Objectives: To assess the additional detection rate (ADR) of within-patient comparisons of Narrow band imaging (NBI) and white light cystoscopy (WLC) for non-muscle invasive bladder cancer (NMIBC) detection and compare the impact of NBI and WLC on bladder cancer recurrence risk.

Methods: We searched relevant studies from PubMed, Embase, Medline, Web of Science and the Cochrane Library database for all articles in English published beforeJuly26th, 2016. Pooled ADR, diagnostic accuracy, relative risk (RR) and their 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were calculated.

Nutritional background changes the hypolipidemic effects of fenofibrate in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Peroxisome proliferation activated receptor α (PPARα) is an important transcriptional regulator of lipid metabolism and is activated by high-fat diet (HFD) and fibrates in mammals. However, whether nutritional background affects PPARα activation and the hypolipidemic effects of PPARα ligands have not been investigated in fish. In the present two-phase study of Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus), fish were first fed a HFD (13% fat) or low-fat diet (LFD; 1% fat) diet for 10 weeks, and then fish from the first phase were fed the HFD or LFD supplemented with 200 mg/kg body weight fenofibrate for 4 weeks.

Systemic regulation of L-carnitine in nutritional metabolism in zebrafish, Danio rerio.

Excess fat accumulation has been observed widely in farmed fish; therefore, efficient lipid-lowering factors have obtained high attention in the current fish nutrition studies. Dietary L-carnitine can increase fatty acid β-oxidation in mammals, but has produced contradictory results in different fish species. To date, the mechanisms of metabolic regulation of L-carnitine in fish have not been fully determined.

Identification of aberrantly expressed glycans in gastric cancer by integrated lectin microarray and mass spectrometric analyses.

Cancer progression is usually associated with alterations of glycan expression patterns. Little is known regarding global glycomics in gastric cancer, the most common type of epithelial cancer. We integrated lectin microarray and mass spectrometry (MS) methods to profile glycan expression in three gastric cancer cell lines (SGC-7901, HGC-27, and MGC-803) and one normal gastric epithelial cell line (GES-1).

Detection and phylogenetic analysis of porcine epidemic diarrhea virus in central China based on the ORF3 gene and the S1 gene.

Background: Porcine epidemic diarrhea (PED) has increased in severity in China since 2010. To investigate further the infectivity, genetic diversity and molecular epidemiology of its causative agent, the porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV), we assessed 129 clinical samples, which were the intestinal tissue of piglets with severe diarrhea, from 17 cities in central China. Both the spike (S) glycoprotein (S1, 1-789 amino acids (aa)) and the full-length ORF3 gene of 21 representative field strains from 21 farms in 11 cities were sequenced and analysed.

Sevoflurane inhibits the migration and invasion of glioma cells by upregulating microRNA-637.

Cancer cell migration and invasion are essential features of the metastatic process. Volatile anesthetic sevoflurane inhibits the migration and invasion of multiple cancer cell lines; however, its effects on glioma cells are unclear. Emerging evidence suggests that microRNA (miRNA)-637 regulates glioma cell migration and invasion through the Akt1 pathway.

Preliminary study on the relationship between dexamethasone and pathogen susceptibility on crucian carp (Carassius auratus).

Dexamethasone, a known immunosuppressant, can inhibit the immune response and increase the amount of pathogen in body, but the role of dexamethasone affecting susceptibility of crucian carp (Carassius auratus) to pathogen is unclear. The effects of dexamethasone on susceptibility of crucian carp to Aeromonas hydrophila were investigated in this study. The fish were divided into four groups randomly and injected intraperitoneally by dexamethasone for 0 day (group D), 3 days (group C), 6 days (group B), and 9 days (group A), respectively.

Religion and HIV Sexual Risk Among Men Who Have Sex With Men in China.

Background: Religion can profoundly impact the sociocultural contexts that shape sexual HIV vulnerability among men who have sex with men (MSM). However, the relationship between religion and HIV vulnerability remains poorly understood for MSM in China, where religious affiliations and practices are rapidly increasing.

Methods: Using cross-sectional survey data collected in Beijing and Tianjin, China, from 2013 to 2014 (n = 400), this study tests 3 hypotheses regarding religion and HIV sexual risk: (1) HIV vulnerabilities and testing patterns among religiously affiliated MSM are lower than for areligious MSM, (2) religiosity is inversely associated with HIV vulnerabilities and testing, and (3) the magnitude of inverse association between religiosity and HIV vulnerabilities/testing will be stronger among Christian and Muslim MSM than Buddhist and areligious MSM.

Quantitative proteomic analysis and comparison of two bone marrow stromal cell lines using the SILAC method.

Two human bone marrow stromal cell lines, HS5 and HS27a, co-cultured with myeloid cells, have frequently been used in studies of cross talk between cells in the bone marrow microenvironment and hematopoietic cells. Altered expression of proteins is typically associated with cell-cell signal transduction and regulation of cellular functions. Many studies have focused on key proteins that contribute to functional differences in cell co-culture models, but global quantitative proteome analysis of HS5 and HS27a has not been performed.

Potentials of the elevated circulating miR-185 level as a biomarker for early diagnosis of HBV-related liver fibrosis.

Early diagnosis of liver fibrosis is critical for early intervention and prognosis of various chronic liver diseases. Conventional repeated histological assessment is impractical due to the associated invasiveness. In the current study, we evaluated circulating miR-185 as a potential biomarker to predict initiation and progression of liver fibrosis.

Background/aims: Alzheimer's disease (AD) is characterized by two major hallmarks: the deposition and accumulation of β-amyloid (Aβ) peptide and hyperphosphorylated tau in intracellular neurofibrillary tangles. Sets of evidence show that leptin reduces Aβ production and tau phosphorylation. Herein, we investigated the signaling pathways activated by leptin, to extensively understand its mechanism.

