Article Synopsis
  • Ammonium (NH4) transport is crucial for the growth of tea plants, but there's limited understanding of ammonium transporter (AMT) genes in these plants.
  • Researchers identified 16 putative AMT genes, categorized them into three groups, and found them spread across 12 chromosomes with minimal duplication.
  • Expression analysis showed these genes are mainly active in apical buds and roots, and experiments in yeast confirmed that CsAMTs can effectively take up ammonium.

  • Nitrogen is crucial for plant growth, and tea plants specifically prefer ammonium (NH) over nitrate (NO) for better carbon/nitrogen metabolism.
  • In an experiment with 'Longjing 43' tea seedlings, researchers observed that nitrate increased the production of tea polyphenols and catechins while zero nitrogen also showed similar results.
  • Conversely, ammonium treatments boosted amino acids like theanine and glutamate, which enhance tea's flavor, suggesting that a mixed nitrogen approach balances carbon and nitrogen metabolism better than using a single source.

Microtubules are involved in celluar processes of movement, intracellular trafficking and mitosis, thus microtubule-targeting agents have been widely used in cancer therapy. Herein, we report isopenicin A, a novel meroterpenoid isolated from the plant endophytic fungus of Penicillium sp. sh18, as a novel microtubule binding molecule that efficiently depolymerizes microtubule polymerization to evoke G2/M cell cycle arrest and subsequent cell apoptosis, contributing to proliferation inhibition of human tumor cell lines.

The majority of Musashi 1 (Msi1)‑positive cells derived from mouse embryonic stem cells (mESCs) are prone to differentiate into neural epithelial‑like cells, and only a small proportion of Msi1‑positive cells differentiate into intestinal epithelial‑like cells. Whether inhibiting the phosphatidylinositol 3‑kinase (PI3K) signaling of mESCs can promote the differentiation of Msi1‑positive cells into intestinal epithelial‑like cells remains to be fully elucidated. In the present study, to inhibit PI3K signaling, mESCs were treated with LY294002.

Chemotherapeutic drugs can enhance an immune response of the host against the tumor in addition to killing cancer cells by direct cytotoxicity. Therefore, the combination of chemotherapy and immunotherapy is a promising approach for eliminating tumors, particularly in advanced stages. A strategic medication is to use a bispecific antibody format that is capable of recruiting polyclonal T cells around antibody-target-expressing tumor cells.
