In insects, vision is crucial in finding host plants, but its role in nocturnal insects is largely unknown. Vision involves responses to specific spectra of photon wavelengths and opsins plays an important role in this process. Long-wavelength sensitive opsin (LW opsin) and blue-sensitive opsin (BL opsin) are main visual opsin proteins and play important in behavior regulation.

Background: Aquaporin (AQP) proteins comprise a group of membrane intrinsic proteins (MIPs) that are responsible for transporting water and other small molecules, which is crucial for plant survival under stress conditions including salt stress. Despite the vital role of AQPs, little is known about them in cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.).

Background: Circular RNAs (circRNAs) are 3'-5' head-to-tail covalently closed non-coding RNA that have been proved to play essential roles in many cellular and developmental processes. However, no information relate to cucumber circRNAs is available currently, especially under salt stress condition.

Results: In this study, we sequenced circRNAs in cucumber and a total of 2787 were identified, with 1934 in root and 44 in leaf being differentially regulated under salt stress.

Article Synopsis
  • Stripe rust, caused by the fungus Puccinia striiformis f. sp. tritici, is a severe disease affecting wheat, and breeding resistant cultivars is the best way to manage it.
  • The wheat mutant R39 shows adult-plant resistance due to a recessive gene named YrR39, which was precisely mapped to a 17.39 Mb region on chromosome 4B using BSA and SLAF-seq techniques.
  • Among 126 annotated genes in this region, the gene Traes_4BS_C868349E1 (linked to disease response) was found to be up-regulated after inoculation, indicating its potential role in resistance to stripe rust.