[Imaging characteristics and the operative effect of the irreducible femoral intertrochanteric fractures].

Objective: To analyse the imaging characteristics of the irreducible femoral intertrochanteric fracture and evaluate the operative effect of closed poking reduction and intramedullary nail fixation.

Methods: From December 2011 to October 2015, 28 patients with irreducible femoral intertrochanteric fracture were treated by closed poking reduction and intramedullary nail fixation including 12 males and 16 females with an average age of 72 years old ranging from 58 to 89 years old. According to AO classification: 5 cases were type A2.

Association of TIP30 expression and prognosis of hepatocellular carcinoma in patients with HBV infection.

Altered expression of TIP30, a tumor suppressor, has been observed in many cancers. In this study, we have evaluated the expression of TIP30 in the tissues of 209 hepatocellular carcinomas (HCC) and their adjacent tissues by using a high-density tissue microarray, and analyzed its correlation with the clinical pathological parameters of the patients. The results revealed negative or weak expression of TIP30 in 43.

Complete Genome Sequence of Porcine Epidemic Diarrhea Virus from an Outbreak in a Vaccinated Farm in Shandong, China.

Porcine epidemic diarrhea virus, a member of the family Coronaviridae, is an economically important pathogen that causes severe enteritis, vomiting, dehydration, and a high mortality rate, especially among suckling piglets. Here, we report the complete genome sequence (28,036 nucleotides [nt]) of a porcine epidemic diarrhea virus (PEDV) strain isolated in a novel outbreak in Shandong, China.

Mechanisms and metabolic regulation of PPARα activation in Nile tilapia (Oreochromis niloticus).

Although the key metabolic regulatory functions of mammalian peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor α (PPARα) have been thoroughly studied, the molecular mechanisms and metabolic regulation of PPARα activation in fish are less known. In the first part of the present study, Nile tilapia (Nt)PPARα was cloned and identified, and high mRNA expression levels were detected in the brain, liver, and heart. NtPPARα was activated by an agonist (fenofibrate) and by fasting and was verified in primary hepatocytes and living fish by decreased phosphorylation of NtPPARα and/or increased NtPPARα mRNA and protein expression.

Taurine Pretreatment Prevents Isoflurane-Induced Cognitive Impairment by Inhibiting ER Stress-Mediated Activation of Apoptosis Pathways in the Hippocampus in Aged Rats.

Isoflurane, a commonly used inhalation anesthetic, may induce neurocognitive deficits, especially in elderly patients after surgery. Recent study demonstrated that isoflurane caused endoplasmic reticulum (ER) stress and subsequent neuronal apoptosis in the brain, contributing to cognitive deficits. Taurine, a major intracellular free amino acid, has been shown to inhibit ER stress and neuronal apoptosis in several neurological disorders.

Associations of current marital status and living arrangements with HIV and syphilis risk: findings from a community-based sample of men who have sex with men in China.

Chinese men who have sex with men (MSM) are disproportionally affected by HIV and sexually transmitted infections (STIs), but little is known about the role of current marital status and living arrangements in shaping their HIV/syphilis risk. A cross-sectional study was conducted among MSM in Beijing, China to assess their sociodemographic/behavioral characteristics between married and single MSM, and test the hypothesis that currently married MSM have a lower odds of being HIV- and/or syphilis-infected. Participants were recruited via short message services, peer referral, internet, and community outreach.

[Construction of eukaryotic expressing vector of human P2X7 and establishment of stable transfectant cell line].

Objective: To construct eukaryotic expression vector of human P2X7gene and transfect HEK293 cells so as to establish stable HEK293 cell line.

Methods: P2X7 gene was amplified by polymerase chain reaction from the human brain P2X7 cDNA and inserted into a vector pEGFP-N1 to construct a recombinant plasmidcalled pEGFP-N1/P2X7. The correct recombinant plasmid was transfected into HEK293 cells by X-fect transfection reagent.

[Factors associated with anastomotic leak following anterior resection for rectal cancer].

Objective: To explore the related factors of anastomotic leakfollowing anterior resection for the rectal cancer and the association of the preoperative nutritional risk screening 2002(NRS2002) score.

Methods: Clinical data of 396 rectal cancer patients who underwent elective anterior resection from January 2010 to July 2015 at Affiliated Lu'an Hospital of Anhui Medical University were collected. Patient's nutritional risk score on admission was calculated by NRS2002 scoring system according to original medical records.

Obesity is a risk factor for several pain syndromes and is associated with increased pain sensitivity. Evidence suggests that obesity causes the downregulation of peroxisome proliferator‑activated receptor (PPAR)α in the spinal cord, contributing to augmented peripheral edema and inflammatory hyperalgesia. Ursolic acid (UA), a natural pentacyclic triterpenoid carboxylic acid, has been shown to upregulate PPARα in the peripheral tissues of obese animals.

To establish and manage of multicentral collection bio-sample banks of malignant tumors from digestive system, the paper designed a multicentral management system, established the standard operation procedures (SOPs) and leaded ten hospitals nationwide to collect tumor samples. The biobank has been established for half a year, and has collected 695 samples from patients with digestive system malignant tumor. The clinical data is full and complete, labeled in a unified way and classified to be managed.

[Analysis and prenatal diagnosis of PKLR gene mutations in a family with pyruvate kinase deficiency].

Objective: To evaluate the feasibility of genetic and prenatal diagnosis for a family affected with pyruvate kinase deficiency (PKD).

Methods: Targeted sequence capture and high-throughput sequencing technology was used to detect the exons and exon-intron boundaries of the PKLR gene in a clinically suspected PKD patient. Meanwhile, the genotype of the pedigree was validated by Sanger sequencing.
