Article Synopsis
  • In a study about endometrial cancer, doctors looked at how preoperative health issues like anemia (low red blood cells), thrombocytosis (high platelets), and leucocytosis (high white blood cells) affect patient survival and treatment response.
  • They checked medical data from 894 patients from 10 hospitals over about 4.5 years and found that anemia and thrombocytosis linked to higher risk levels for the disease.
  • The results showed that anemia made survival rates worse, especially for patients getting radiation therapy, meaning those with anemia had a harder time fighting the cancer.

Aims: Uterine serous carcinoma (USC) is an aggressive subtype of endometrial cancer with high rates of relapse and death. As adjuvant therapy might be beneficial in early-stage disease, the impact of standard complete surgical staging is questioned. Therefore, we wanted to explore the optimal treatment strategy for women diagnosed with USC.

Self-care interventions hold the potential to improve sexual and reproductive health (SRH) and well-being. Yet key knowledge gaps remain regarding how knowledge and uptake vary across different types of self-care interventions. There is also limited understanding of health workers' confidence in promoting SRH self-care interventions, and how this may differ based on personal uptake experiences.

Article Synopsis
  • Adolescents in the Northwest Territories (NWT), Canada, experience higher rates of depression and mental health issues compared to the national average, with significant gaps in understanding the contributing factors.
  • A study involving 399 adolescents aged 13-18 found that a significant percentage faced food insecurity and varying degrees of depression, with certain demographics, like cisgender women and those experiencing dating violence, at higher risk for severe symptoms.
  • The study suggests a need for targeted mental health interventions that consider socio-economic issues, relationship dynamics, and the impact of gender and sexual orientation on mental health in this population.

Objective: To investigate the relationship between obesity and sarcopenia in relation to overall survival (OS) and disease-specific survival (DSS) in high-grade endometrial cancer patients.

Methods: We conducted a retrospective study in women diagnosed with high-grade endometrial cancer (EC) between February 2006 and August 2017 in the Royal Cornwall Hospital who had abdominal computerized tomography (CT)-scan as part of routine staging work-up. Sarcopenia was assessed by measuring psoas-, paraspinal- and abdominal wall muscles on CT and defined by skeletal muscle index ≤41 cm /m .

Background: Obesity is an important risk factor for the development of endometrial cancer (EC). Recent data showed that body fat distribution might be more relevant than Body Mass Index (BMI). High visceral fat percentage was shown to be an independent predictor for survival in EC, but mainly included grade 1-2 EC.

Introduction: Increasingly, frail elderly need to live at home for longer, relying on support from informal caregivers and community-based health- and social care professionals. To align care and avoid fragmentation, integrated care programmes are arising. A promising example of such a programme is the Care Chain Frail Elderly (CCFE) in the Netherlands, which supports elderly with case and care complexity living at home with the best possible health and quality of life.

In recent years, postgraduate assessment programmes around the world have embraced workplace-based assessment (WBA) and its related tools. Despite their widespread use, results of studies on the validity and reliability of these tools have been variable. Although in many countries decisions about residents' continuation of training and certification as a specialist are based on the composite results of different WBAs collected in a portfolio, to our knowledge, the reliability of such a WBA toolbox has never been investigated.
