- Middle-molecules, like Cystatin C (CyC) and Beta-2-Microglobulin (B2M), accumulate in children on hemodialysis and can increase the risk of cardiovascular issues; however, CyC may be a better marker than B2M due to its molecular characteristics.
- In a study involving 21 hemodialysis sessions in seven children, CyC levels remained stable throughout, while B2M levels increased, suggesting that CyC may not be influenced by the dialysis process as much as B2M.
- The findings indicate that CyC should be considered a preferred marker for monitoring middle-molecule removal and assessing the effectiveness of intensified hemodialysis treatments.
Background: Cystatin C (CyC) concentration has been suggested as a marker of middle-molecule accumulation, hemodialysis (HD) adequacy and for estimating residual renal function (RRF), but it has not been studied in pediatric HD. High CyC is associated with increased cardiovascular disease (CVD). We investigated CyC kinetics and the effect of RRF on CyC in a pediatric HD population.
