Real-time dynamics of angular momentum transfer from spin to acoustic chiral phonon in oxide heterostructures.

Chiral phonons have recently been explored as a novel degree of freedom in quantum materials. The angular momentum carried by these quasiparticles is generated by the breaking of chiral degeneracy of phonons, owing to the chiral lattice structure or the rotational motion of ions of the material. In ferromagnets, a mechanism for generating non-equilibrium chiral phonons has been suggested, but their temporal evolution, which obeys Bose-Einstein statistics, remains unclear.

Metal-free Ketjenblack incorporated nitrogen-doped carbon sheets derived from gelatin as oxygen reduction catalysts.

Electrocatalysts facilitating oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) are vital components in advanced fuel cells and metal-air batteries. Here we report Ketjenblack incorporated nitrogen-doped carbon sheets derived from gelatin and apply these easily scalable materials as metal-free electrocatalysts for ORR. These carbon nanosheets demonstrate highly comparable catalytic activity for ORR as well as better durability than commercial Vulcan carbon supported Pt catalysts in alkaline media.

Occurrence of toxigenic Staphylococcus aureus in ready-to-eat food in Korea.

Toxigenic Staphylococcus aureus contamination in ready-to-eat (RTE) food is a leading cause of foodborne illness in Korea. To monitor food contamination by S. aureus, a total of 3332 RTE food samples were selected from nationwide wholesale marts between 2003 and 2004 and examined.

Change of proliferation rate of corneal epithelium in the rabbit with orthokeratology lens.

Objective: To investigate the cell proliferation rate of normal corneal epithelium with extended orthokeratology lens (OKL) wear in comparison with extended rigid gas-permeable (RGP) lens wear.

Methods: Twenty-four rabbits were fitted unilaterally with either an OKL or an RGP lens, and the other eye was used as a control. They were injected with 5-bromo-2-deoxyuridine (BrdU) 24 h prior to being sacrificed.

Effects of viscoelastic material on the corneal endothelial cells in trabeculectomy with adjunctive mitomycin-C.

We evaluated the change of corneal endothelium after trabeculectomy with mitomycin-C soaking (0.2 mg/ml, 2.4 +/- 1.
