yr] each performed a bout of 100 maximum voluntary eccentric contractions of the knee extensors. Muscle biopsies were taken before exercise and on days 4 and 22 afterward.

Relationship between fluoroquinolone use and changes in susceptibility to fluoroquinolones of selected pathogens in 10 United States teaching hospitals, 1991-2000.

We retrospectively examined the relationship between fluoroquinolone use and the susceptibilities of 11 bacterial pathogens to fluoroquinolones in 10 US teaching hospitals from 1991 through 2000. An optimized stimulation intensity envelope for use in hemiplegic drop foot applications has been developed. The traditional trapezoidal stimulation intensity approach has been examined and found to be inconsistent with the muscle activity patterns observed in healthy gait and therefore unsuitable. Experimental functional electrical stimulation (FES)-elicited tibialis anterior (TA) electromyography (EMG) data was taken over the ankle range of interest (occurring during active dorsiflexion and loading response) while also taking into account the type of TA muscle contraction occurring (concentric, eccentric, and isometric) and the speed of hemiplegic ankle joint rotation.
