Background: The distribution and determinants of left ventricular (LV) geometric patterns and their relation to LV function in African Americans is not well described despite higher rates of LV hypertrophy and cardiovascular mortality reported in this group.
Purpose: This study investigates the distribution and clinical correlates of LV geometric patterns and how these patterns relate to function in a population-based African American cohort.
Methods: The study population included participants in the Jackson cohort of ARIC, who underwent echocardiograms between 1993 and 1995.
It remains unclear whether genetic factors contribute to the susceptibility to valve calcification. Accordingly, echocardiograms and genotyping were performed in 1871 hypertensive siblings who participated in the Hypertension Genetic Epidemiology Network Study. Genome-wide affected sibpair nonparametric linkage analysis was conducted using the allele-sharing method implemented in the Merlin computer program.

Methods: GFR, estimated by the Modification of Diet in Renal Disease equation, and albuminuria, measured as albumin to creatinine ratio (ACR), were adjusted for gender, age, centre, mean blood pressure, anti-hypertensive medication class and diabetes status using SOLAR.

Background: The aim of this study was to determine whether the angiotensin-converting enzyme (ACE) insertion-deletion (ID) polymorphism interacts with pravastatin to modify the risk of coronary heart disease (CHD) and other cardiovascular end points in a large clinical trial.
Methods: GenHAT is an ancillary study of the ALLHAT. The ACE ID genotyped population in the lipid-lowering arm of ALLHAT included 9467 participants randomly assigned to pravastatin (n = 4741) or to usual care (n = 4726).
Objectives: The goal of this study was to examine the cross-sectional associations of cardiovascular risk factors with left ventricular (LV) geometry and systolic function measured by cardiac magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) in the Multiethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA).

Methods: We studied 514 male and 965 female African-Americans 51 to 70 years old, in whom echocardiographic left ventricular mass measurements were collected for the ARIC Study.
Purpose: Twenty-year trends in lifestyle (leisure, household, and transportation related) physical activity and leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) were evaluated in the Minnesota Heart Survey (MHS), a population-based surveillance study to monitor trends in cardiovascular risk factor levels among residents of the Minneapolis-St. Paul metropolitan area.
Methods: The Minnesota LTPA questionnaire was administered to adult participants in one of five cross-sectional MHS surveys conducted in 1980 (N = 1626), 1985 (N = 2292), 1990 (N = 2552), 1995 (N = 2432), and 2000 (N = 3089).

In the Multi-Ethnic Study of Atherosclerosis (MESA), we estimated the proportion of intermediate-risk participants whose risk status might change based on additional testing using CRP and/or CAC score.
Methods: Framingham 10-year CHD risk scores (FRS) were calculated and cross tabulations were used to determine the percent of individuals at intermediate-risk by FRS with a CRP >3mg/L and/or CAC score >100 AU.
Atherosclerosis accounts for 75% of all deaths from cardiovascular disease and includes coronary heart disease (CHD), stroke, and other diseases of the arteries. More than half of all CHD is attributable to abnormalities in levels and metabolism of lipids. From 2002 to 2004, as part of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute's Family Heart Study, coronary artery calcium (CAC) scans by 4-slice multidetector computed tomography were performed in 3,359 subjects, including 389 with clinically diagnosed CHD. Among these was a cohort of 2,254 patients who had been asymptomatic at an initial examination 7 to 9 years previously (1994 to 1996), with 111 who had developed newly diagnosed, nonfatal CHD since the initial examination.

Findings from autopsy studies of sudden cardiac death have suggested a link between left ventricular hypertrophy and severity of coronary atherosclerosis.
